Cellulose Glue Recipe:
Sprinkle 20 gms into 600ml of water.
Stir briskly to avoid lumps.
Leave for 24 hours to dissolve completely.
Thin if necessary.
Dampen paper to be used, helps keep paste workable for longer.
Apply to the paper when cool. Brush from the centre to the edges allow to dry and then crumple and fold.
This paste is made from cellulose, a substance occurring naturally in plant matter. It comes in powder form and easily mixes with water. Unlike wallpaper paste, it does not contain anti-fungicide and is completely non-toxic.
Can be used to thicken any water-based paints and non-reactive dyes. It can also be used as an adhesive; as a base for marbling; for papier-mache; as a binder and size in paper-making and to convert acrylics into screen-print colour.
I have not used tapioca starch but I will try it.
Tapioca starch recipe:
1 tsp tapioca starch and 100 ml cold water.
Stir and then heat in microwave for 20 seconds
Stir again and heat for 20 seconds again.
Stir until the paste turns white
Allow cooling.
Apply to the paper when cool. Brush from the centre to the edges allow to dry and then crumple and fold.
Konnyaku starch. This is more expensive.
The starch is traditionally used in the preparation of mulberry papers for momigami.
This is not a sticky adhesive starch. This helps in the preparation of papers for use as fabrics as they will not become sticky when they are moistened. (These fabric-like materials can be wiped down with a dampened cloth but not washed.)
Konnyaku starch is made from konnyaku flour, a product derived from the starchy root of Amorphophallus konjac.
Methyl Cellulose
This is the glue used by bookbinders and those working with materials requiring archival qualities
Methyl Cellulose Recipe:
1 cup of distilled water heated to 70 degrees centigrade
1/8th cup of methylcellulose powder
Add the powder to the warm distilled water slowly using a whisk to stir out all the lumps.
This can take a while
Cover the container with a lid and shake the closed container.
Leave overnight for the mix to gel
Add more cool distilled water to dilute as necessary

Hi again Kacie, I looked up Methyl Cellulose glue supplied in America and it can be dissolved in cold water and is a lot cheaper than in Britain. Enjoy your creativity and good luck X

Hi Louise, I am so glad that you made this video; I reached out before to find out where you got your cellulose from. It turns out I could not get what you are using in the United States so I ordered Methyl Cellulose. I am glad that you provided a recipe so that I can make this adhesive. My art tribe is excited to use this method and to make the papers. I am soooo excited to use the papers in my collage work! Thank you again!!!

Methyl cellulose is one of the most archival pastes to use. It is used by paper and book conservationists. Some bookbinders mix it with PVA glue. Methyl cellulose is so pure that is is actually edible; it is used as a thickener for many food products. I wouldn't use any cellulose pastes with additives. It can be mixed to be thin and runny or thick and stiff. Dries clear. I love it. It seems to bond with the paper but it is also reversible. The only paper it doesn't work well on is clay-coated papers.

Thank you for this. I have been wondering about the cellulose glue. It is not easily available in New Zealand. I will watch the other video about the glue attributes. Would bugs be a problem in the starch flour glues? I thought that was an issue.
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 2 жыл бұрын
You are so welcome. It is strange how difficult it is to find out about the attributes of the glues, eg. why is methy cellulose glue so much more expensive and if it remains so vulnerable to humidity why is it thought of as archival above the cheaper plain cellulose glue. I will do more research and another video on glues. X

Is the methyl cellulose glue archival? I got confused about that part, but that is the kind of glue I got, the only cellulose that I could find.It sounded like you said cellulose isn't archival, but methyl cellulose is.

Methyl cellulose is archival. Wallpaper paste is also a cellulose glue, but it has additives that may make it no longer archival. 😀😀If you are in Britain, I can send a supplier. But I suspect that you are in America, Canada or perhaps Australia 😀

Hi, I have used the papers yarns but have never made any. They are stiff and when they are dampened with glues they can revert to paper very quickly. They are fantastic for some things you just have to use them knowing their attributes.

Once mixed with water, how long will it keep? (I want to try your method for making 'holey' paper.)
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 2 ай бұрын
Hi Fran, It keeps quite a long time, but it is an organic product and will go off. I haven't tried freezing the dissolved glue, but that might work. 😀

Hi, once it hardens, is it water resistant?
@LouiseJannetta
@LouiseJannetta 3 ай бұрын
No. I use this because because it remains resolvable. It can be used with watercolour and acrylic and the natural bibres of the mediums used will absorb pigment depending on their textures and absorbancy, This can produce some beautiful reults.😀

Once it's mixed how long does it last?

Hi, thanks for your interest. This is an organic product and will go off. I have found that it lasts a good while, a couple of weeks, but appears to go thinner as it ages. I think it may be possible to freeze it and will give that a trial. 😀
