Let's take a moment to appreciate that he recorded the video very early in the morning, when fewer people would be at the gas station and there's a better chance he wouldn't hold up the pump while making the video. Very thoughtful and considerate. Some points that are probably worth noting to a rookie gas pumper: - avoid letting your car's gas tank level get below one-quarter full. You'll risk damaging the fuel pump, fuel filter, and maybe the engine itself if you run low or out of gas. - the diesel pump filler nozzles are usually a different design than the standard gasoline nozzles. You shouldn't be able to fit a diesel nozzle into a regular gas fuel filler opening. This, plus the green color he mentioned, are by design to help avoid putting diesel gas into your standard gas vehicle. - never leave your engine running while filling the gas tank. - if you get back into your vehicle while the gas is being pumped, always touch a metal surface (car roof or door, for example) before touching the gas pump again. This helps to discharge static electricity which may have formed when you re-entered the car.

I get so close to crying every time I watch one of your videos. I needed this when I was younger and I need this now. Been driving 14 years and I always hand squeeze at the pump because I wasn't taught there was a lever or how to hold it in place. By the time I realized there was, I was too embarrassed to even ask about it! This just gave me the confidence to try putting the lever in place for the first time. Thank you!

Another tip is that when you unscrew the gas cap it fits perfect on the little door that covers it up. It help from keeping it hanging or if you don’t have the plastic strap still to it.

I remember the first time I had to pump gas, I was literally terrified. My parents didn't believe that this was something that had to be taught, they just told me to go do it... I still get some anxiety doing it now. Just so much I could do wrong and then there are lines and people watching making in more difficult lol

I was one of those people, Dad! My husband actually showed me that last year. I've been driving since I was 16, but legally since I was 23 and I was told this at 50!! This was a great explanation. In my country (Brazil), we have people working at the gas stations who fill up our tanks. It's not possible to just do it yourself. The first time I travelled to the USA I rented a car and was quite puzzled as to what to do. I'm sure everyone was judging me, since I was on my twenties, and seemed clueless. I did learn eventually, but every time I travel, I still get a little nervous when I have to do this.

My dad passed away January 25, 1997. I was only 26 years old. He taught me everything he could, but I needed him for so much longer. Having your channel is an absolute game changer. I am 42 years old myself, and I happened to come across your videos. I love them! I know these were probably initially made for young people who don't know how to do a lot of things, but for my personal story here .... I grew up in a household and environment where my father didn't do anything with us. He didn't spend any time with us, didn't teach us anything. I was never taught how to cook, how to manage bills or money. To this day, I still don't know how to change the oil in a car. I don't know how to change a doorknob either (I saw that video of yours, so I will definitely have to check it out). I have grown up not knowing a lot of stuff. I don't know how to work on cars. My brother does. My brother can tear down an engine to get to the problem, figure it out, fix it, and put everything back together again with no issues. That shocks me. But yeah. Thank you so much for all you do for everyone in here. I am proof that these videos aren't just for youth. It's also for people who don't know how to do a lot of it themselves.

Yeah, definitely twist the cap until it clicks. Mine twists really hard when closing it so I was always worried it was going to break and would just snug it. However, with all the emissions controls on cars these days, I would get a lot of check engine lights from it. And, another tip. If you're check engine light comes on, always try tightening the gas cap first and drive it through about 5 key cycles to see if it goes off. Gas caps are super sensitive these days.

A few tips when getting gas if you carry a purse: Just get out your cash or credit card, then LOCK YOUR CAR while filling up. Someone could easily open the passenger side door when you are distracted and grab your purse. Also, on my car, the flap over the gas cap does not open if the car is locked, so I have to open that flap when I step out of my car, and then I quickly lock my car. After I put my gas cap back on, the flap will not close all the way until I am back in my car and lock the doors and then it clicks closed by itself. Every car probably has different quirks like this. By the way, I just learned how to lock the trigger on the gas pump in place a few years ago. My ENTIRE life I stood there and squeezed the trigger as my tank filled. And I am 60! 🤪 Anyway, Dad, I appreciate you, because I lost my Dad 35 years ago, and I miss him, but you and your good advice and dad jokes are good therapy. ❤

So ... my mother came up here for a funeral about 10 yrs ago , without my father. We had a car for her to use while here but it needed gas. She said we'll you'll have to come with me I don't know how to pump gas. I said ..huh? How do you get that old and not know? Well, my father always did it. He was old school and I just never imagined someone could go through life and not know this. So very helpful for all ages! We got gas for 4.09 yesterday, but it was at one of the gas stations, you may not live thru getting it. Lol our town is super scary now. Also you don't want to use card at pump. I have never watched the videos of this channel. But I read about this channel a year ago. I just cried at that time. I grew up without a father. I always thought it wouldn't be a problem for me. But it wasn't like that. When I first read about this channel, I realized how lonely I was. I was very smart as a child and I learned things very easily. But in those moments, I didn't have a father to teach me. My reason for writing this today. I want to say thank you to Mr. Kenney for being a Dad to thousands of young men like me.

Thanks, Dad! This will be so helpful to so many people. When I saw the topic, I have to admit my first thought was, "Who doesn't know how to pump their own gas?" But out of curiosity, I watched the video and all my memories of getting confused by the process when I first got my driver's license came flooding back. I'm 62 now, so it's been a long time since then. And, of course, there have been so many changes in the process over the years, too, like the technology at the pumps that allows people to pay there, instead of in the gas station store. I've even stuck my credit card in the wrong slot on pumps with more than one for different purposes, and once pressed the button for 89 octane instead of 87 because of an unusual pump that had reversed buttons, so this reminded me to "read the pump." Also, I only learned a couple of years ago about the little arrow on cars' dashboard gas gauges that shows what side the gauge is on. That's actually very useful for me, even though I've had the same car for 16 years, because sometimes I forget. It's also helpful for a rental car, if I didn't pay attention to that before I started driving it. In addition, I've met some women whose husbands always did the driving and the gas filling, etc., and then they become widowed and find it so stressful to have to drive themselves now and put gas in the tank, get oil changes, etc., so your gentle video could be so helpful to them. So glad to have you as my dad!

I've been driving for over 20 years and never learned how to pump gas / petrol. I live in a region where they have attendants. This is a lot more useful than you might think!

I even learned something that here in the uk its the opposite green is for regular unleaded and black is for diesel. Was a fun watch to see how different a simple thing is in different parts of the world

Thanks for the video! The details are bit different here in Europe, but the general idea is the same. And let's not even start about the price, your gas is CHEAP!! I was never taught this, my dad never mentioned this when I learned to drive. The first time I had to pump gas was with the company van (I couldn't even FIND the filler cap at first), using a company credit card which had me terrified I would do something wrong! 6 years on, and I'm still always triple checking whether I'm getting the right fuel, never want to make that mistake... Charging an electric car for the first time, was again such a new experience that no-one thought needed explaining (in the end, it didn't, but still, nerve wracking for some people the first time)

I appreciate that you made this video. I'm 45 and at this point I know how to pump gas. It actually throws me off if I go into a station with full service 😂 But, when I took driver's Ed in high school I asked "how do you know when the gas tank is full?" and my instructor looked at me like I was an idiot and never actually answered my question. I went home upset and my mom calmly took me to the gas station and taught me how to pump gas. I still have trouble getting the handle to click so it pumps automatically but I can get the job done. Thank you for your patient videos never making us feel like idiots if we don't know something that seems common sense.

Hello kind sir. You said not to top your tank off when it clicks into the position when it hits full. This is absolutely correct. I'm a technician and I cannot count on my hand how many times we have ran into this with people "topping" their tanks off. What happens is when you fill it to far it can cause fuel to enter your evap canister and damage the filter inside of it. The canister is part of the emissions system on your vehicle. Also anyone who does not know what fuel their car takes, read your owners manual or look inside the gas door it will tell you the vehicles minimum recommended octane rating there.

You explained it very well. When a person comes from a country where the gas is filled by the pump helper one does not know how to fill the gas. I know people living in US will say “ it is very easy” . The new comer is always anxious when they have to fill gas. It is something one has to learn when you start driving a car. Moreover , in UK , the car steering wheel is on the right side and in US on the left. Driving the other way around also causes anxiety for the driver. Thanks for you video . Lol, I remember when I first got my licence, I got so nervous come fuel time cos didn't know how to use the fuel pumps, I literally looked it up online cos I had no idea. On my learners, my father would always fill up the vehicle and send me in to the servo to pay, I never got to try it myself cos I suppose its one of those easy tasks you do all the time and he thought I'd just know. Extra tips about cars and refueling : it doesn't always have the "fuel door" but the arrow is always there mostly to the side of the gas pump or the next to the F or E not all cars have a latch or a lever to open the gas cover you need to unlock your car using the lock button on the inside to unlock it or the key to unlock it , most cars get locked automatically after getting to a certain speed when driving if its off press and hold the lock button inside the car it should activate . if the fuel cap is not attached with something there is most likely a thing on the inside of the cover where you can hang it or put it . also he didn't explain why you would like to keep your tank filled up even he had half a tank , when your tank is half full or empty there is more air for fuel to evaporate with the heat it's even worse in the summer so you save gas like that !

Don’t forget to make note of which pump you’re at if you need to go inside!! It’s the number you see posted near the pump. Normally the people inside will know, but when it’s busy you’ll have to tell them. If you’re somewhere and need help there is usually a help button too!! Had to do that once when one had a locking lever I had never seen. It was so awkward but hilarious. You got this, kids! 😄

I helped someone who could not start their vehicle after refueling. They had left the vehicle in Drive mode. If this happens to you, simply put the vehicle into Park and then start the vehicle.

You want to stop pumping as soon as the handle trips and stops itself. Unless you know for sure that it stopped prematurely. You don’t want your gas tank as full as possible. You want it to be as full as the pump handle will let it be before tripping. If you try to put more in once it’s full it’s possible for liquid gasoline to enter the vehicles charcoal canister, where only fuel vapors are supposed to enter. It’s possible to damage it this way over time. I assume that’s what your mechanic was taking about. Great video as always but I just wanted to add some details to your explanation.

From a story that was shared with me... You don't have to fill the tank every time you get gas. If you can only afford to put $10 worth of gas in to get you through a few days, then you can do that. You can manually stop the nozzle by squeezing it again to release the hold lever to stop it close to where you want, or you can pay the cashier in advance by telling them you want "$10 on pump 2" for example, go back and start pumping and it will stop when it hits that amount. Oh also if you pay the cashier in advance to fill up but it doesn't take as much as you thought, you can go back inside and ask the cashier for the change from your pump.
