I would also recommend using grounded conduit on the wiring from your EMP shields to your devices. Exposed wiring is how an EMP pulse is coupled into your system. RF ferrite chokes on the solar panel field side of the metal conduit feed would help to minimize transient spikes on the DC side. Isolation transformers to your grid side with gross fail, isolation fuses (grid side) would also help when parasitic, inductive bursts are present on the grid. The ground should also be wrapped around a large iron mass (at least 5 wraps) with a fused shunt around the coil to minimize ground wave, telluric current.
@robertjefferson13726 ай бұрын
If there was a solar flare, wouldn't that cause a power surge to backfeed from the grid into the inverter?
@nonsquid6 ай бұрын
Hello Robert, I know that is the current thinking that the grid will back feed, but that is why I mentioned the isolation transformers on the grid side. I believe that the major cause of EMP damage is not from induced current from the exposed wiring, but from the telluric earth currents that back feed through the grounded systems, During the Carrington event of 1859 it was noted that some railroad tracks were thermally warped. The inductive EMP burst was too short to have that effect. It had to be telluric earth currents that warped the rail. @@robertjefferson1372

Id be willing to bet those boxes do nothing. If it was a thermal dump, there isn't enough mass. If its an air gap cut-off or regulator would arc 10 of those box lengths no problem.

EMP needs MILES of high power tension lines to build up power. Where were the trash cans and water fountains exploding during the Kerrington event? IF you are off grid you have nothing to worry about. Any most likly the 150 year emp was in July 2012 and it missed us by 2 weeks.

Not sure how this could possibly work??? I can see it as a surge protector, such as would be needed for lightning; but an EMP works completely differently, not just traveling through conventional wire (which actually amplifies the effect, but the effect is still present without regard to wire or wire length). Can someone clarify exactly how this works...
@scarygary35692 жыл бұрын
Just installed same EMP Shield on my Titan and I also have some broadband ferrite packs on my wire bundles to help reduce the transients even more before they reach the shield.

I really want these people that make that "EMP Shield" device, to explain to me EXACTLY how their device is anything better than a glorified lightning / surge arrestor. Lightning protection is a real thing, and I recommend it. But it's available for far cheaper than these things.
@pthithic2 жыл бұрын
It can be a glorified surge arrester and still be worth the additional money The design of the product acts much more quickly than a traditional surge protector made for lightning If you look into a (nuclear) EMP there are three different components of the pulse and a traditional surge arrester will not respond fast enough to protect you

@libertyrights12912 жыл бұрын
This is only a single point solution. Actually, a Gaussian enclosure is required to house the electronics. Also adequate filtering in and out of the shielded enclosure is needed. Hint: EMP does not only travel on incoming power lines. Also, what will the "protected" power connect to?

I have a six foot deep ground rod on my solar panel array too. Are they good for multiple EMPs or are they fried after one? I’ve always figured that if Russia or China hit us with an EMP they would hit us with a second one a few days or weeks later to further disrupt the recovery effort
@bp9682 жыл бұрын
Apparently the worst part of an emp is the 3rd pulse which has a long duration. Its unlikely to effect smaller things like phones or PCs or even cars, but definitely will effect the power lines and grid. I would think hardening your controllers from lightning storms would help and having some sort of hard disconnect fuse for the grid connection so that the first short high intensity pulse pops the fuse and physically disconnects your system from the grid entirely. Having to replace a physical fuse is a small price to pay to be the only guy with power. Of course you might want to buy some guns and make friends with the neighbors so they benefit from you having power and are inclined to help protect your now very valuable piece of property!

The phone company for years has been doing something interesting to keep there equipment from blowing up they have a square insulator it has 2 metal squares with the 2 lines that go the phones wires and a wider strip that is as wide as the other 2 squares it is connect to a ground rod the gap between these plates forms a T and is around a 1/16 inch if any high voltage comes down any of the wires it jumps the gap and goes to ground. We’ve had lightning strikes that blew up our refrigerators computers off brand phones but the bell phones with that little plate with the gap worked fine with no problems. Years ago one of my relatives was sitting on his bed playing his violin 🎻 during a lightning ⚡️ storm the lightning shot out from the phone next to him hitting him he died and the violin broke my brother still has the violin we had it repaired later the phone company installed those little spark arresters they do work great and don’t cost thousands of dollars

I have been told by a EMP shield rep. that we should get an other device to protect our batteries. So there is the AC side, DC side and the batteries apparently. What do you think ?
@handle3179 Жыл бұрын
So I believe this holds true in every state. If you NET meter to sell power back to the grid. If there’s and emergency the power company will send a kill switch to the inverter and shit out down. So when you need the power most you wont be able to use it. Due to the fact they can’t have power being sent to the lines when workers are working on the lines. If you want a off grid with a grid assist. You are still on the grid but you are only using the power when you need. Like a battery back up for your computer. My growatt runs panels battery then grid. So its ally charging at night at the lowest rate.
@Subgunman2 жыл бұрын
What about your grid in/out connection. It too should be protected by one of these devices. Even though you have all of the solar array mounting grid grounded I know for fact that that will not channel all of the discharge to earth ground. I have worked as a FCC licensed communications tech for close to thirty years and I have seen the net result of lightning doing a direct hit on a grounded tower and or antenna. The results were devastating, especially today when we see far more severe storms hitting everywhere even the lightning discharges seem to have increased in Intensity. At the point of earth ground are you using a single ground rod or are there buried radials extending out from the rod(s) to help dissipate the discharge? The more the radials and the deeper they are the better. That is an impressive system you have installed, how might you compare Midnight solars new style inverters to the older modular inverters? If one inverter died in the old system you could take it out for service without disrupting the whole system, how is a failure with the new system?
@glasslinger2 жыл бұрын
THE SOLAR PANELS WILL NOT BE DAMAGED! Did you see that note on the screen? This shows this is total hokeypoke! Anyone that TRULY knows about EMP will tell you directly that solar panels will all be instantly fried. They are like giant antennas that are sitting ducks for the emp pulse! This is simply an advertisement for that company selling their gadgets that will not be any more useful than a bucket of water.

@markarmitage9469 Жыл бұрын
If you don't have extra solar panels stored in a Faraday cage you are going to be disappointed. A photovoltaic solar panel will be completely destroyed by a powerful electromagnetic pulse (EMP). If the power is high enough, the metal coating the solar panel will be so hot that the metal vaporizes right off the silicon and then ignites into a fireball with oxygen in the air around the panel. A Photovoltaic cell is covered with a fine grid of conductors to collect charges across the surface of the wafer. These fine grids will most likely vaporize when hit with a strong EMP, and then also the induced current will burn through the thin silicon wafer so the conductors on opposite sides can arc across and discharge the pulse current.

I had to buy another controller and the EMP people would NOT honor their "so called" warranty. If you have any solar controller do NOT attach this item as you risk damage and they will NOT honor the warranty.
