I have owned one of these for over 20 years and it’s now well over 8ft tall with three shoots off one stem. I had no idea I could just prune it back like that. It really, REALLY needs done but I’m terrified I’ll kill it. It was tiny when I first got it and I’ve had it longer than my kids! I guess I’ll just have to be brave and deal with it. I’m running out of room for it.

Did you do it? I have one that is probably 6 years old and I had no idea you could do this but I'm scared I will kill it.
@EmilysMum1981
@EmilysMum1981 5 жыл бұрын
pokermel I did! I was so nervous. I cut 10 “sticks” and so far, 6 have rooted and all have small shoots forming from their tops. The other 4 aren’t totally dead yet either but I may have kept them in the wrong place with not enough light. Given time they may yet live. I left one 6ft stem on the original plant just in case and for the first time in 20+ years it has begun to sprout another branch. The cutting must have encouraged it.

Lashonda Love so far so good. Most of my sticks have up to three bumps forming at the tops which are new shoots starting to grow. They’re in a mini greenhouse outside now but not in constant direct sunlight so they’re well lit and warm. I’m checking them all the time because I’m worried I’ll kill them and I’ve had that plant longer than I’ve had my children. Haha

@@lashondalove_ I checked mine today and the stick that was cut in half is now brown when it was green a few days ago. I hope that doesn't mean I killed it. 😭

Thank you for this video. I'm in Southern Michigan, USA. I have a dracaena that is getting overgrown, your video is the clearest that I found on how to prune it. I was very nervous about cutting it back but as soon as the weather warms up I'm going to permanent based on your suggestions. thank you.

Thanks so much for this video - very easy to follow. My Dracena plant has grown to over 5', with a bushy top, but about 5' of just trunk! I had a little shoot near the top. Because of your video, I'm not afraid to make several cuttings, and continue to enjoy the dracaena, which was a plant from my late Mom's. thanks again!!!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. One of four planted in the same pot got root rot, the obvious signs started with yellowing leaves but I thought it was possibly the close proximity to our gas-powered wall heater but then noticed only one of them were losing leaves and, the worst sign, very bottom of the stem closest to the soil is mushy. Was thinking I could just cut all the dead leaves then straight up chop halfway up the stem and check the others roots for rot. Thank you for encouraging my experiment!!!

I'm in my mid 20s and have a dozen house plants or so.. Great videos, thank you for the tips! Quick question for this one specifically: when (what season) should this be done during? Spring? Anytime? It's winter here now in Ontario (Canada), and my Draceana is potted, kept inside at temp of around 19-24 celcius. Side note if it changes anything, I will be buying a humidifier for my living room where most of my plants are. I've had it for over 5 years, and have been "looping" the stem/cane as it grows, which was interesting, but I now want to propagate it & have the original re-start from the getgo. Thank you for your time. Sincerely

When do you start watering them once planted the cuttings? I am assuming they'd need to be in shade until they show new growth? I usually use soft wood rooting hormone gel for succulents so would I be using hard wood one for Draceanas? Thanks in advance.

I just topped my 40 year old one. My mum got it for an engagement present. I hope the top survives! Then it will be able to continue continuously growing taller. It's pretty terrifying cutting something that is so old and has sentimental value. It feels like it's part of the family. The top had a lot of leaves. It probably has about 500mm of stem with leaves and I left about 300 mm below the leaves. What's the likelihood it'll survive? They sound pretty hardy

Hi, awesome video! Know any good ways to promote (buds/spikes) growth after cutting?? My 4.5 ft tall plant grew straight up for 2 years, cut it back few weeks ago... the top half seems to be happy; leaves are doing ok. But the mother plant/ bottom half hasn't produced any little buds yet nearing a month later, and the roots are huge! Im afraid it's dying cause of shock... I repotted it to a a larger pot as well the same day. Lmk what you think? Thanks-
@thisistheendpt2
@thisistheendpt2 4 жыл бұрын
Cutting the trunk won't shock the plant. Buds will appear in time as long as the conditions are right. Keep it out of the cold. It will only go into shock if you divide the root system or cut roots.

I've been wondering what to do with our sad looking Dracaena plant. It was the first house plant that we bought and we've had it for a long time but it's terrible leggy now. I know now to turn the pots regularly to avoid it growing too much in one direction but I found this out a bit too late for this one. I was worried it was going to have to be put out to pasture but looks like I will wait until spring and then give this a go.

Hello Regina, I'm so happy to come across your video. I recently had a tree branch fall on my Dracaena and split it in half. Thanks to your video, I will cut the three fallen branches down to size and replant them. I do have a few questions though. (1). Where the tree branch hit, it tore a bit of the bark on the main trunk that the three branches were on. I strapped it back in place using some small rubber hose with a zip tie through it to hold it together. Will doing this work to heal the main stem/trunk or should I cut it all down and start over. The plant still looks nice, even with the missing branches. (2). I live in Orlando, Florida, USA. We are coming up on the 2022 Fall/Winter season. Will this have any effect on the new growth taking root? It is obviously an outside plant in a big heavy pot and hard to move. I can do the new shoots inside in smaller pots and repot them outside in the spring. We rarely see weather below freezing. (0 Celsius) Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks for posting.
