I don't know if this is true but I heard several times that Lev Tolstoy agreed to the translation of Leo in English speaking and European country because it would get the meaning of "Lion" across to people. So it's not so much about Lev being hard to understand, but people in other countries not getting that it means lion.

Thank you for sharing. I must admit that I got some of these incorrectly as well on the first go around. I enjoy the work of Chekhov and plan to read work by Bulgakov, so it is nice to know how their names are truly pronounced. It is going to take me time and the ability to explain the truth to most people that the "k" is silent in Chekhov's name. -Josh

Thought I'd butt-in here rather late on as a note for other non-Russian speakers. I'm not Russian but I've been teaching myself the language and what I've found is the 'kh' in English transliterations is the standard method to attempt an approximation (albeit poor) to the Russian letter X, which is pronounced more like 'ha' but with a sort of roughness. I'm Scottish, so I can produce the sound quite easily since it's very similar to the sound we make pronouncing 'loch'. So whenever you see 'kh' in a transliterated Russian name or something, just remember to say it more like 'ha', but almost like you're yawning at the same time. Unfortunately, I can't roll an r to save myself. :(

Not many languages have the Russian "x" sound. So they approximate Chekhov either as Chehov or Chekov. Just like Russian approximates the English soft "h" sound either as "x" (хоррор) or "г" (гамбургер).

I'm just beginning "Fathers And Sons" by Ivan Turgenev, and "Taras Bulba" by Nikolai Gogol. Can you tell me, please, why I sometimes see "Bulba" with an apostrophy in it? Kinda like "Bul'ba", I think. Thanks. .

I came to this sight for Turgenev. If you are closed captioning it and speeding through this video they don't even come close to spelling it right. So he starts at (2:45).

I never got why Russians say the "-ov" part as "-off". It was always weird to me. Or is it just how it sounds like when they try to pronounce o and v together? Because in Slovenian we say the last part as -ou.

Normally we don't pronounce the 'v' sound at the end of a word as 'v'. it's just the way we speak:)
