I actually like the barn swallows around my house. They eat all kind of flying bugs and wasp, BUT after 3 nest on my front porch I needed to know how to JUST keep them off my porch. Thanks for the tip.

There is a wasp nest right next to where these birds are building a nest. I doubt I'll be able to find any of the netting, but I'll look for some.

Wow! The EUCALYPTUS essential oil did it and fast. I use Mary Tylor Naturals mix with a little water and sprayed the porch area. They came back but after sensing the oil have not tried to build any longer. And it makes the porch smell mossy. Yum!! The perfect EASY solution. Done in seconds! Thanks to the commenter for the suggestion…..

I used to be a tree surgeon and was asked by a guy to cut down an oak on his driveway that had the audacity to drop leaves on his car . I pointed out to him that i know people that would be glad of owning a driveway big enough to have such a beutiful tree on it and they would remove the car not the tree as the tree was there first .

The only thing I have found effective is to constantly spray vinegar where they are trying to nest. When it wears off, they are back. I don't mind the birds nesting, but the poop patterns are annoying. Vinegar cleans that, too.

Nope. I've been vegan for 13 years because of animals but birds living on your porch can create health problems and when they leave after raising their young bird mites can often infest the nearby room. It's OK to deter an animal from living on your house because they do the same.

Thanks for this! I'm currently fighting a battle with some Swallows trying to build almost right over my front door, which has virtually the exact same stone surrounding it. To date, I've just been going out several times a day, and just scraping off the mud they've been leaving, but this is a far better solution. Thanks again.

Spraying or daubing petrol or turps where they try to build nests works every season. They don't like the smell so they go to the neighbours.

Hi John, please use caution with swallow exclusion. They are federally protected most of the year and disturbing nests between February and October can lead to huge fines. Owls and flash tape are extremely ineffective due to the birds natural instinct to return to the place they were born to produce offspring. They will aggressively persue access and are cleverly manipulative. Netting is a great option, there is also Bird Slide that can be painted to color match and actually adds to the aesthetics of the home. There are other viable options for the homeowners when it comes to total exclusion of any bird species.

@@gabumonboys Do when they leave the country. They will come back next year and make their home again. I love Swallows and yes they are protected and I am glad. They are so beautiful beings and need our protection. When fall arrives you can clean because they fly back to Argentina, Peru, Paraguay etc and won't come back until the middle of May.

They are Barn Swallows, and It's illegal to harm them in ALL states because they are federally protected migratory birds. ---- I got rid of them in my carport by covering any & all nesting surfaces with aluminum foil and hanging some old CD's on monofilament fishing line if front of any nesting areas. They do not like reflective surfaces nor the movement of the CD's in the breeze. It scares them away. -- It worked for me. :)

Wow! Lots of ugly comments. Some people enjoy swallows, BUT don’t want the loads of poo and mud under their porch. There’s nothing wrong with trying to keep them away, because after all, they’re not being harmed. I once had them build a giant mud nest over a light fixture, blocking light...porch light was useless!! I don’t mind them anywhere else, just NOT under my porch. I tried everything, even vinegar. Nothing worked EXCEPT for eucalyptus oil diluted in water and sprayed. They don’t like the strong smell, so they don’t come around. It has also gotten rid of the daddy long legs spiders that use to nest there, too!!

A FAR better solution is to understand the relationship of swallows near human habits historically and embrace it. Put up nesting ledges in places you can live with them building in (under eaves) to encourage them to go there instead. If you and everyone "tuning in" could look into the WHY and the benefits to both human and bird in this hundreds of years old occurrence, all would be the better. The world has forgotten why barn swallows are called barn swallows. Or you could make KZfaq videos in ignorance and complain about poop. Please consider the former.

Wrong. Swallows build nests near human habitat FOR their protection. "BARN" Swallows are not named Barn Swallows arbitrarily. It's a mutually beneficial relationship that everyone seems to have forgotten.

therealchickentender I stopped reading after the first word. The swallows that were outside my door used to swoop down toward me in a defensive manner. Nice try bro. A bird flying within 5 feet of my face every time I go outside isn't mutually beneficial.
