How To Properly Time a VR6 With Head Gasket Spacer

In this video we will properly install timing chains on a VR6 engine with a 5mm head gasket spacer. This spacer is meant to drop compression down for turbo application. Installing the spacer is easy. Timing the engine however can be tricky, and is a little more difficult than a stock R32 VR6 engine. This really applies to any 24v VR6 engines with a spacer that requires a 1 link longer chain.

Hi @HumbleMechanic I know you may get this a lot but I own a 2019 Volkswagen GLI 35th Anniversary Edition 2.0T 6MT. I was wondering if you have a trick or possibly coding information to remove the rev hang. I love this car but the rev hang sucks! I know a lot of people are looking for a solution or help as far as lowering how much rev hang there is! If you could make a video with details on how to remove it or why people can't remove it that would be great! I know other car manufacturers allow you to code this out, but no one has been able to solve VWs

Please help. I have a 2009 Hyundai sonata 2.4 cylinder and I replaced the alternator. Fairly easy job. But after I replaced it I started the car up and went for a ride. Everything seemed fine until I came to a stop sign and as soon as I pressed on the brake the car stalled. Not only does it do that but when the engine is cold the idle looks good but as soon as it warms up the idle drops down to a low 400 to 500 rpm and if I rev it up it will stall when idle comes back down. I had none of these problems before replacing the alternator. I did not touch any vacume lines while replacing the alternator. I'm totally baffled. Before I start replacing things I figured I would try and get some help first. Also I get no codes.

Very good job HB! I did this several times on my 625 hp build. It's nerve wracking but I never ended up outta timing afterwards. Gotta leaking cam cover now. Hopefully I can reseal it without having to do this timing again whew....

I have removed a 3.6 head with the cams 180 degrees out, then upon reassembly, I rotated the cams back to proper TDC timing. It was extremely difficult to get the upper chain installed (the HPFP is involved) and even when it was, it seemed like the crank marks were slightly off. I went ahead with it anyway and was met with timing DTCs. Removed cams, rotated crank 360 and now everything lined up perfectly. That intermediate gear can be 180 out and put everything off a half a tooth. It must have an odd number of teeth.

This is exactly what i had to do, essentially i timed it old school just with crank TDC with cams locked and ignored the IM gear markings as they become irrelevant, this made the chain perfectly tight on the inlet variator. it was weird and i was very sceptical about starting my engine, but it ran perfect and im more then happy, VCDS comfirmed it was ok.

Was it tight when U put chain on because for me we’re I had to tap intermediate in and bolting and repeat she timed good by the belt and with head spacer by a hair off on the intermediate which is normal with head spacer… but cams are off by a hair is she still good to go???? I wanna build it but I’m biting my nails off

Hi there, first of all great video. I have one question on the timing. I made 2 full rotations everything lines up but the exhaust cam. The timing on the sprocket of that cam lines up perfect. Is this because there is no oil in the system yet? Or do I have to do something about it? R36 engine Thank you

I have 108,400 miles on my almost 19 year old 2003 GTI VR6 (24v), purchased in October 2002. Original chains still holding up well on this daily driver. How much longer can I expect them to last without needing adjustment or change?

i have a 24 valve 2.8 that had timing chain noise. i ended up replacing chains and adjusters. engine runs great but its still noisy. i made the mistake of not doing the intermediate sprockets but looked ok. it still noisy sounds like coming from cam phaser. do they usually go bad or doing you think i have another issue ? 133k 2002 eurovan.

Hi, I am using a 2012 VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI. Currently, it shows "P2015 Sensor for intake manifold flap position bank 1: range/performance". Is there something I could do before order new intake manifold with Sensor & Solenoid Valve? Hopefully you will respond to my comment. Thank you in advance.

Wow 7.0:1 compression, that's super low. Like mid '80's turbo engine low, off boost response is going to be pretty bad, isn't it? Are you running really high boost levels on this?

might have some lag but mostly depends on the size of the turbo. Most turbo engines run low compression. The old school was run a really big turbo and let it lag. New school is smaller turbo or twin turbos. One really small and one big. To eliminate lag. I think Charles will get it right.

@@HumbleMechanic I'm nearing my mid forties now and remember the old school way of turbo tuning i.e. low static compression then throw loads of boost and fuel at it but I was under the impression that with the precise control of modern fuel and ignition systems that even moderately high boost levels say 1 to 1.5 bar are fine on a 9.0:1-10.0:1 compression ratio motor these days. Are high octane pump fuels not readily available in the states? I'm in the UK and 99 ron petrol is pretty common here.

How to take the VVT solenoids out on this engine. I've taken 2 small bolts off but the solenoid is not coming out, it's spinning. Are they bolted at the back, I can see the star screw at the back of each solenoid? Thanks

So by changing the balance shaft location which doesn't matter for anything but nvh. Like old 2.2 Hondas with a water pump and a double timing belt. They put timing marks on the pump but mention nothing of it in wsm

When I did mine, I fought the same issue and never contacted HPA and wound up getting there by shaving the black guide down instead.

Hello fellow dubheads. I have a 1994 Corrado with the 8v 2.0 engine. I bring the car to operating Temperature, then shut it down. Start it back up and it boggs down for 30 seconds then it works fine again. Any ideas? Thanks!

The only time you need to mess with the cover is when you have head or block machined

That is how I did this one. You can also drill out rivets and separate the HG bits. I did that on my GTI. Both work just fine

Would this apply for any thickness spacer? Im looking at a 2.1mm spacer. How can I tell If I will need a longer chain?

I "think" with that small of a spacer, you can run the stock chain.

That part where you show the cam bridge and to check the filter screen, it almost implies that filter screens on VW's are a noteworthy trouble spot. This can't be true, a filter screen can't possibly cause issues on literally every engine Volkswagen has put them in since the dawn of time. 😂

Make sure you put a dab of rtv on the two pin holes in both head gaskets right on the edge of the cylinder head at the opening for the timing chain or it will leak oil. Ask me how I know :)

7:1 compression is ridiculously low. I have R32 turbo with 8.5:1 and I think that’s too low. 9:1 would probably be best for 98 RON.

Yeah that is dumb, I'd rather have to use E85, octane booster or methanol injection but stay higher compression and get all of the torque. 7:1 is what people ran in the 70's with beetle engines, it's dumb low, it's gonna feel doggy when out of boost, and it'll take forever to build boost. Realistically yeah 9:1-9.2:1 is perfect with premium fuel and a good tune, honestly not a VR6 guy, am a BMW guy and I know that on the M5x platform many people stay stock compression (10:1 more or less depends on the exact model) even on higher boost as long as it's on e85 it's fine, see no reason why the VR couldn't do that.

The chains dont ride on 'gears' they ride on 'sprockets'.

Well Charles, I'm sure the VW community will appreciate your expertise, for sure. I'm just not a fan of that particular crank/cam set up.. sorry Charles.. I realize you didn't design it and your working with what you have been handed.I come from the ooold school.. American engines with straight crank / cam gears.. think about Texas tractor pulls with 5 syncronized blown motors going to1 rear axle...PTOV

Unfortunately no, but it seems that you have changed the person who was responsible for editing the videos in the past. Just look at your other videos and you will see how they were edited and published so fast!

Other than a handful of videos I’m the one the does everything, top to bottom. But you’re in luck. The main reason content was slow the last few weeks is a HUGE series coming out in a few weeks. It will end up being about 6 videos. You’re going to love it.
