2 more tips: 1. CLEAN any previously painted/finished surface BEFORE sanding. Otherwise you may be grinding dirt/grime into the old paint. 2. Hand sanding as in video is always good, but sanding sponges/pads are also good for lightly profiled mouldings- they can take the shape of the contours as they sand. Just be careful to not get too aggressive or burn-out can result as mentioned in the video.

Does anyone have suggestions for what to do when burn through occurrs? I needed to wtch this BEFORE starting my project!! Also the paint has been knicked clear off my trim in places so I think that would need similar treatment. Thanks!
@savageredbeard2 жыл бұрын
This is a little late but there's nothing you can do but smooth out the area around the burn through as to make it even with the surrounding paint, then add a few extra coats to that area. We all do it from time to time and that about all you can do, unless you've cut into the wood too deep, then you'll need to put some wood putty in the area and sand it when it's dry to even it out.

Repainting inside my house, I initially used the popular chemical deglosser for trim. It took forever & I never could really see it take the "gloss off" which was its name. Using 220 grit is a million times quicker and you can tell easily when you are deglossed. The stff may be good for highly irregular surfaces but for trim like this 220 is way to go. Good video! Thanks
@Matasky20103 жыл бұрын
The whole advantage of using deglosser is that it eliminates the need for sanding. If used properly the deglosser should do it's job- taking off the sheen and letting new paint adhere to old.

No you don’t have to sand all of it away. You only need to dull down the sheen on the surface. Make sure that you sand at least 90% of the surface. Does that help?

Hi! Many thanks for this video! Which paper numer do you recomend for a wood door painted before with oil paint?
@darinbambrick3543 Жыл бұрын
Does not matter if oil or latex. It depends upon the condition of the paint. If the surface is really bad because of heavy brush marks or because there are many coats of paint over bad conditions. Then wet sand with 150 grit. If it’s in really good condition then use 220 grit. If it’s in perfect condition, you still have to sand the surface to “open up” The surface so that your new paint can “grab” The surface and hold on to it permanently. If the surface is near perfect then sand with 320 or 400 grit. Always wipe clean the sanding residue that is left over from wet sanding. Hope that helps

I wonder if the wet sanding would work on sanding plaster smooth the day after it is applied to walls?
@rbbc9165 жыл бұрын
It works, but not very well. You won't get a feathered edge into the existing wall finish. Rather, you will end up with a ridge around your patched area, which will eventually show up in your finish coat.
@rbbc9165 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay. There is a technique for plaster/ dry wall repairs. I like to use durabond brown bag product. It's a harder finish and is more durable. However, it is a little more difficult to sand. What other content would interest you on this channel?

Wet sanding plaster is done differently. This procedure does not work well. You'd have to work the plaster while it hardens fit is still damp
No. I use #220 grit. I buy from Home Depot because their sand paper has a wax back for the water doesn’t destroy it

Some lazy animal painted the doors and frames so badly that they have paint runs, dirt balls stuck in paint and marks all over the surface. They painted OVER the trim and locks and everything as well. Just absolute scum. I'm thinking of smoothing the surface by wet sanding with finer grit sand paper instead of an entire repaint. Then I'm just going to touch up any areas I go through to the wood with sandpaper with some light paint and polish the doors with automotive polish. Let's see...
