How to deal with an aggressive rooster. If you have raised your own chickens than I am sure you have come across at least one aggressive rooster! We have had 6 roosters this year and 2 of them have been aggressive, one more than the other. The rooster in this video is one of our spring chicks that we had raised that has developed an aggressive side. Our main rooster, "Jimmy" (aka the father), had bouts of aggression and using this tactic to deal with an aggressive rooster has really helped over the years keep our aggressive roosters in line. It does not hurt them in anyway and we have had good results using this technique. We hope this video helps.

i used to do that with my rooster "willy" to calm him down...but what surprised me at all was he was able to recognize his name....anytime i called "willy" he turned his head where the voice came from and run toward me very happy..

Likewise, last year we found a baby chick, it was about three weeks old, so I named him Pumpkin. If I call him he'll look up and look for me, comes running most times. He's my buddy, can be a little feisty but nothing serious, mostly wing dances, peck your shoes. but will give me the spurs. Eighteen months later I have 23 chickens, four roosters including my Buddy. LOL

Same for mine. I also know his inability to eat snacks because he wants all his hens to have them. So we have this thing where u create a distraction with all the hens and snacks and call Scooby to be and he will finally be able to peacefully eat some snacks out of my hands. It’s pretty admirable how much resentment they have to eating to ensure the hens get what they need to be happy.

Named my Bearded Crested Golden Laced Polish Rooster Rambo & man he has really earned his name lol he will fight to protect all the ladies ❤ what’s really cool though you can walk out into the yard and holler his name and he comes running and so do all the hens. I often carry several pieces of sliced bread with me and have them all jumping for it some now shoulder height, just for a bite of bread lol. The hens finally taught Rambo it was ok for him to join & now he’s doing it too it’s quite awesome

Normally at home, whenever we had an aggressive rooster especially if he attacked one of the kids, he would happily end up on the grill.

We have a hen who is disable, we want to give her all the care we can as she's a fighter, but one of our roosters in particular attacked her mercilessly whenever he could. She hid between two crates we had under their coop until we put a large cage into their yard. Now she lives in the cage with her own food and water, no longer has to hide or fear, she's safe and has all the space she needs.

Aww, that's so sad. Yes sometimes chickens can be nasty to another that is injured or weaker than the rest. Glad she is ok now though.

Thanks for your video. My Roo was raised from a baby. He is a very good protector. But now he stalks me and it’s hard to take care of the coops and girls. I’ve tried another technique and seems to work for a day or two. But then he’s back at it. I stand my ground and the wars on. I’ll try this and see what happens. After a fight the other day I crabbed him up, tucked his head under his wing and walked around with him for a few minutes. I hate to get rid of him for the hens sake, he fights the hawks off but can’t take him much longer for sure. I’ve thought about doing this everyday for awhile. Go to him, capture him, carry him around for a bit, everyday first thing and see if that works. Show him who’s boss!! Idk 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

This is a great video! We have a rooster that isn’t too aggressive but is to my 5 year old! Not sure why that is but I don’t think us doing this would help her so we’ve been letting her bring the treats out a lot to hopefully associate her as a Positive! Loved the video will stick around for more! We love making videos about our chickens as well!

I have a very small Serama Rooster, he’s almost 2 years old. He used to be very sweet but for the past 4 months he’s been very mean to me and any human that walks near him or the hens. Recently I didn’t have time to put on my boots so I went to the run in slippers to change waters and before I knew it he came at my foot and pecked me so hard that I bled for a while. This time he really scared me. Usually I have on boots and he can’t hurt me and now he jumps high and pecks my leg. I know I won’t eat him because I still love him but I will be giving him away soon. Yesterday I hit him with a stick to stop him from chasing me…this tells me for sure it’s time to get rid of him. Thank you for sharing this post but I think he’s done taken all my patients to even try holding him down and rubbing him lol. But either way I’m loving your content and you have a knew subscriber 😊

Oh wow! Thank you Paula Lee! 🥰 I'm so glad you are sticking around. I hear you with the aggressive roosters. There is a time that if things are not working out, and he doesn't become submissive you do need to do something. It is no fun to be afraid to go outside. We have found that the breed of chickens can really help determine the personality of the rooster, but there is always the exception to the rule. I'm so sorry to hear about your foot. 😢 it's hard when we fall in love with these little guys, but it's quickly forgotten on a peck like that. Thanks for watching. And welcome to the family 😊

These random rooster started inhabiting my yard, then one just recently started attacking me for NO REASON . I seen the title of this and I just HAD to see this. If all else fails I will come across him with a pole. S/n : Just found out today when they see you as a threat!, they will call out to the other rosters! It felt like the children of the corn!

Oh my. Wow. you had just random roosters? Yes roosters can be very unpleasant to say the least. For the most part we have found that specific breeds are more docile and tend to try to stick to those. But I feel you, some roosters are down right nasty 😂

I really hope this works. My super sweet rooster who we rescued because he an orphan as a chickling has become so aggressive, I can’t go in the pen. In front of the other hens I made the mistake of being aggressive back thinking I could establish dominance but it just upset the flock. Thanks for your video.

He's unfortunately charged me 2 more times, but he's learning and becoming more relaxed when I hold him. We're coming out of a snowy winter, so I'm hoping that once the snow melts and that he can free-roam again, he'll start to settle down.

I have my first little flock of hens, 2 buff orpington and 2 barred rock. I rescued a rooster from the side of the road, assume he was dumped, or maybe flew the coop and got lost. He is a beautiful boy, I think he is an Easter Egger, just looking at pictures. I kept him in a separate space for a few weeks, but close to the hens. Then when I let him be with them he was very sweet with no problems. I have to make him sleep in the garage because I can't let him crow first thing in the morning and wake up my neighbors. I live in a small town where hens are allowed, but not roosters. Every night when the girls go to bed I open the door of the run and he walks over to his crate and just gets in it all by himself. Then in the morning at about 7 he gets to come out. No complaints from the neighbors and I give them eggs, so all is well. He did not try to mount the girls at all for the first few weeks, but now he does and they are OK with it, he is nice about it. So all this is great and I love having them and the eggs I get to share with my friends. My big question is: Do all roosters have spurs? He doesn't. Will he grow them? I can see the little nub where the spurs would grow, but the nub is not larger than it was when I got him. I have no idea how old he is. I dread the day when he may grow to his maturity or maybe his personality will change and he might grow spurs and turn aggressive. What is your experience with that? I really like him and so do the girls, so I don't mean to borrow trouble, but am new to this and would like your response. Thank you! His name is Ricky.

In my experience the spurs didn't make a difference. Yes all rooster have spurs and they grow as they get older. Perhaps someone removed his spurs?🤷🏻‍♀️ but they got back anyways. It's great that he is good with the hens. It's unfortunate you can't have roosters where you are. We find that a rooster is a great additions to hens, and and really make the flock happier. We love our buff Orpingtons and barred rocks. Perhaps you can incubate some eggs while you have your rooster around. ☺️. We have raised many roosters and have only hand maybe 3-4 that have had aggressive behaviours. Most of the time they are aggressive when they start to crow. So far, from what you are saying he sounds like a good rooster. People get rid of roosters for so many reasons, mostly cause they don't want more then one. I hope the best for you and Ricky and it works out. Thanks for sharing your story. And hope you are enjoying your hens, they can be a lot of fun.

Wow your rooster sounds so lovely! Mine on the other hand is the devil.. I don’t live with my mom but I visit often and every time I go by him he tries to attack me it’s only him too the other one is chill so I dont know what’s the problem I really want to learn how to tame/dominate him because my moms husband is trying to kill/sell to be killed but I’m unsure how. I’m gonna try to do what you did but I’m kind of a sissy 😂

Very well handled. Unfortunately we have a rooster that has it out for us. I've pinned him multiple times as you've shown here. That works for a couple of days He's a liability. So he's being rehomed to be with roosters. He'll Figure out his place real quick.

Sometimes you do have to remove the rooster, sometimes they are stubborn and are just too aggressive. Sorry to hear you have to rehome him. What breed is he?

I've done that, but sometimes you get a rooster that just has it out for you. I had one that stalked the grandchildren and would walk behind me. One day I turned around my chicken run, which is arched cattle panels, and I lost my equilibrium. I fell into the panel. The moment I hit the ground Opie came spurring at me. I knocked him away but my inner ear wasn't letting me get my balance and he came at me again. I deflected again but the next time, he stuck a spur in my palm. I grabbed on and treated him like Hulk treated Loki in Avengers. Unlike loki, he didn't get up from the "puny god" treatment. I was upset. He was pretty and I was working with him but to no avail. I went in and told my wife. Se told my grandkids and two of them yelled "Hurray!" They're really been concerned about him. I have a couple Hens that are persnikity now, but the three roos I have keep their distance or when they come up for treats, show respect. None of them care about the kids, they just keep an eye on the girls. Like they should.

Wow. Sorry to hear. Yes sometimes this just isn't enough. I really think breeds play a major part in the character of the roo. We have had to put a few in the freezer. There's nothing like being chased or attacked by a rooster. I like the roosters that just tend to their ladies and keep there distance. How is your palm?

My mom’s rooster just killed all 14 of our chicks because her husband said it would be okay to just put them together, we now sadly know that’s not right. I’m trying to do research now because one of the roosters is extremely aggressive but kicking him off isn’t working (we think he’s the one who killed them). Thank you for your video!! Oh that's so sad. So we have found that if you incubate your eggs and put them in it's not safe, but if a broody hen hatches her own chicks out she will protect them and we haven't had our roosters kill chicks due to the aggressive mother hens lol

That is a good technique and it will work, but there is one problem: by using this strategy, you will remain in the pecking order forever. One day your roos may come back and attack you. Even if you pin them down again, this puts the rooster in a place of constantly fighting you to be the top rooster, even if he finally submits. As it will work, you become the top of the pecking order, and since it constantly changes, you could be attacked more as a result.

Your welcome. We did end up getting rid of the one in this video eventually. We just had more roosters then we can have. Honestly we have 4 roosters right now, since we have enough hens to rooster ratio. And non of our roosters chase us, attack us, are rough on the hens and are ok with being picked up and carried around by our daughter. If there is any aggression and you have tried to tame it and no luck I would search out another breed. I find certain breeds are more laid back then others. Basically if you can't be outside with out being afraid of the rooster, or can't feed or collect your eggs without being harassed by the rooster I would get rid of him. Not sure if that helps you with your question?

Absolutely! I do really recommend Buff Orpingtons. They are fairly docile and are easy to get your hands on one. Another breed I recommend is Partridge Chanteclers. They also are docile. Both breeds my 10 year old daughter picks up and walks around with them, and they seem to treat the hens nicely too which is also important. I have heard good things about the regular White Chanteclers but I have never owned one myself. I will tell you when I have mixed my Orpington rooster with females of other breeds, they can take on the other breeds temperament. I have had good outcomes with my Orpingtons and Blue Laced Red Wyandotte mixes, no aggressiveness there. They are also a nice breed too. Stay away from Barred Rock, Columbian Rock and Rhode Island Red Roo's I have had bad experiences with them. Again, this is just from my personal experiences and opinions. Feel free to ask any questions, I try to be as open and honest about everything I share.

My parents have their own chickens mostly australorps. The rooster we have is a bit temperamental but only around strangers and cats. We had to do this to calm him down a few times because he kept chasing the cat.

Our rooster also makes it difficult to get eggs..i throw sunflower seeds etc far from the gate...keeps him busy..slip into the coop..close chicken hatch...get eggs. then open hatch.. when they hear hatch open..they usually run in to see if I gave anything. But if he's at the door that I came in at .I'll throw some treat away from the door and go. It works fine. He's about 4 years old...

Yea, sometimes Jimmy can still be annoying towards kendra and our daughter but after doing it a few times it helps. Some rooster may just take longer to break their habit. Consistency is key, however some rooster may just be too stubborn.

I also have a 5 yr old granddaughter that comes out. She loves the hens but I have to constantly keep myself in between the Roo and her. It’s not fun for her to be scared and we like to sit out and watch the, but Roo has now attacked me sitting in a chair!! I’m sooo done with this Roo!! And no I did not want a Roo, it just turned out that way.

Ohhh. Yeah. We've had our fair share of being around nasty roosters. We like the rooster for 1. He keeps the hens from being being bully's to one another, 2. Predator protection, 3. We always have new chicks around and never need to buy new chickens.

we only have three hens and one rooster. The rooster will climb on the hens back and kind of poke at their head. Each of the hens are developing a little bald spot on their backs. Don’t know why he started doing that. We have a small yard, so the chickens don’t have much privacy. We are always in the yard walking around doing things and we have cats that walk around a lot too. I wonder if the rooster doesn’t like all that activity around him so he takes it out on his hens?

No, the activity shouldn't really bother him. How old is he? I wonder if he is just learning. I know with our young roosters there is a learning curve to getting the mating down pat. Usually they start out looking a bit aggressive and unfriendly but they usually come around, with gained experience.

I have to do this with my roo every few months. He's a perfect roo- he's not afraid of anything and he knows his job and he's serious about it. But he knows ME and he knows MY boundaries and my job. He keeps an eye on me and gives me plenty of respect to feed and clean and take eggs and check over my girls. He gets a little upset if it's wing clipping day, but wouldn't you? I'm snipping wings!! He paces and stink eyes me and then checks them over as soon as I'm done. He has rushed me a couple times, but it's when I'm doing clean up or winterizing and he thinks I'm in his territory too long. Then we have a chat about who pays the bills, and he's fine again. He likes to head fake the gate after I leave just to keep up his reputation. But he keeps an eye out for hawks and girls that sneak over the fence. He doesn't let my husband near anything, but he doesn't feed them or care for them either. My little one often "helps" with care so Roo knows him and neither of them are intimidated. I have taught him how to pick up and hold properly and that if the roo charges him, not to run but to face him down, and make him snuggle until he submits.

This does not work with my polish rooster. He’s only 21 weeks old. He bounces right back. I think it makes me look more so like an enemy. I raised him from a baby and all a sudden he comes at me sideways about three weeks ago. Makes me sad.

Oh I know it is sad when you raise them then you need to get rid of them. Some roosters are harder than others to deal with. We tend to base our chicken breeds off there temperaments. Just something we have learned along the way. lol Sorry to hear this hasn't worked for you.

I have a Roo that will come up to me with the hens and are fine but often i would turn around and walk away to hearing something and then turn around suddenly see the rooster was charging up at me but would always stop short and not attack me 😂😒 (only once in the coop it tried to bite me with a bathrobe on) I tried twice to mount him and hold him just the other day; but he still charged once this afternoon lol maybe its just a bit of a process.

It may take multiple tries, we have also found over the years the temperament of the breed plays a factor in it too.

How many times do you have to do that maneuver before he completely understands and takes his proper place.

We did it once or twice a day, then went down to maybe a couple times after that. It's not a miracle maneuver and works first try. If you have a very stubborn breed it's harder.

I kind of do this. I have 4 roosters and they are all different levels of mean. They dont struggle as bad as this one in the video but I do get to where I hold them.

Yes each rooster is different and I believe some of it can depend on the breed too.

The roosters can be aggressive with the breed.

Does this work with a rooster thats sort of aggressive towards hens? I have 18 total, 3 groups. Each group has a rooster. My main (first 6) the rooster isnt aggressive towards me at all just my mom and dad and pretty much other people. The second (4) the rooster isnt aggressive to anyone just to my first 6 and the last 8, well they are still very young and learning the pecking order. My main issues is my first rooster attacking people but me, and the second rooster attacking my first hens.

I am not sure what you would do for the hens, if he is not treating the hens well, I would say you need a new rooster. This does work for roosters towards people. However, that being said, some breeds are not as friendly as others and he may just be too stubborn to handle. We really like our Buff Opringtons and the Chantelclers. Very nice roosters for the most part, a bit of training yes, but are usually great with his hens too.

Hi would this work with a leghorn white rooster ? Mine is 30 weeks old and already attacking me and chasing me i read somewhere that white leghorns can be the most Agressive ones

There is no harm in trying. It yes, sometimes it does make a difference with the breed. Certain breeds are harder to train and other breeds pick up really quickly due to the personalities of the breeds. That is why we have choose to have only certain types of roosters. No. The younger rooster don't quite have them yet. Jimmy has them but he isn't too bad.

I wonder though if aggressive equals more protective. Still love muh boy. You are spot on, humiliation 😅. Never be mean because that will make him respond exactly as you would respond--fight or flight. Pick him up by his legs till he tires himself then cradle him firm, talk to him like a child in front of his womens.... Make him your b#@ch basically. Before long he may actually become a bit affectionate. Well....as roosters go.

Do you know about the "around the world" where you hold the rooster by the legs upside-down then throw your arm in a windmill motion twirling the rooster not too fast but full 360°s. My mom thought me that one it's very effective.

Ive had my rooster and 5 hens since mayish last year, and my rooster has only became aggressive last week. Should i be concerned? He was super sweet, he would let my hold him and pick him up. But now i cant on my hens without being in fear of turning my back. What happened?

Honestly, he is just growing into himself. Roosters take awhile to become adults. I would start doing this if you can before it becomes a habit. Some roosters are more aggressive if its in the genes too. I find aggressiveness is more common in certain breeds.

@PloughmansBackyard well I believe he's one of those Easter Eggers, as I also have a hen one. And I've had him for a year now, he once belonged to someone else but she got sick so she had to get rid of them, I don't know how long she had them but. I don't know how quickly roosters grow, but he's a big boy. He's twice the size of Easter hen, and he's a little bigger than the other hens.

so my neighbor has chickens and a couple of roosters but on is always alone in my yard and has chased me and even jumped up on me and attacked. I don't want to hurt him but he's staying to get on my nerves. I guess he goes in the coop at night with the flock because we have fox and coyotes so he wouldn't make it through the night otherwise. Any ideas on how to get him out of my yard ?

Aww, other than putting up a fence I would try to talk to your neighbour. That's unfortunate. Chickens tend to go where the food is and if there are two roosters he's probably trying to stay away from the other one. They tend to fight.

@@PloughmansBackyard yes, I think they accidentally got 3 roosters and that one wants nothing to do with the others. I did feel sorry for him and fed him a couple of times. If he didn't scare me I'd probably try to adopt him. I already have a feral cat ( used to be) follow me and my dog everywhere. Husband calls it my menagerie so what's a rooster to add to it 😁

lol yes, often time when you buy chicks or hatch your own there is "surprise roosters" or more than you anticipated for. I hope it get resolved for you.

Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Some roosters are more dominate. Sometimes breed can determine that too, can definitely make it hard to reverse.

I have a pet chicken, she is aggressive, when she gets up she tries to peck me, but she is good, I just don't know why she sometimes has that attitude out of nowhere. Help me please 🥺

Do you just have one chicken? We have found having only hens they tend to be bullies to one another. Getting a rooster can help with bullying.

Yea. Gloves are optional. I just had them with me but they are not required.

It seems no one has the patience to get to know their birds anymore. By sitting with them daily, they will learn to trust you. Using aggressive techniques will just make an aggressive bird even more so. If you want roosters that are calm, but still good protectors, this isn't the way to get them.

We actually do spend a tremendous amount of time with our birds, with a lot of patience even. But sometimes not all roosters are the same And this technique is a great benefit. The results are real.
