How to prevent a sliding barn door from opening or closing on its own

For your average DIYer, installing a barn door can be a learning experience - to put it mildly. But what about after you've installed the door? Even professionals have problems with the doors naturally wanting to open or close themselves. All it takes is the tiniest incline in your rail system for it to happen. But the solution is surprisingly cheap and simple - and it won't ruin the look of your beautiful door! If your barn door keeps opening or closing on it's own, you can use a felt pad to hold the door in place. It's just that easy.

I didn't have a small felt pad on hand but I did have some moleskin! I just cut it to size and that worked perfectly! Thank you!!!

This worked like a charm! The felt pads I had were too thick. I substituted with a thinner cork cork pad that I made black with a sharpie.

This was the perfect solution. After the felt pad was installed I shaved it down so it was barely noticeable but did the trick.

So glad I found this video. Thank you! Didn’t have a felt pad but put a small strip of black gorilla tape and booyah. We’ll see how long that lasts. But for now, time to move to the next project.

Thanks for this! We added a handle to our door and it messed up the weight equilibrium. We cut off a thin piece of 3M command strip and stuck it on top of the track. Probably going to color it black so it blends in more!

I believe this is the same doir I purchased at Lowe's. Thanks for the tip. I live in a small cabin. My front and back door is a barn door so I really wanted to continue the theme in my bathroom. And get ride on the plastic accordion door that currently there. My kids will hang it for me for Christmas.

Thank you so much! I was able to fix my barn door in less than 10 minutes! Just had to find my bag of felt I had in the house and that took about 5 minutes out of the 10!! Works perfectly!

What the..? I can't believe how easily you solved our problem! The barn door was perfectly level, but it's a 1923 building, so the door moved a little each way. I didn't have felt pads, so I used one side of those 3M Velcro Adhesive Strips for hanging pictures. Thank you, thank you!

Just installed my barn door. Yes, once installed the door was rolling shut about 4 inches. I watched this video which was so helpful. I didn't want to use a little felt round because I know that these little pieces will eventually come off and came up with the idea of wrapping a narrow piece of black double-sided hook-and-loop around the rail near the stop. I pulled the hook and loop tight around the rail and cut off the excess. Worked like a charm and this will never come off. It is about the same thickness as the little round felt piece.

Worked. So easy and I sharpied the edge of a tan felt pad. I cut it in about 1/3 because rail was thinner than pad.
