Thanks for making this video. I clicked on it accident but found it valuable for determining value of time and work in general. The formula makes sense and is fair.

This is a great formula for figuring out pricing, especially if you are new to selling your pieces. Many of us tend to under value out work.

I have been invited to come up with something in glass which has focus on certain national parks. Its an interesting opportunity. I want it to be fun, a good experience but don't know if I can do it. Gift store prices/quality are usually cheap, so I stay away from them. I was told that the focus was to be on local artists and a higher caliber/quality USA than the cheap out of country normal. So have been brain storming. Will see what I can come up with. Your video has been very helpful! Thank you for your valuable ideas and encouragement! We are lucky to have you! :-)

Very interesting! I’m not selling yet, and I won’t be adding CAF tax for a bit since I’m a newly, but this really helps me think about my time spent, overhead and ways to lower costs like buying larger sheets of glass. Thank You Tanya and AAE Glass.

I REALLY appreciate this video! I make stained glass and i always struggle with this....mostly because of where I live and what people will actually pay locally. It's tough because stained glass is so involved on the time part. Another thing I struggle with is pricing the supplies. I get the glass part and I buy in large quantities, but it's the smaller supplies like foil (how much footage per piece????), flux, wax, solder, etc. Also, I sale on commission to a local botanical gardens, they don't buy wholesale and take 30%. So I put 30% on top of my price and mostly what happens is my art gets exposure but ultimately decorates their gift shop! plus, they have a clause that states stolen or broken items, they are not responsible for. Been there a year, so far 2 broken pieces!

Wish more people thought about pricing . The phase I hate " I use scrap so sell cheaper" - its not scrap , its off cuts , you paid for the glass .

I know this is a few years after this video but I have questions. What if I use scrap glass to make something? Either the whole piece of parts of a piece? What about having to fire something more than once. How is that calculated? How is kiln time in general calculated? What about frit? I can't see where an hourly rate can be put on that or all pieces would be cost-prohibitive. Thanks!

UK- any craft - a major problem is the people who go to events for the "fun" or "experience" of doing the event - they come once / their prices can be so low . Same with FB groups , the sellers even say -"just want to recover my glass costs " which is their choice but for those that earn income by selling its disheartening. ( UK groups ) . How do you sell along side this ?
@aaeglass
@aaeglass 3 жыл бұрын
When Tanya sold finished pieces retail and wholesale, we would price with this formula and tailor our sales pitch to wherever the next show is. We would rarely lower our prices, instead we would make sure to bring a line of glass art that is less costly for the buyer. So they can spend up if they want to, but they can also find something at an affordable price. Each way, I am making the margin I need to. Thanks for watching! www.aaeglass.com/

I believe that what ever price you come up with, you should double it because you are thinking too "production" and forgetting that this is handmade art.
@aaeglass
@aaeglass 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. It’s not a matter of doubling your price, it is matter of pricing your time as it is worth as indicated in the video. If your time is worth 25/hr, for example, and a piece takes you 3 hours to make, you are quadrupling your price for your handmade product. This supersedes double. Thus, the formula. It’s all about your “time” to make anything. In addition, adding the “CAF” charge to your products cover that issue as well. Thanks for insight and comment. Work the formula...it will work. It’s all about how you price yourself as a working artist, not production. If you do not charge enough for your time to begin with, the formula will not work.
