Hello guys! Today I am going over how to propagate your Umbrella Tree or Schefflera plants and care for your cuttings. It's a great activity to do when in quarantine and something all houseplant parents should try at some point, nothing better than a free plant right?! I've been slaving over this cutting ever since and hoping it'll all be worth it.

I’ve had spider mite infestations with these plants; nonetheless, they grow rapidly. If the plant is ever not thriving, place it in the shower and thoroughly rinse it periodically and you’ll see a marked difference. RAR Sacramento, CA 05/14/20

I received an umbrella plant as a gift from friends and family after my father passed away. I really wanted to propagate it so I could gift the generations of the plant to my mother and siblings. I've used your method before and it works really well! Thank you so much for helping me successfully keep my plant and keep it alive and thriving. Your descriptions of *why* every decision is made and which decisions are optional are very helpful. Thank you :)

Best level of quirk and plant passion. Subscribed. 😂 I've started doing a biology degree, aiming to specialise in plant sciences here at the University of Dundee, but I had no plants in my flat. I got 4 random plants that I was told were easy to take care of so I could start my plant family. One of them was the Schefflera Arboricola, but the leaves started to yellow and drop. I've gone from clueless to thinking about propagation now. 🤣😁 Thank you! ^_^

I rescued my umbrella plant from a skip. Someone had thrown it out, I guess because it wasn't looking to healthy. I repoted it, pruned it back and just stuck the cuttings back into the soil. I didn't really know what I was doing. Lol. Having said that, all the cutting grew despite a lack of attention on my part. That was years ago and I now have some really nice specimens. As long as you don't over water it, this plant is pretty indestructible. I keep mine in darker areas of my house where most other plants struggle to survive. I let the soil really dry out before watering. If you see the leaves suddenly drouping, water it immediately, but once again be careful not to let it sit in saturated soil.

I just cut sections and pull off a few bottom leaves and jam them straight into the soil outside (zone 9b). They never die. They always flourish. They are excellent privacy plants.

The thing with plastic bag worked for me, after 3 weeks it is rooting and i can see white bulgy spots on the stems that are inside of water. It was standing by the window where it gets around 2 h of direct sunlight and around 3 h of indirect brightness. Thank you ! (Also I live in a cold climate and my big schefflera is doing fine inside with occasional evening cold air coming from outside )

Wow I’ve never propagated like that before you’ve taught me something new. Much easier way I will say is what you just showed me because the way I did it several years ago I thought I was gonna pull my hair out I almost did and since then the tree has quadrupled in size and I’ve got to clean it up but I think I’m gonna do your way better. I had cut it just from the sides and had about 100 150 different leaves all over the place and I route of them just fine no problem I think I lost one out of the bunch but I will put it straight into water within four or five days most all of them had route some took about seven days but that’s how I sell my plants and it’s quick and easy as long as they have the right amount of sun which they do they were pretty much route anytime you just throw them in water has to be filtered though it’s better to be filter I should say they’re pretty hearty. Thanks for showing me this though

Perfect! Clear, utterly bonkers, right up my street. NOTE:- the plastic used in carrier bags causes a problem at recycling centres because it is the wrong kind of plastic for rubbish collection (garbage). Makes no sense to me either, but use 'bin' bags in bins. Different plastic which they can collect and reuse/recycle. If you have too many shopping bags, ( I have them all over, pockets, car, glovebox, rolled up and secured with a hair tie, and use them till they are NFG) in the uk there is at the bigger stores usually a collection point for them. Then they can be processed correctly. Good job on the video! cheers!

Could you do an update video? I just noticed that my Umbrella Plant has TONS of nodes at the very bottom of the stem, my umbrella plant is very very young when I bought them from the store and I’ve always wanted to propagate them. I realized they were nodes on the stem AFTER I had propagated a ton of pothos! My umbrella plants grows so much since it’s been in direct sunlight and it grows roots nonstop, one of my friends told me that you can cut the new roots and propagate them that way but I’m not too sure if it’s true and if it works. But I’d like to see how your original Umbrella Plant is growing from where it was cut and how your new propagated plant is doing!

Thanks. I hate youtubers but you seem like a normal person. I just got my first schefflera and he's growing nicely. He's 13" in a 9" wide pot. How big should I let him get before I take some cuttings?

Hello mam... It is always nice to see all your videos. Mam my schefflera plant soil have lots of ants in it, i am worried if it harms my plant. I have put some turmeric and Cennemon power in soil but doesn't show any change, so it will be great if u help. Secondly mam i have only two points in my plant from where new buds are coming, so is it okey? Bcz it doesn't make my plant bushy.

@Macksimize I have inherited a very tall Schefflera which has very few branches/leaves at the bottom. Is there a way to encourage it to grow new branches in the middle? Thank you for any advice

Wondering if you might know! I successfully rooted two Schefflera leaf stems in water (it took months). I had nothing to lose since they broke off when my plant blew over. Once the roots were about 3"-4" long, I planted them in soil. It is now a year later and they look the same as when I planted them. No growth, no change whatsoever. Any idea what's going on (rather, what's not going on) with this? :D

There needs to be a node on the cutting. Propagating just the leaf stems without additional nodes (where new growth can push through) will result in a leaf being just a leaf forever.

Ok, so forgive me for not having proper terminology. I have a ton of plants that are all thriving surprisingly but know nothing about most. My umbrella tree is soooo tall and I’m scared to cut it to shorten it fearing that it will die. Where you cut yours is higher up where the leaves are nice and fluffy. I’d like to cut mine where it’s thicker but has no leaves. Make sense???? Like the torso of the plant 🤷🏻‍♀️😝 if i do that will it still grow roots and be ok?

@Macksimize100
@Macksimize100 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I made a follow up video and it took about four months for a root to pop out in water. You can also try air layering propagation, I made a video about it as well - worked a lot faster!

Hi - Wondering if you can help me with a large schefflera that was at my place of work that I adopted and now brought home. It's in a 10 inch pot and is incredibly rootbound. There is a loop of root coming out of the top of the soil that is at least 1 inch in diameter. When I take this out of the pot, should I attempt to disentangle some of the roots? Should I cut any? Really enjoy your videos and you were the first person I thought of when I brought this baby home. Thanks!

@Macksimize100
@Macksimize100 4 жыл бұрын
Oh my gosh I LOVE the variegated Schefflera, your boyfriend is a smart man 😂 - So those offshoots might be stemmed from the mother plant, hard to say without looking at it, but the only way to know is to take the plant out of the soil and check - you can check without harming the plant just be very gentle with the root ball as you do it! You can easily separate the babies if they have their own root system separate from the mother stem if that makes sense, then gently cut them off and pot them up in their own house/pot

I have a large schefflera amate these are much larger leaved variety they do throw up small new growth occasionally it's mini version problem is if I follow it back to the leaf joint and cut below the stem joint I now have the mini stem plus great big leaves that would be difficult to cover with a plastic bag. I guess I could try the other methods tissue paper or water in a jar method. Any ideas?

I'm trying to save a plant that is two sticks about 3 ft long, and only one of them has leaves on it. This thing belongs to someone else who got it from her mother's funeral so I'm trying to save it. Will it grow from an empty stem as long as I cut it low enough to get green stem?
@Macksimize100
@Macksimize100 3 жыл бұрын
Wow 3 feet is a good height! I think if you trim it back like you said, that could trigger new growth! I know when I cut mine back three new stems grow from the cut area, so I hope that works out! And as hard as it can be, patience is key with plants 😊 Might take a WHILE to see growth 😂
