How to Prevent Breakage While Powershifting a Manual Transmission

The secret to avoiding catastrophic failure with a manual transmission is the "pre-load" and a good shift knob. In this video I do my best to show you how I was able to have a whole lot of fun banging gears with wore out stuff that should've exploded on the first hit. But it lasted for years.

It’s definitely a lost art. Most people don’t upgrade their shifters anymore to a Hurst and won’t understand the reason behind the adjustable stops. It was to prevent, reduce and eliminate the wear on the shifter forks. You can tell the cars that have the old pops out of gear problem as a sign of the damage. Great video brother, stay blessed.

I love my Top Loader. I may be biased, but I feel it shifts better than any T-5 (unless it is freezing out, then it is a little stiff until it warms up). When teaching family how to drive a stick, I suggest for them to finger shift it like you described above also using the fingers for the 2 to 3 shift. that way if (when) they screw up there is less damage because their fingers just slip off which is better than if they shift with a death grip.

That is a great explanation and good descriptive words to try to explain to this to someone who has never done this before! I guess I have a bit of road racer in me where I put my toes on the brake pedal and heel on the gas pedal when I work the brake and the gas together. My V-Gate shifted Muncie has a T-handle but, my Competition Plus shifted Muncie will have a ball. My buddy Dennis at Caveman Garage has a great video where he is practicing his power shifting in his '55 Chevy gasser and the pistol grip handle comes off in his hand on his 3rd to 4th shift...hilarious! kzfaq.infomYaqo6J7XIs?si=_MEBWNIfnVRhdZV_

lolololol Part two of this I elaborate on those pistol grips a bit more..... and he nailed it solid in that short... lolololol. This one was kind of an experimental video, and the camera switched to Widescreen for some reason. Thanks a mill Hubie!

All wrong, you want to reverse for at least 3 feet. Then floor it an sidestep the clutch. I recommend a big block with a T4 or T5 and the smallest axle you can find with an open diff. Spin that one tire until the spider gears lock up. 🥸

@@BareRoseGarage I may have witnessed something like this. Pretty sure I said, you can do what you want. I'm not fixing it.

Blew out my Spiders at an Auto -X at Scott AFB in IL. After a bunch of grinding & crunching I got it to move, went from 1st to 4th & never let off, having to drive on shoulder at times brake torquing it to keep a load on it until S. St Louis. Hit a traffic light & had to grind it all over again. Got to the top of my block when it locked up. Had to dump the clutch in reverse to blow it apart to coast the rest of the way home. Hey, it did not leave me stranded.
