How to properly mix concrete

Mixing concrete is not an easy task. Lucky for us, we don't have to mix it the old way anymore, where we used to have to mix the sand and the cement together to get our concrete mix.
Nowadays, we can buy bags of properly mixed concrete with exact ratios of all the concrete ingredients we need. Watch me mix two bags of Quikrete concrete mix by hand in a wheelbarrow.
A similar wheelbarrow can be found here amzn.to/3fcfyin

Tip from a pro on another channel I found too late for my pad I just did this morning: add one digging shovel of Portland cement to the bag of concrete to get more cream stuff at the top. The solution to all the stones and roughness.

Here is my tip. Once you get a lot of the dry mix in the back of the wheel barrow, start using the hoe from the front. The long slope of the front allows you to drag more concrete, the water doesn't splash as much and the I think the wheel barrow is more stable. My second tip is use 60 pound bags if you are old :)

@@NeverStopDIY I showed my dad the video and he scoffed at using a hoe and told me about the good old days when the Irish navies used a shovel. I started with there hoe and he came in after with his shovel. I think the hoe method is great, especially if there is just one person, just takes time. The shovel method seems to take far more energy. We mixed 8 bags of 80LB in no time for the bar, worked great.
@NeverStopDIY
@NeverStopDIY 2 жыл бұрын
@Jacana Productions I have used the shovel method and that is a good way to mix bigger amounts of concrete, but you need two people, maybe even three to pour water. The way you do it is you would form a long line of sand and rocks 1-2 feet wide and pour cement on top. Each person would take a shovel and start flipping the material at the same time from one end to the other. This is how you dry mix the materials. Once that is mixed, you would spread it apart forming a pond like structure and pour water inside. You mix it up a little and repeat the 2 person flipping process from one end to the other. You would add more water as needed along the process.

Another tip I learned from my experienced uncle is to first add the total amount of water for one bag or two in the wheelbarrow, then cut the bags in half on a table (or on the floor) while putting a metal pipe underneath them and cutting them with a blade on top. You just pull the pipe upwards and the bag splits in two and you can add one half at a time while mixing. It makes for an easier less tiring mix

I can't tell for sure but I am thinking that the small amount of concrete might be the problem. This type of concrete is meant to be poured in larger amounts. I am pretty sure if you go bigger, you won't have this problem. Make sure you let it dry for several days as well.

How much time do you have to pour that and then mix another batch before the first pour Dries?
@bartektodde
@bartektodde 8 ай бұрын
It depends on how wet/dry you mixed the 1st batch. Also, weather temperature, humidity, and on how dry/wet the ground you're going to pour the concrete on. If the condition(s) are dry, then mix the 1st batch wet and thinner so it won't dry out before the 2nd batch is ready.

If you check out the bag he used and read what is in it per ATSM it meets the definition of concrete which is sand, Portland cement, and stone that is mixed with water per the instructions. When you mix it properly per the instructions and let it set, maybe 1- 2 hours the mix has cured enough to trowel it smooth. You can float it before that then let it harden up more. If you try to finish it too early the rocks won't settle and you'll see them. If you wait too long then it is very difficult to finish smooth.
