Thank you. VERY HELPFUL! You are very clear and one can learn it well, the way you teach it. Hoping to go to Omsterdom soon. I will start saying Howda for the cheese right away, and practice the other words when I can. I will also look for your other videos. I love learning languages.

I started my career working for a Dutch Anglo corporation and I was lucky to be able to have lots of time in Netherlands and loved the easy to use trains to take me to Gouda; yes HOWWDAH. North to das Scheveningen for which I'd never use the whimp version, Den Hague. That town name was used to ferret out if you were truly Dutch or a German (Nazi). That was the easy part of my times there: try properly saying the Welsh town of Llangollen!

Great video... When we took the train from Utrecht one day to travel to some other cities.. (LOVE their train system!!).... when we stopped at Gouda and the train conductor said the name of our location, I was 😲"whaaAAAAaaaaat"?? ....Fortunately, a second later we pulled up to the station sign which says "GOUDA" on it. We were there for a few minutes, so I asked one of the guys working on the train if he could pronounce it again.. He got a kick out of it, told me how to say it again, then told me not to worry about it... that almost all Americans like me never get it right.. LOL! 😆

Hahah, I can imagine the surprise of hearing the real pronounciation after hearing the English pronounciation all your life. But yeah, we understand that not everyone can pronounce it the Dutch way (obviously- it's a different language haha). Also, I'm very glad to hear that you travelled to different cities in The Netherlands: most people tend to only visit Amsterdam and miss out on so much!

My wife is Danish and I am English and also fluent in Danish. I can recognise quite a few Dutch words as they are the same or similar to Danish. I think I could learn Dutch quite easily...lol. Also, we have a nice Dutch couple as next door neighbours and I try and impress them by throwing in a couple of Dutch words here and there. Mooi video, dank je vel

Thank you so much :) They say that we got some pretty similar languages yes, but also English and Dutch are pretty related too. So if you combine English and Danish, then I think you could pick it up really quick yes. And keep impressing the Dutchies, we're always very surprised (in a good way) as soon as someone not from here speaks a bit of our language :)

@@TheDutchcountryside ..Thanks for your reply Manon. Yes, the Dutch are probably the closest culturally and linguistically to the English than any others. I was always amazed by how many people spoke English in The Netherlands. I have been enjoying your videos. Thank you.

Thank you! I will always remember the man at the ticket office in Schipol airport trying to teach me Nijmegen 😂 at least Scottish, we can do the throat bit 🤣 we were then advised by the conductor on the train that we had got the wrong train, we were on the 2mins to the hour, ours was on the hour! In our country if the train is there it’s a miracle! At least we still got to Nijmegen! Is it the NS travel app that’s best? I lost my apps from last trip over, but it was a lifesaver, also my rail card…will need to get a new one next time. Love your country though, will try learning the names, will make train rides less scary as some of these place names sound nothings like my brain thinks they should sound! 🤣

So, listening to you pronounce things like the g in gouda with a very different sound to my English pronunciation, I'm thinking back the Roman (Latin?) alphabet and thinking did each linguistic tree just use the alphabet to their own established sounds? How would Gouda sound in Latin? How would a Spaniard today pronounce it, etc....?

It’s probably my own accent & dialect creeping in haha; my dialect is Westfries and we have a lot of dialects in the country, so people often pronounce things different. I tried to keep it as general as I could.
