This video shows you how to correctly pull a horse's mane. Pulling a horse’s mane is the process of removing hair from a horse’s mane from the root. This is done to thin and shorten the mane, making the horse look more professional, and making it easier to braid the horse’s mane.

to anyone watching, you should use thinning shears instead. horses do indeed have feeling in their manes, and plucking the hairs out like this hurts (i know it hurts me!). thinning shears work faster and are painless :)

I have heard of this before but have never seen how to do it. I don't know anyone who does it, simply out of concern about hurting the horse. Honestly, I'm not sure what's supposed to be attractive about a thinned out mane look. I find it makes the horse look older and it never looks natural. I think a thick, flowy mane is very attractive!

It’s usually because horse shows require a tidy mane, but some people really do like having their horse’s mane nice and straight and thinned out because it makes them look more professional and clean!

@@bunnykinz some people use scissors anyways, but usually the scissors make the mane stick up and get kinda fluffy (I’m actually not sure why) but at my barn we occasionally use scissors to trim the mane a little bit, but we don’t do it for full on cuts

@@lm_equestrian6522 you can use scissors to cut the mane , but yes, the hair will sometimes floof up if its short because of the new growth coming in from the underside of the mane
@PurplePoppyAnimator
@PurplePoppyAnimator 2 жыл бұрын
@@bunnykinz Scissors are a really bad idea, especially cutting straight across! It gives it a really chunky unclean look, pulling the longest hairs behind is the best way of having the mane look short but fading out naturally, you can top up with the scissors afterwards cutting upwards from an angle afterwards if needed but often it's not! It nearly always doesn't hurt the horse, a horse turned out with a wild mane is going to be getting it caught on stuff anyways, although SOME horses are very sensitive to mane pulling, we have one or two on our yard of 36 that have very tough hairs to pull out so we use alternatives, but for the most part if done properly they never have issue, never pull big chunks out at once anyways! Harder to pull for you, horse doesn't like the sensation and you risk "breaking" the hairs instead of pulling it from the root, which is super bad and gives weird sticking up hairs, As you go on and tidy up the mane more and more you pull thinner and thinner strands until you don't even need a comb, you just "nip" the hairs tips off quickly with your two fingers pinched! Short pulled manes are pretty much mandatory for most English riders, especially if competing, you need to have a neat, straight pulled mane in order to plait and make rosebuds effectively. Natural Manes are either a casual thing or more of a Western Aesthetic :)

Show horses need to have a short even tody mane... especially in breed shows... for these types of horses you can not just cut the mane. The hair will not lay correctly. If the horse is being shown in western events like pleasure, equitation, trail, horsemanship or showmanship... the mane needs to be banded. In order to accomplish the appropriate look the mane needs to be pulled.. I dont ride english so I can't say the same for that. My mare would not let me do anything to her that hurts. And I have pulled her mane without incident. It works for me and my mare in prepping for a show.

And people think it's cruel and say all horses don't like it when it really depends on the horse. Just because they witnessed like, twenty horses, tossing their heads during mane pulling, doesn't mean all of them do.

So thinning a horse's mane makes it more presentable? Wow, where? I thought having a beautiful thick long mane was regarded a horse's beauty. And why pull it? Why not just cut it short and call it a day? I have never in my life seen a more ridiculous thing to do to an animal to make it more "presentable".
