Yes, that's the evergreen "Southern Magnolia" and very nice too, but a different type to the deciduous one that David was working on in his garden.

If it is a deciduous one (one that drops its leaves in autumn like here in David's video) the best time is after it finishes flowering in late spring. If you care to tune in again around the 3 minute mark you will hear David explain more about this timing and why its important. On the other hand if your plant is one of the evergreen sorts, then you can do it over a longer time period - in fact from spring through summer and even in winter. The only time to avoid would be late summer early fall, because there's a chance you might stimulate new growth that might be vulnerable to cold weather going into winter. Hope this helps. They are known as the "Kosar or DeVos hybrids" . Here's a link to a video that David filmed many years ago (when the same plant was small) that will explain more about them.
