OK, but would it not serve the eradication purpose better to get rid of the berries and then shovel it out? (I collect them by breaking them with the branch because I spend the winter months collecting and yanking out the new ones from dropped berries.)

Sure. You can do it that way. I did go back and collect all the fruits from those ones after the video. Foliar spraying fields of seedlings is easier than collecting fruits, but you may have to wait a couple years to do that.

What herbicides do you recommend that’s more affordable? I have it on 10 acres but I’m working to eradicate it from 1 acre that’s being used as a small pasture for cattle. I’ve ripped most up manually or with a shovel with consideration of the berries. Regardless of how physically demanding (it’ll count as my daily workout) would Berry removal AND physical removal control it or is herbicide absolutely necessary? Planning to replace a lot of the area with grass and legumes after it’s removed/pulled up. I’m not trying to spend $100+ on Garlon. Anything more cost effective for 1 acre? Thanks!

My preference is Triclopyr amine, like Garlon 3a, at about 4% of the concentrate, with 1oz/gal of Dyne-amic surfactant, plus about 4oz of dye per 3 gal backpack, so I can see where I sprayed. Mix well and coat the plants thoroughly. Try to be careful of special plants that might also be in the area, like Matelea, Aristolochea, Erythrina, etc.

@@UFDionysus thanks for the reply. Is manual removal futile? Or if I were to pull them ALL up would I see success?

@@capsaiyan It depends on the scale of your problem and how much time you have, and if your back and knees can handle the stress. Keep in mind that however many you think there are, multiply that by 200 and you'll be a lot closer.

Triclopyr, brand-name is Garlon. There are various formulations for different uses. The ester form is good for penetrating, sometimes used with an oil carrier to penetrate bark, but it can also be used with water to penetrate waxy leaves. The triclopyr amine needs a methylated seed oil adjuvant to help it penetrate waxy Ardisia leaves. The amine is normally used at a 4% of concentrate and the ester at 2%, in water for foliar spraying Ardisia. The ester form evaporates more readily, especially in warm weather, and can harm canopy trees that way. It's considered safe to use in cold weather.
