Organic basil will fill your garden with a beautiful aroma when it is handled, it will also fill the meals you use it in with exceptional flavor. Basil can be eaten fresh, made into a soothing tea and even dried for preservation as an herbal seasoning for later use in cooking. I have dehydrated basil from last year in my cupboard and it still smells and tastes amazing! This video discusses basil and how to trim it (also referred to as pruning) in a way that won't cause damage to the plant and will allow it to continue growing. Growing basil is very rewarding not only for those who enjoy eating it, but for other plants as well. Basil is a herb that makes a good companion plant for tomatoes as they tend to repel destructive tomato hornworms. Basil is an easy plant to grow and is quite hardy. Just give your basil plants ample water and sunlight, and watch it grow!

With the cut off tops you can root them as well to propagate more basil plants. I just cut them off and place them in a cup of water until they grow roots and then plant them in the garden. I did it for the first time about a week ago and they are still alive .

Does dipping them in honey and placing them in soil work? I tryed placing them in water and they never propagated.

So glad you found the video informative. I love basil pesto! I also love to use basil in soups, on corn and it adds such a nice flavor to pizza and spaghetti. I haven't found any store bought basil that matches the taste of fresh basil picked from your own garden. Thank you for watching and commenting!

I've heard planting the flowers stems that grow out the top back in the ground can make new basil plants? Is this true or is there amother way?

***** Thank you for watching the video and commenting. Yes you can grow other plants from basil plants by cutting the stem. You can also do this with tomato's and many other type of plants through this process known as plant propagation. :)

I got two bushes of basil I seed planted in my perennial patch. But after you said horn worms hate it. I'm going to intersperse it next year with my tomatoes. I'm also going to surround my garden next year with a raised row of dill, garlic, basil, peppers, marigolds and other plants that are natural deterrents to pests.

This is my first year gardening, and the basil is coming in nice and strongly. I came looking for just this video, and you answered all of my questions. My plant is still only about 6" tall, and doesn't have any flowers. Compared to what I see your plant looking like, I think I should let it continue to mature. Thank you!

Nice video, thanks! I always plant several basil plants, this year I have been so so busy that I have not had time to head them all. So a couple have gone to flower and seed.. Found out yesterday yellow finches LOVE them! All of a sudden I had 8 finches, male and female devouring the seeds.. so from now on, I will let some go each year.. lol.

Great video, very informative. I'm making basil pesto tonight and I wanted to make sure that the basil would recover from a major harvest. I have noticed that there comes a time down here in South Africa where the plants go into full flower production and pretty much give up with producing new leaves. Then its time to have your last spagetti sauce with what's left.

I didn't know they had such pretty flowers. Fresh basil is so good mixed in with cold pasta, chopped tomato, bite size chunks of mozzarella and olive oil. the more basil the better!!! I just planted my first one because I got frustrated with only finding bitter basil. How can I keep mine sweet? Great video...exactly what I needed. 😊
@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 8 жыл бұрын
So glad you found the video informative! If you want to avoid a bitter plant, prune your plant often. After the flowers grow a long stem will begin growing from the top of the plant past the flower areas. If allowed to grow unchecked the plant can become more bitter than some people prefer after that stage. Hope that helps!
@MemorySparksJoy
@MemorySparksJoy 8 жыл бұрын
+HomesteadersFreedom Thank you, it does help! I don't care for it when its bitter, it has a much fresher taste when it's sweet so you make sense when you say prune often. 😋

If you remove the flower buds before they open. You can let them dry out and plant them. New basil will grow from them since they contain seeds

Thanks for posting this video! We have started to grow basil from a starter plant, for our cooking and for our guinea pigs (they love it!) Yes you can! I've done both but have better luck when I use the water first. I done direct planting and sometimes it works for me, other times not so much. I think it depends on a lot of factors like time of year, type of plant, weather conditions..etc.

Thanks so much for watching and commenting! We planted about 8 basil plants last year that all did well, some were seed plants some were not. I don't remember if the one in this video was one of the harvest plants or seed plants. I was getting a lot of questions on how to prune them from folks who would pass by, so a short video on pruning was done. I hope you get abundant harvests from your basil plants! Were waiting for ours to grow now, we just planted seeds a few days ago. Hope they grow fast, were running low on seasoning and can't wait to dry them out and make some tasty dried basil seasoning for cooking. Do you use your basil fresh, dried, or both?

Thank you for watching and commenting. Were hoping to have a few videos uploaded before the end of the year. Most of the heavier video production will pick up again during the coming spring and summer.

If you grow your basils in some shade, you will get better looking basil plants. My 2 cents.

Very informative video. May I ask please what video camera you would recommend and the best video editing software? Tx so much for your advice.
@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 9 жыл бұрын
+Shoba Sadler Thank you for watching and commenting! I have no idea what to recommend, it really depends on what your looking to accomplish with your videos and what level of quality you want. There are many different cameras for different applications. What I currently use is a Sony Handy Cam with high definition features. For video editing tools you can use windows movie maker (comes with Windows OS), or you can use more professional software like Sony Vegas or other types of editing software. As with the cameras, there are so many video editing software programs available, you'll have to decide what you want to accomplish through the software. I mostly use Movie Maker contained within Widows OS for the YT videos.

I live in an older home with potential of lead poisoning in the surrounding soil. I grow my herbs in containers outside but never get a great Harvest only mediocre to my cooking needs. Any Ideas for Container Growing and Harvesting!
@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 8 жыл бұрын
+Ronda Goodlet Thank you for watching and commenting! Container gardening is a great option to use in situations like that. The soil in containers (especially plastic ones) dry out much quicker than ground soil because it lacks the cooling effect that the earth provides. Water container plants frequently, check back during peak heat hours of the day to make sure the soil is still moist. Keep at least one to two inches of thick mulch over the bed of the soil in your container. This helps the plant retain more water, slows evaporation and helps cool the soil. If production output is sluggish resulting in a low harvest, consider the soil nutrient content. A fertilizer that provides trace elements would most likely be very beneficial for you. Most standard plant food fertilizers provide N (Nitrogen), P(Phosphorus), K (Potassium) which is essential for plant health and growth, but other trace elements are also very important to overall plant health such as magnesium, copper and many others. I use azomite in my gardens to provide those trace elements. I'm sure azomite is not the only thing that can be used to provide that, but its what I'm familiar with and it works well for our garden. I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for this video!! I have heard that you are suppose to prune or harvest before it flowers or it will be bitter. Have you found this to be true?
@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 9 жыл бұрын
Ladiebug Lane Thank you for watching and commenting! I honestly haven't noticed any bitterness, perhaps its because I dry them out and use them for dried seasoning for cooking.

I got about a hundred basil plants 2 ft tall trimmed topped them all when started to flower but seems to keep wanting to flower what's going on anybody know? not cutting enough? I hacked them back pretty good even the smaller ones wanting to bud- might just rip them all out if I can't get them to grow bigger without flowering

Thank you for watching Homesteaders Freedom and for commenting. You probably need to do some heavy pruning, but you did say you hacked them back pretty far. It hard to gauge without seeing how the plants were cut and being familiar with their growing conditions. What do you do with your basil? You grow quite a bit of basil, do you sell it? Again, thank you for visiting! :)

How to colect basil seeds?? Thanks great imfo
@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Homesteaders Freedom! If you want to harvest seeds, just allow the basil plant to grow and it will put out seeds that you can collect. When I plant basil I normally plant at least one basil plant that doesn't get heavily pruned. Eventually it bolts and puts out seed that can be collected.

Your Basil leaves will not taste as good when you let the plant flower. I always pinch mine off before then.

@HomesteadersFreedom
@HomesteadersFreedom 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and commenting. Yes you can harvest the basil before it flowers. You also can keep it in the container it came in, but if the container is not a large one, its best to put in in a larger container or to put it in the garden so it's roots have enough space to spread out.

I rescued some old basil plants from my garden that had been a bit neglected and brought them inside and repotted them in a nice big pot with good soil and they seem to be growing very slowly. I am not over watering , they get lots of sun....they just seem to stay small. I love basil and am really frustrated with growing it . I never get those gorgeous big leaves and I dont know what I'm doing wrong lol. Please help!

I am no expert by any means, but from some research I don't think that they thrive well indoors. Maybe try getting them outside for 6-8 hours of sun :)
