You are absolutely right rachel; Indian people don't distinguish between the pronunciation of W and V. We always pronounce w as v....like :water -vater , what-vat. ..but I'm learning a lot from u...Thanks

Not only that, man. Also, some Indians, as well as their neighbors, Bangladeshis, start with "W" sound with "o" sound. For example: the word "word" is instead pronounced as "oh-wahrd". This is because they pronounce all English words based on their mother tongue's learning alphabets. Their transcripts in native tongues are exactly produced in the wrong way. It's not their fault, but they didn't actually become aware of it.

Hi Rachel! When I say the word "very" after the M sound, for example in the sentence "I'm very well", the V comes out more like a B, because it's a little hard for me not to press my lips together.

According to the Mary-merry-marry merger, the words "very" and "vary" are homophones. Both of them have a starting position of the vowel "air" which comes after "v" is sounded. And the word "bury" is the homophone of "berry" which both have the starting position of the vowel "bare" and then end with "y" (pronounced as "ih" as in "sit" vowel).

As you go from the start to the end, from /v/ to /i:/, does your tongue move at all? my default tongue position for /v/ is behind the lower teeth, and for /r/ is approaching the alveolar ridge, but not touching it. To say /v/ and then /r/ the tongue travels and in the end the word "very" sounds awkward. I've noticed recently that I can position my tongue tip into the near alveolar ridge position all the way through the word "very". Since the sound /v/ isn't influenced by the tongue position, it's a labial sound, I can just keep the tongue tip up there, where the /r/ sound is made. In this way my pronunciation of the word "very" sounds much better. Is it how you also do it? (not moving the tongue throughout the word)

Rachel, how come I hear the "e" in "very" (and other words like "share", "where", etc...) different than the "e" in "bed"? It seems to me that it's a more closed sound, similar to the first part of the "ay" diphthong..... What do you think?

why is this short E sound not the same as in the short E sound in the word BED. I've noticed Americans often pronounce short e before an R sound differently, as it was ɛː (scary). So, a word very should be written in API as ˈvɛːri/. and SCARY AMERICAN should be ˈskɛːri əˈmɛːrɪk(ə)n. Scary and very, has the same vowel sound. ok, this is too weird for me, it's so frustrating, I can't find any rules or any video explaining this. Can you help me out please?

yeah they have Mary-merry-marry merger, where most of the words like very and vary, they are homophones. As I assume you know that, this Mary-merry-marry merger has been found in General American dialects, West coast of US, Standard Canadian English dialects, Pacific Northwest English, except Quebec, and East coast of US, and in UK, they don't have the merger. Instead they use the "bat" vowel in all the "-ary" sounds but not the "air" vowel like the ones in the merger.
