Chris Ryan shows you what can be done at set up and during the swing to ensure you perform better on the golf course with your long irons.
These clubs are notoriously hard to use, but with a few good concepts you can ensure that you rip your long irons on your way to lower scores.

After watching many golf lesson videos, Chris’s videos are, hands down, the best. Clear logic as to why something works (or doesn’t) nicely sets up the demonstration.

That’s exactly what I struggle with. Love the detailed explanation you give. I learn so much from your videos. The problem is taking it all at once to the course. I better make myself a plan; what can I do better with my driving, long irons, mid irons, short irons, chipping, pitching and putting and focus on these parts individual and let it come together at the end. What are your thoughts about that?

When I did do my good long iron shots was when kinda treated it like a driver a little hip forward thing going on. But mostly hit like crap with 3 or 4 iron compared to my trustee 5 that can belt way further than 3,4 bout 150 to 180m. Good tips there 👍

Seems fair. I pure my hybrid/7wood right down the middle every time from anywhere between 215-180 depending on how hard i swing. I think ill just vary my swing speed with that and take my outcome instead of hitting a 3-5 iron that I usually chunk/line/shank 70% of the time. I think its just pride that keeps me going back to the long irons lol.

Nice 2 iron shot there! btw Returning the club shaft at the same angle to the ball at address or even slightly under it, works for me.. also most instructors position the ball off "left arm or left heel".. but like Jack said the head position is critical, i like to feel like my left eye is situated right behind the ball at address, which keeps my head there to see the point of impact, the shaft angle and gives me time to deliver the longer iron arch/ tempo and get better feedback

Been practicing this at the indoor range (waiting for the snow to go away) and I've been using my full backswing to get that club head speed and OMG what a difference. The 4 iron actually does make the ball go quite high and far. Been scared to use my full backswing because it's not consistent, but with practice, I'm getting more confident. This is by far the most useful golf video I've seen. And I've watched a ton of them. Oh, this video also helps with my hybrid and 3W.

To me here from the front angle, it doesn't look like you have much forward shaft lean at set up before starting your swing with the 2 iron. I see golfers have much more forward lean to begin with the shorter irons e.g. 8 iron. Am I seeing this right? Is this to promote more solid contact with a club with less loft, and to hit up slightly with the longer irons? Great video though Chris thanks for the advice

I’m able to hit my 8-W clubs very well but for some reason cannot hit my 4-7 irons with any type of consistency. I know, at impact, that my handle is not forward and should be. I also know that I’m contacting the ground before the ball because of this. Would this be the answer to my issues with my longer irons? Your videos are very helpful and I’ve already started improving over just a few practice sessions! Thanks

Sooo...what I really lack is Speed in the club. So here is my question - from where comes the main force? And I also wonder how much force comes from the trail arm. I always been of the impression that the trail arm should be more passive than the lead arm. You seem to get the main force from the trail arm. Yes, I understand that the body generates the power but how much is canalised through the trail arm? Thnx for great vids !

@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Juan, thanks for watching, playing the ball further back in the stance with a long iron will produce a lower launch and lower flight. This is an option provided the golfer has sufficient club speed to get the ball to rise in its flight, many golfers who have club speeds in around the 80mph mark will find this shot loses too much distance. So really it all depends on speed, hope that helps 👍👍

I play parkland course with lots of trees. I've found low shot with hybrid by putting ball back in stance, hands/shaft forward, then swing arms to parallel with stiff wrists. Can get the ball a decent distance with this technique. Mind you my hybrid is 19 deg so prob a bit stronger loft than 5 iron replacement. Hope this helps/works.

Hi Dave, I’d certainly look to switch out the 5 iron if you are struggling with it. A hybrid equivalent will be a little more tricky to flight low, but still possible but setting it back in the stance and making a few swing tweaks 👍

Is this true? Is it the case that you need to have decent swing speed in the first place to be able to use the long irons? Is that why so many high handicappers use hybrids instead because they are more forgiving? Forgive my ignorance, I genuinely don't know!

the club is longer so swinging those clubs consistently faster than all of your other clubs is the best way to control distance. Thats why you will see many people with slower swing speeds hit shorter irons from the rough because they cant generate the speed especially through the rough
