I've had a year to think about how I can improve my strike rate for azalea propagation.
Here are 4 additional ideas for you to try.
Good luck.
It's the beginning of February and from now (late summer-early autumn) until the end of March is an ideal time to take azalea cuttings.
They should strike easily and readily with or without rooting hormone applied.
The advantage of rooting hormone would be to speed things up and in some cases help with the development of a more vigorous root system.

May I suggest that you can give the mother plant a really good watering several hours or overnight if you a propagating in the morning! This will assist with the cutting not having to seek water in the early stages, and prevent too much moisture loss through transpiration. I reckon that the sliver you remove should expose part of the inner wood (i.e. the white core) immediately before potting. I hope this helps!

Thanks Stewart, we'll see how I go. Have 3 well established Azalea bushes, like to get one or two more around the garden. Mine stopped blooming about 2 weeks ago, have to mention I'm in Australia so the seasons are opposite, it's early spring right now. Normally starts to get warm but we're having the third successive weather phenomenon called 'La Nina', affected by the 'southern oscillation of the Pacific and Indian oceans which brings cooler and a lot more wet weather. Will let you know how the azalea cuttings like it. Cheers.

Hi, liked your video much. You said to take the cuttings when the nights cool down. Ok well, I live in the northeast USA Pennsylvania to be exact. @StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Midge, Towards the end of Summer which is August for you guys. You need to take your cuttings from the current season of summer growth. I'm not sure how the weather works in you neck of the woods but you could try several lots, starting some earlier and some later. Hope this helps and good luck with it all. There's no exact right time so you might need to play around with it a bit.

Thank you for making this video. I’m not positive about this but it just seems like cutting the leaves would increase transpiration through the wound where as just plugging the leaves off and leaving two or three at the top would be better and less traumatic on the cutting then leaving a bunch that are cut in half… No?
@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 3 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting thought and I don't know either way for sure. I'm just the following conventional wisdom of others in this regard. Would be worth doing a comparison trial to see what results you'd get. Thank you for drawing my attention to it.

Wouldn't it be best to have watered the growing medium before you put the cuttings in? Wouldn't that keep the rooting powder to stay on better than to water it too heavily after planting? I would suggest a spray bottle to keep mix damp.
@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathy, either way would work. I like to keep my propagation media fairly wet so I use a watering can. I find if I lose any cuttings it is because they have dried out and on a hot day I will water three to four times to keep everything nice of wet. Good drainage in your medium is the key here. I have had the same concern about washing the rooting powder away but I’ve done a few trials and it hasn’t proved to be an issue.

I live in PA. I just bought three azaleas from the garden center and each of them had several 1 1/2 foot stems reaching up that I was going to prune. It is now The end of May and the blooms have dried up. Should I wait until August to cut those tall stems to use as cuttings? When they root The most I’ll have is a couple months before frost, so do I just leave them in their pots, inside the house, near a sunny window until next Spring when I can plant? Would a grow light be good or necessary?
@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jo-Ann, I'll be guessing here a bit because your climate is very different to mine so most of what I say will be a generalisation. Firstly though, it seems the 1 1/2 foot stems you refer to are called 'water-shoots.' Basically, just a way to describe a sudden extra burst of growth. You can go two ways here, 1st is to leave the growth and take your cuttings from semi-hardened current season growth around mid-August and then prune to a shape desired. 2nd is to prune to a height desired now and take your cuttings from the new growth that will arise from where you have pruned a little later towards the end of August. I think you have the right idea about leaving them in their pots over winter and then planting out in early spring. Azaleas don't need a lot of light so I'd think a grow light would be unnecessary but as bright a position possible would be enough. I hope this helps, Cheers Stewart.

I'm in Melbourne they are inner eastern suburbs and stilll getting quite a lot of flowers, but cuttings will be in North Warrandyte that has some very cold days I know they will grown in water and root and ive tried before, but don't think they'll like their toes cold over winter, how could I make them more happy. ty
@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 20 күн бұрын
They are going to need to be kept warm. Use a heat mat if you can and some kind of glasshouse, translucent storage containers in a sunny position will also help. Even the top of a hot water system. Otherwise, go back towards the end of summer and take some cuttings.

At what point would you transplant the cuttings? How and in what container (or ground?) would you transplant them?
@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Eleody, I usually wait until I see signs of new growth on the cuttings. Then I will carefully tease them apart and pot them up into 125mm pots using a good quality potting mix. I wouldn't go from cutting straight into the garden. I think this might be a bit much to ask from the cutting. Once it has had a few months in the pot then it'd be good to plant into the garden. Hope this helps, cheers.

@StewartDorman
@StewartDorman 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, basically, anything's possible but definitely a challenge. I'd take as many cuttings as you can, that way you can increase your chances of getting something to strike roots. I'd also find as bright (even full sun in winter) and warm a spot to place them as well. Also I get one of the ( www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/ezy-storage-solution-container-8l-solu8lt#specifications ) clear storage containers and place it upside down over the cuttings to create a mini hot house. Good luck.
