Grammy never pumped gas. She made me do it as far back as I could remember. She claimed she didn’t know how to do it. Classy.

I can remember growing up my dad would only get gas at the station on the highway a mile or so from our place, it was the other direction of our turn off from town so it would take a little extra time, but my dad wouldn't support any other station except that one. Every time he went the owner or his son would greet my dad and I, ask us how our days been and as the pump was filling he would check the oil in dads truck and clean the windows off if they needed it, if they weren't bad he would leave them. This was early 2000s and I can't count how many times he would give my dad 5 dollars off when he paid cash, dad always felt bad for taking it but he knew they wouldn't let him leave it. I found out growing up my dad and the owner and his son go way back like Cadillac seats. Showed me at a young age what a form of loyalty was. Up until they closed the gas station after the owner died and his son took over dad would always drive the extra mile to go to them.

There was also a chrome crank on the side that you had to turn in order to clear the previous sale.

late 70's and I was a pump jockey for a while at the local Aussie Caltex and it was good fun and hard work but what I learned stays with me to this day from tyre repairs with an old Strongarm manual changer and bubble balancer to the quirks of all the different cars.

One of my first jobs in the 1970's was a SERVICE Station attendent in a small coastal tourist town. A Professional Petroleum Transfer Technician. We had a saying back in the day, "The shorter the skirt, the cleaner the windshield"

Rob I use to work in a full service Gulf station back in 1982/83. And yes we did check the oil, wash the windshield as well as put air in the tires, and would even add oil to the transmission and power steering if the car or truck had an automatic tranny and power steering. If not we checked their brake fluid, and washer fluid. However lead was never added to gasoline for the reason you stated! It was added to boost octane and to prevent engine knock, also known as pre-ignition of gasoline. Which had the added benefit of preventing engine damage, caused by pre-ignition of gasoline in the combustion chamber.

Sounds a lot better than New Jersey after driving miles hopping out of the van, not realizing that I am not allowed to pump my own gas and getting yelled at for it. Didn't check anything, didn't have window wash available for me to do the windshield and being threatened a ticket for using the pump so far and that the attendant is the only one allowed to touch the pump

I’m 47… and part of the last of the breed. I was that full serve guy for a while. I’ve always said if I won the Powerball, I’d build a golden era full serve service station. It probably wouldn’t ever make money, but it’d be cool as hell and a great service!

I worked at a full service gas station in the mid to late 90s when i was in highschool and starting college. We did all of this. While we didn't have maps, we did give directions if asked and someone working knew the answer.

Actually I get that service everytime I go to the gas station! I live in Baja Mexico, just 15 minutes from the San Diego Ca. border...my friends and family are extremely surprised when they come and visit and go top off their tanks and notice that the attendants approach them courteously and check their fluids, clean their windshield, check and fill their tire pressure and basically everything a car needs...out here only the gas station attendants can fill one's tank,we're blessed in that way at least!!

damn Rob..Thanks for bringing back some good memories. Back in the 70's my dad worked at the Shell about a block from our house. From the time I was 9 to about 13 I would work there in the summer. I would pump the gas, add oil, add air, even changed wiper blades. While I was doing that dad and the other mechanics would be working on cars in the 3 bays. Some of the best summers of my life. Sadly that station was sold/torn down in the late 90's. Its just a parking lot now for the medical building across the street. back then gas was like $0.35/gallon. The good ole days.

I am 79 , cheapest gas I remember was 18 cents p/gal. Shady gas station's would "short stick" the dip stick , tell you you need a qt of oil but you really didn't. Then take a used can of oil, push the filler in the bottom to make it look like it was a new can, hold a rag over the previous hole and sell you a qt of oil that they did not really put in. A friend had a Whizzer motor bike, we would find a glass bottle, cash it in for 2 cents, go get 2 cents of gas and ride all day, free.

They should bring this kind of service back, considering it could prevent a lot of accidents from poor car maintenance. Then again I'm surprised it's not implemented in electric cars, at charging stations as something for the driver to do whilst waiting for their car to charge.

Cool pump! We own a gas station/3 bay shop up in pa. Was flying A when my grandpa started. He bought it from Getty oil in 72. My dad owns it now but my grandpa is there every day but Sunday. We pump the gas wash the windows, add air etc. It’s all i know since a little kid but when you stop and think about having 3 generations there it’s pretty damn cool 🇺🇸 he brought in an album the other day of pics from 70/80/90/2000s neat to see

There was a Sunoco station near my grandpa's company that was full service until about 1988. By then they didn't do everything, but I remember going there with parents in the late 70s and they'd check the oil and clean the windows and check the tire pressure.

My parents had a full service station back in the early 70s. I was a attendant at it. You would meet some of the nicest people. If you took good care of your customers it created customer loyalty and they would come back. You had to learn how to count change back to the customers rather than just handing it back like today. I was 11 at the time and sometimes my parents would go home take a break and I would run the station by myself. I couldn't even imagine leaving a kid alone at that age today. The tire machine was a manual one had to use a handel extender to get enough leverage to break the bead on the tire. Life was alot simpler for sure. Man oh man Rabbit you sure stirred some memories in a gas ⛽️ pump.

I worked at the last gas station in my home town (late 80's) with full service pumps. Full service HAD changed by then though. By then we only checked oil if asked. By the time the 90's finished the station existed but there was no more 'full service'. I think there was one or more of the states in the country that didn't allow self service gas stations but I don't remember when or if that ever changed.

I think a lot of it has to do with the gas station paying for the cutesy and labor. Most barely keep themselves running now selling products in store. The money from the gas goes directly to the oil company so they aren't making a dime off the gas you buy. Which reminds me, you should always try to buy something at a gas station even if it's $1, it helps them out a lot.

That is unless you live in New Jersey or Oregon, where it is much to dangerous to pump your own gas and less than happy workers do it. I muss say they didn't check the tires, oil, or wash the windshield. I am glad I live in the one of the other 48 states where I can do it myself! 😁
