That was fun, David Scissorhands! ☺️ I truly love chopping away as mentioned before (hairstylist by profession, or is that actually, gardener now) 😊 I have 3 different kinds of spireas. I so wanted that gorgeous colorful one of yellow, orange, green, but could not located at the time of planting. I have critters in my woodland setting where I live. Unfortunately "some critter" decided to "park itself" in the middle of one, leaving a flattened center. I should be but will certainly do soon, take string and tie around it so it can finds it way back to its rounded habit! Thanks for sharing! 🍀😊

As you know, they regrow well from trimming, so if it was my plant I would probably prune back the displaced branches and let it regenerate naturally again.

Thanks for sharing this. Spiraeas and very reliable and resilient, and as you've discovered, they respond well to trimming too. So removing old spent flower heads, tired or diseased foliage is a good way to rejuvenate them and keep them bushy and colorful too. Plus obviously, removing the diseased foliage helps to reduce the opportunity for the disease spores to spread or re-infect too. Have you subscribed to our channel? Thanks for your kind comments, its nice to hear from you. As you've probably noticed, this video was filmed in early spring just as the buds were breaking but with robust growers with attractive foliage (like these) that doesn't matter much because in our nursery we trim them all the time at different times during the growing season. That's why when you view these other videos (also on this channel): studio.kzfaq.info/love/gfi7rt7jLrh4Hg01wKScdwvideos you will see tight, shapely, manicured plants that are bushy and very attractive when all the little shoots grow back out. The only time you wouldn't trim them, would be when the shoots are starting to make flower buds. So, in your case maybe, you would consider letting them grow out and flower and then trim off the old spent flower stems. That way you will get the benefits of seeing the flowers, and then be able to re-shape and invigorate your plants and then enjoy another round of flowering, once the new shoots grow out AGAIN! As you might notice in these (in nursery) videos, we trim them multiple time during the year, so you could if you wish do the same. We hope this helps. Finally, have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. I have the candy corn spirea, new this year and it’s my first spirea. It’s looking pale and dreary. Is it ok to prune it back at this time ? Im thinking it flowered at the nursery already so I’m not counting on any more flowers for the year. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you 😁
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Yes you can prune them (at almost any time of year). And, when the new growth develops, you can expect to get a new round of flowering too. Once established, spiraeas are fairly drought tolerant, but to get the best from them, it is good to water (deeply) during any prolonged summer dry periods and put down a layer of mulch too. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. I’ve read that spirea should be lightly pruned in spring and hard in fall. What do you recommend?
@OverdevestNurseries
@OverdevestNurseries 10 ай бұрын
They are so hardy and reliable that they can be pruned to different degrees at almost any time of year. That said, we know David has found out over the years that this method works best in this region (Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA) for the ones that flower from early summer onwards. Like he mentions near the start of the video just make sure that your plants are summer flowering and not spring flowering, because obviously, if you were to prune them in Fall or early spring, you would be cutting off flower buds ☹️ With these types, you wait until they finish flowering, and then that's when you would do the pruning! We hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about subscribing, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), it will turn up automatically in your feed. Finally, now that our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are continuing to bring in stocks of gorgeous plants, if you live in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region be sure to stop in and take a look…. Because that’s where you will discover all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections.

That's strange, normally they are very resilient and respond well to trimming. In fact, David adds that he's seen old tired plants (that needed rejuvenation), cut right back to ground level and still they came back well. So, there has to be another underlying reason why this is happening, we suggest applying good 2" deep layer of mulch and watering well druing any dry summer periods and maybe a light dressing of a well-balanced slow release fertilizer next spring. That should pull them around. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed.
