I figured out the issue you were having with 2 separate tracks both with DMXIS, I have it working in my Logic Pro X DAW. Click ‘Track -- other-- New track with same instrument. It will give you the 2 separate tracks From there you can navigate normally & use the even list to edit the channel to 15 or 16.

Hey Scott! Thanks for this video. I have been able to build a light show from scratch, just by using your tutorial, so great work! I have a question. With DMXis running, when you hit pause on the project, the lights continue running the current sequence. Is there a way of forcing DMXis to either turn off the lights when the music is paused, or do something of my choosing, like setting all lights to white? Say something goes wrong at a show and you need to start the song from the beginning, etc. It'd be good to be able to pause the track and have the lights stop or turn white. So we can see what we're doing on stage.

Hi Scott. Have you delved into cross-fading lighting scenes (presets)? I can't seem to find any info on how to do this.
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 3 жыл бұрын
It’s very easy in DMXIS. You have the “fade to next” knob right next to the preset menu. Set that to how many seconds you want it to take to go to the next preset. It only works per preset which is nice. So you can say preset 1 you want to be set to “fade to next” for 2 seconds and it will take 2 seconds to fade to the the next preset no matter what it is.

Thank you so much for this Scott !! This is the best tutorial I have found anywhere and I will be implementing it into my live setup. I have a quick question for you: How stable is it to run logic in a live setup like this? It makes perfect sense but there is always the possibility of logic crashing in the middle of the performance. Is it possible to use MainStage 3 instead or will it not be able to control all these external devices as well as Logic does ? I personally prefer the idea of using Logic X but I have been warned by other musicians not to use logic live because it is less stable than MainStage. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you :-)
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 5 жыл бұрын
I never had a problem with using Logic live. I've watched videos of touring musicians do rig-rundowns and they use ProTools and Cubase and Logic live. Like I said, I never had a problem with it. But MainStage should work too depending on what you needed to use it for. I dabbled in MainStage for a little bit and switched over to Logic. I honestly cannot remember what made me switch over. But either one would work fine for you. MainStage is meant for live use, so it might work better. It really depends on you being comfortable with your DAW. I use Ableton now, and I definitely know more about Logic than Ableton, so if something goes wrong it's going to take me longer to figure out where to fix the problem in Ableton than it will with Logic.

The issue with Mainstage is that you can't run midi tracks with it, which is very annoying - I think it'd be maybe the best live-show software if it did, especially considering the price, but there we go. It's why I'm switching to using Logic (with the help of these great videos from Scott).
@rickpmd86

@@sentientfootwear Agree. Seems to me that adding a simple MIDI plug-in to run MIDI in Mainstage would solve a lot of issues with MainStage. MainStage is great for audio, software instruments and sending MIDI data OUT, but you can program a MIDI track inside MainStage, at least I haven't found a way to do it.

@@xXMJHarvey89Xx I've actually never used (or heard of) a USB DI Box, so I had to look it up. Pretty cool! I'm assuming that would work, and yes, you could just send the headphones from the MacBook to you. My advice is always be able to turn up or down the click volume easily. Every show will be different, and you have to be able to turn up or down. You can get a headphone mixer for $30. The Behringer P2 runs off of AAA batteries, so I usually recommend that one for a single signal headphone amplifier

Hello, my band is wanting to start using lights in our shows. We're playing with the idea of making LED light towers. My question is, would it be possible to use those wireless DMX setups with homemade DIY lights? If so, how would one go about doing that? Thank you very much! Awesome and informative video!
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 5 жыл бұрын
I definitely don't know about how to build lights and stuff like that. It's not my strong suite at all (but I would love to learn or hire someone). You would just have to find a way to get a DMX signal into the lights to control them. However, companies make a DMX controlled power strip (often with a dimmer too) so you can turn on and off lights that way. I programmed a friend's light show for their CD release with one. I believe it was the "Chauvet DJ DMX-4 4-Ch DMX Dimmer/Switch Pack"

I haven't tried the wireless set up yet. But after our first show fiddling with all the cables I'm highly considering just switching to wireless. I've built some light boxes for my band with clamp lights from Home Depot and a little Woodworkers magic. You can buy a 4 or 8Ch Dimmer box that has DMX controlled capabilities. So I'm more than confident it should work Only issue you might come across for what you want is the LED's. Most Dimmer boxes I've seen aren't compatibles with LED's so you're stuck with the typical incandescent or fluorescent light bulb. You can always buy some ADJ or Chauvet LED PARS which most come with a wide range of colors (RGBAWUV) and most of them are already dmx compatible and some already have the wireless built in....but you're gonna have to dish out a bit more money. So it's really dependent on how much you're willing to budget for and what you want to accomplish. Check out my Instagram @harvey_hustle I have a bunch of pictures and videos of the light setup I built. and it has all been programmed through Midi to sync perfectly with our Live Shows!

I use a Yamaha MOXf which runs from MIDI Events and synth Voices to produce backing tracks. Is there a way to simply add MIDI Events to one designated track that is communicating with another program or directly to the lights via DMX. I know almost nothing about the technology but I know that I have my whole show running off MIDI anyway, so why not be able to trigger lighting cues that "play along" with everything?

Scott, you might know the answer to this - I use Slimpar 56 lights like you do. In DMXIS, whenever I open the program the dimmers are set to 0, even if I automate it in ableton to be at max value and save it, whenever I open Ableton and/or DMXIS standalone, the faders are back at 0. Before each show I gotta go in and drag the faders up or select my "dimmers on" preset. Always drives me insane bc I always think my lights aren't working but then I remember that dumb ass step I gotta do. It's so dumb that I feel like it has to be something I'm missing. I know this is a specific question but do you know if there's any way to save the fader position to where they are when I close the program/ableton? Hope you're well man.

I honestly don’t know if it does. I always have a “soundcheck” scene where every single light I have turns blue. If a light has any other colors or isn’t working I know it isn’t configured properly. But it does usually start at 0 for me as well. That’s just how I check to see if they are working

Hey Scott, great tutorial! Quick question: running all VSTs at once and automating the mute button seems very DSP consumming. Is there a more efficient way of automating changes of MIDI patches? This would also go for automating changes in full channel strips (for processing audio tracks without using a Helix or a TC Helicon) Thanks!
@ScottUhlMusic
@ScottUhlMusic 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I no longer run all VST's at once and hit mute. It was too DSP consuming and I'm amazed that it only crashed once when I did too many hi quality videos with it. I'm really fortunate, but I also have switched over to Ableton now and I use all external sounds with my Roland FA06 for keys. I would be curious if you could automate changes on the full strips in Logic. You can in Ableton (Ableton is definitely THE best program for live), but I do not know if you can in Logic.
