How to Prepare an iOS Device for Sale, Giveaway, or Trade-in
Instructions:
1) Backup all important data using either iCloud (via wifi) or iTunes on a Mac/PC (via cable).
2) Turn off Find My iPhone/iPad/iPod
3) Erase all content and settings, or perform an iTunes restore.

Thank you, This really helps but the iPad is so ass I can't Even download netflix or even subway surfers. I tried to complete my apple id at the app store im almost done so I click Agree the terms and Conditions then click next. Shows its loading then shows the option to click next. Again It will keep happening.

Will this process remove the iCloud from the ipad and the buyer would be able to set up this ipad as a new ipad with a new apple id and iCloud?

Thank you for this essential info-useful because I have old iPads back to the 2010 original. I also have extensively used an old iPad V3 (unused for some years now due to a fault with the temperature regulatory chip systems). It cannot be powered on, displaying a temperature boot error with nowhere to go from there. It was always backed up to iCloud. Do I need to take it to a third party and physically stand there to observe the destruction of the motherboard and memory modules? Is that a secure option, free of possible data theft? All assistance you can provide is generous indeed and sincerely appreciated as I want to get rid of unnecessary/ “dead” devices :-)

Hi Keyyyyzzzz, It really depends on the sensitivity of the data on the device that is currently inoperable. I don't know what OS is on your iPad, but you may be able to set the iPad to erase automatically if ever powered on and connected to the internet: support.apple.com/guide/icloud/erase-a-device-mmfc0ef36f/icloud . With that said, I highly doubt someone would go to the lengths required to recover your data, especially since the device is inoperable and they would have no reason to believe anything of value was stored on the device to begin with. Assuming there was a passcode setup on the iPad, I'm pretty sure the data is encrypted and would be very difficult, if not nearly impossible to access unless the code is known. At the end of the day, it is a personal decision, one I can't make for you. However, if the device did have a passcode set, I feel the simplest, and likely most pragmatic solution, would be to disable Find My for the iPad using iCloud.com and submit the device to Apple for recycling. Someone told me that I only do this: setting>General>reset>erase all content and settings, and all down. Why this is wrong? That is, why we must stop find my iPad first? Thanks a lot for you response and help.

Find My is essentially a tracking/anti-theft feature. If you erase a device without turning off the feature, the device may be activation locked, preventing the next owner from setting up the device. Also, I believe Apple requires you to turn off Find My before recycling the device through them as an informal way of confirming that the device is not being recycled against the will of its owner. WRONG WAY TO RESET. Sign out of your iCloud account in settings before resetting. You can not ship this iPad without signing out because the next user will not be able to set up the iPad.

Though I appreciate your engagement, unless there has been a change to the way activation lock works since the making of this video, your assertion that my methods are wrong is patently false. IIRC, signing out of iCloud on the device prior to erasing and resetting is another good alternative, however.

It would be advisable to at least turn off Find My, if not sign out of iCloud entirely, prior to erasing all content and settings, however, it’s not entirely necessary. You can simply turn off Find My and remove the device from your iCloud account from iCloud.com after erasing the device.
