You hear the term pre shading a lot in the model building community...the question is “what in the world is it?”
Well it’s pretty simple, it’s the art of “pre” shading your panels so that when you apply your color coat it has transitions.
It is a very simple process that anyone with an airbrush can achieve.

Big thanks. Last December I almost lost my whole hand, had a heavy intervention where all my tendons were broken and the most probable thing was to amputee. Now I am writing using all of my fingers and I'm BACK at modeling and building my kits and shit. Stronger than ever (I guess...). Thank you for this.

Wow man, first off….HELL YEAH BEING BACK, especially after being in such a traumatic situation! Keep working those fingers and building…both strength and models! Thank you my friend for this comment, I actually needed this with the stuff I have had going on. Keep it up man, seriously never give up! So I know I say this a lot in my videos and I’m not even sure if it really means anything at all to you lol but you are truly the definition of a Notsoaveragebuilder!

How I do mine is I do a black primer then do a good light layer or two. Then on the flat or curved parts i go heavier. Nice tips though and nice airbrush control 👍

Great vid! Quick question, what is the size of your nozzle and the PSI that you spray at when you're doing the fine shading vs when you are doing the wider area mist coats? It's probably something I'm going to have to play around with myself because our environments (humidity, temp) are different, but I'm just curious what works for you. Thanks!
@NotSoAverageBuilder
@NotSoAverageBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! I am currently using a .35 nozzle and typically I stay around 20psi, I do fluctuate here and there but typically I stay around the 20 psi area. That works for my fine shading along with my color coat layers. Sometimes if I get my paint super thin I will drop the psi down to around 5-10 psi to prevent spider webbing because I’m doing more detailed close up work like spot highlights etc, but if I’m doing a solid color coat and I have it that thin I just keep it at 20 and barely rock the trigger back on the AB. I have used this rule of thumb when airbrushing. If I do a test spray on a paper towel and it immediately soaks in I drop the PSI, but if it “paints” the paper towel I leave it on the 20psi setting. Doing this was the easiest way to learn consistencies when thinning paints down.

Here's a question. Could you put down a gloss coat, and then use a real touch marker along the edges, and sort of smear it to achieve a similar shading effect?
@NotSoAverageBuilder
@NotSoAverageBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I would say you that the real touch marker would dry so fast that it would take you ages to achieve it. You would have better luck using pastels and creating the shade that way. Plus once you clear over that it will darken the color and make the fade more apparent.

Great video & thanks..... One question... I'm a noob & I've got basic 'cheap & cheerful' airbrush etc. Is a 0.2 needle & nozzle the right combo for the pre-shading lines, a simple learners question. Thanks in advance.
@NotSoAverageBuilder
@NotSoAverageBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend! Honestly, there is no wrong answer to that. Yes a smaller needle will give you a much finer point but any size needle can be used to create nice fine lines. It just takes more practice and patience. So I encourage you to practice with your cheap and cheerful airbrush to create really fine lines and once you can nail that it’s time to upgrade to a better brush :)

@@NotSoAverageBuilder Many, many thanks indeed for your prompt reply. As a noob, I'm not too bad with general 'area' coverage and I managed to do free-hand mottling on a me 163 Komet. But this business of pre-shading is a new thing I want to try out. I've done it on two models, albeit a bit hit & miss but, as you do explain, it's a matter of patience & practice. Your reply has helped me as I know I'm not making a direct mistake as to the choice of needle/nozzle combo. Good luck Garry.

You say a green hue, I say that Bernie jacked the Alex and tried to use his Zaku touch up paint, but ran out.

Ha ha I didn’t think about that! That’s a good story point! I might have to pick up another Alex and do a Zaku style paint job on it :)
