In this video you will learn the simple steps you need to take to prune a blackcurrant bush. The reason why you need to prune blackcurrants is because you need to allow space for new shoots that will fruit more and allow space for the plant to breathe to allow sunlight through to ripen all of the fruits.
With the pruning waste you can easily turn them into cuttings like this: • Propagating Blackcurra...

Thanks for all you do, you break down the description of what you are talking about in your videos so that even I can understand. Many who do videos skip common steps that matter, but if you don't know really make a difference in the outcome. I only have 4 currants, 2 black, 2 red, but with your help I plan to have many, many more...

@@HuwRichards I live in Houston, Texas. I desperately want red and/or black currants in my backyard, but I presume that's too hot (Zone 9a). Curious to know if planting them in pots would work; recommendations? ...advice? Thank you ahead of time!!! Thank you for the advice. I have inherited four Blackcurrant bushes on the Allotment I have taken on. The bushes are very overgrown and don't look as if they have ever been pruned, I took out a lot of old growth in the winter, with more old growth still on the bushes( I wanted to have some fruit ) What I would like to know is would it do the bushes any harm if I took some Hight off of them as they are tall and quite lax in their growth.

Thanks! I have a uestion. It's August, my garden is getting a big makeover (long story) and we had to replant soms two years old rasberrybushes. It's hot a dry so they are drooping. Should I prune them now or leave them alone? I am watering everyday and we fed them dried cow manure.

one book I have suggests that if you prune in summer, that is when the plant has more of a chance at curing the wound because it is not dormant so summer prunning might not be such a bad idea. Of course a vine bleeds like hell if you cut it in late winter, but not so later on, maybe it is like a maple, it takes up a lot of water on cold nights and then the sun, on sunny winter days, possible stronger where there is a continental climate and so less cloud, makes the pressure in the tree build up like crazy and the sap, the unelaborated sap, just dashes everywhich way. Look up sap flow in sugar maples if you want to see an account of this. . Also, the same book o pruninning said that if you cut in winter when the sap is down then there is not enough tree or bush for all the stored goodness and it will produce a lot of suckers in spring, maybe good in this case.

So you take your cutting in the fall/autumn when the leaves have fallen off? Nice video by the way, Thanks you. My other questions. I wouldn't ask but I only have one bush of the variety I like. Usually I plant two or more of a variety. I've forgotten the name of it but I'd like more. Also do Currants do well in hedgerows? 1. When to take cuttings? I'm in the U.S. but many videos are from friends in the U.K. 2. any particular place to take the cuttings from the bush? 3. Can long branches be cut to plant? Do the cuttings all have to come from the tips of the bush? 4. Will taking cuttings in the fall be okay or must they be taken in the spring? 5. How much of the production of the bush be lost when taking cuttings in the spring? 6. i had planned to take cuttings now in the fall and cover with a cloche. Will that work?

Nice video Huw. There is an easier way if you have more than three bushes. This advice I picked up years ago from HDRA now Grow Organic. Divide your bushes into three sections, cut down the first section the first year to just above ground level. Then section two after the second year and then the third section after the third year. In the fourth year you start the cycle again. You do lose fruit production the year following but the bushes make up for it the following years. I have been doing this now for a number of years and has been no problems. Pete

Hi-what do you recommend for a young plant with tons of shoots. I want to make the plant a little smaller, it's crowding another plant. Maybe I could cut the big overgrown one all the way down like you suggested.

I grow 2 blackcurrant plants of the variety 'Jonkheer van tets'. I have read somewhere that if a branch comes into contact with soil for a while, then roots can come out of the branch and a new clone plant can grow. Does this method actually work? and also, at what age do Blackcurrants produce fruit?

I have been once told that you can prune a bush for an easy harvest e.g. if my currants are all ready and I prune out the older wood, I can then take the currants off the pruned bits. What do you say?

I have a serious question, for my getting my bachelor degree we are studying vineyard prunings wastes and the possiblity of using these as an alternative energy source for fossil fuels or the collection and antioxidants, phenols etc.. No my question is what normally happens to these wastes? I've read they are sometimes left in the field as fertiliser or burned? I also guess you can collect them and bring them to a colletion point where they are later incinerated? Thanks in advance and sorry for bad english
