Same here bro! Two story house from the 1870s With a cabin from the late 1700s! It has a HUGE pear tree probably from the 1980s? It doesn't look super old to me. Good luck with your house and your pear tree!

Can you please show an updated video of your pear tree now?! I see all the pruning videos, but none that show what they look like once they are full! We just planted 2 evergreen pear trees in our front yard here in arizona. They are both growing straight up with not much lateral growth. I was told to wait until late fall to prune here due to the heat. Although, there are many crossing branches already!

Super video; I like the emphasis on understanding the nature of the tree and how it prefers to grow. Since I want to keep my young pear trees short, it was especially useful to learn the need to emphasize lateral growth. In the case of the above tree, however, I am left wondering what the gardener should do with the two main leaders in order to dwarf the tree. Would appreciate further tips.

This is a great help. Most videos tell how to prune the pear tree for a year or two but not what to do when it gets older and starts growing all these crazy vertical branches. I thought there was something wrong with my tree because I cut it right but it kept growing straight up,, but I see it is growing naturally, and I know what to do for it. Thanks!

Finally , a pruning video that makes sense and explains the growth pattern I am seeing. So, tired of hearing about making it goblet shaped like an apple tree. I knew allowing all that vertical growth and choking off the center to achieve the perfect goblet would not produce a healthy tree. Thanks for explaining

Some things I would do differently. I would either put a spacer between the two "main branches" or eliminate one of them because they are too close together. If i kept both branches I would prune any lateral branch to a bud facing away from the other branch so they grow away from each other. I know the drawbacks but I would not let any branch grow higher than I could reach so that I can spray them and hand pollinate and thin the fruit so I get huge fruit. I loved your video! It's interesting to see how people think differently than myself!

I keep all my 60+ trees at no higher than I can reach (except for my citrus and avocado which hold fruit for a months long harvest season). If you're wanting to produce a structure that keeps fruit within reach, why wouldn't you top off the tree to your desired height? I know it creates additional lateral growth, but isn't the alternative an inaccessible 18-30 foot tall tree? What do you suggest for the person who doesn't want a full size tree?

I have the same question, is it bad if i prune the top of my tree knowing that it will grow laterally and then cut of the laterals again? Its lind of a bit more work, but i think it would keep a tree at a desired height. What i dont know is if dong tis damages the tree in some way.
@TheBusyGardener
@TheBusyGardener 4 жыл бұрын
@@eltiobry3859 I know FOR SURE it doesn't damage the tree to keep the desired shape/size. You may sacrifice some fruit production, but if your aim is to keep a tree at a manageable size, prune away.

Smarter to keep within reach because if you don't when there is a disease or injury you will have a major job compared to a smaller one. Fruit trees require pruning all their life. Take for instance my japanese plum. I could let it go on its own but when I went outside today I can see where the branches need to be thinned out because the wind caused it to rub on each other. That is where disease can enter. I've seen old fruit trees where you can't reach the fruit so it all falls to the ground also creating a mess.

I'm quite surprised on the timing of the pruning of your tree. Today is Dec. 14, 2019. Did you do this earlier or did you do it recently? Isn't the tree going into hibernation per say. Please if you may explain how this was a good time to prune a fruit tree. Do you do Apple trees the same time. I'm very new to learning gardening. I watch all your vlogs new to channel and love the knowledge I'm learning. You have given me hope because I never had a green thumb. I'm finding growing things is very relaxing. I typically let trees just grow. The more leaves the more energy and the faster the overall growth. Once it is a mature tree I will trim it up to suit my needs but beyond that why slow its growth? I will Lolipop them once they reach around 8 feet tall by removing most of the lower branches.

Lisa, yes, you can still prune your pear trees. Pear is in the grouping of fruit trees that can be coppiced (cut all the way down near the ground) and still regrow. In fact, many pear farmers coppice their trees every 10-15 years for the health and longevity of the trees. Just make sure that if you're taking more than 25% of the branches off in one pruning session that you do it in the dead of winter when the tree is fully asleep. ~Candes

Me too. I would cut the taller of the two leaders . The one that pitch forks at the top . Cut it at its base and file off its attachment down hopefully so it wont grow back and cut the remaining leader at arm raised heights about 8 feet I got one pear that's out of sight tall tree. Single leader which I bent over mid summer to promote lateral branching on its top most side then in August and Sept a bud produced a straight up apical dominance leader 3/4 , in diameter and six feet tall than its 6 foot growing base . So I'm going to remove the original leader that I bent over and top the new leader to try to keep it at 8 or nine feet total length. What a mess . A Lowes moonglow 3ed year in the groun

You can plant fruit trees anytime, but winter is actually a good time because dormant trees are less sensitive than when they're "awake". This is especially true of bare-root trees which really have to be planed before they break dormancy.
