How To Put Up Sheep Fencing Wire Easily Without A Strainer

Putting up sheep fencing isn’t difficult, especially with two people, but if you want to get the wire tight then this is a really good method. Yes, you could buy an expensive wire strainer - but they usually pull only one strand at a time so the fence gets distorted. You could tie one end of the wire to a tractor - but the tractor will be in the way by the hedge. So use this method and it’s easy.
(Ok, so not everyone has a ratchet strap - but they’re still much cheaper to buy than a wire puller.)
Hope this helps - please like and share if you know anyone else who might be interested. Thanks!

I just want to say thank you for this video. I live in france with a french partner and I wanted to explain how I've done fencing your way in the past. It's helped him understand how its done with no need to buy expensive equipment. I couldn't find a single video in french using this method so I'm very happy to use yours as it's self explanatory 😁😁

Great video. I made one of these and used it today for a new fence. Saved so much messing about. Every line tight in one go and as someone else already noted, you can pull off the tow bar if there is no convenient tree!!

I’ve tried this and it works fairly well, my ratchet strap is a bit small and flimsy so I couldn’t really get the tension I wanted it. BUT don’t worry if your fence is not quite as tight as you hoped - just twist a few strands of the horizontal wire 90 degrees and you’ll feel it tighten up nicely. I did this and my fence went from competently wobbly to having a decent spring in it now

I made a strainer out of a couple of pieces of 4X2,and, eight 3/8 bolts about 30 years ago,and,am still using it. Connected a hefty short chain with a hook on the end,looped the chain and hook around the pull bar on a little Fergie tractor,and,the fence pulled up absolutely square. The boards were clamped with the 3/8 bolts onto the ringlock over one of the vertical wires,so kept it straight on then strain. The strainer boards still work even tho the tractor karked! 30 years ago we had to improvise, as a lot of the new fancy straining gear was just not available, as it is today.

wonderful crank system that I can make up from what I have in shed. Here in west australia we have sheep net with extra corrosion coating on lower edge which helps with net longevity. This is particularly important for places within 5 km of sea where marine damp speeds rust.

I personally would use fencing pullers that are specifically designed to pull up the bottom and the top of the rylock, as opposed to using a ratchet strap that only tensions the middle and by the looks of things Not very tightly. Pulling off two strong Strainers also helps 🤣

That's a waste of good materials to be honest, for about £20 more you could have bought four 6" strainers and dug them well in on that ground with a decent shovel. Welsh mountain sheep would just nose under your netting and wriggle under it the way you've erected it. From personal experience I've found that if you're fencing for a couple of days you might as well do it so it'll last 20 years. Netting needs to be tight, as in guitar string tight for a number of reasons, the main one is when it's very tight, it's rigid, so sheep can pull their heads back out of the squares easy, when it's loose, it becomes a noose.

@rubygray994
@rubygray994 9 жыл бұрын
WayOutWest Blowinblog The Way Down South bits of NZ would be getting close to your latitude (and to the howling South Pole weather), but the Way Up North bits are almost subtropical. The Land of the Long White Cloud is very long indeed. My island state of Oz is about 40 degrees South, but there's nothing between us & Ann Tuttiker either. She's a frigid spiteful virago at times. The past 2 weeks, we have had sweltering weather, chilly nights, howling gales that would blow the milk out of your tea, sleet, and snow on the nearby mountains. All in a summer's weather.
@WayOutWestx2
@WayOutWestx2 9 жыл бұрын
Ruby Gray Ha! Sounds familiar. We often have gales - usually wet and mild, but sometimes we have storms and they're just plain scary! What a wonderful planet it is - so interesting and exciting. It would be easy to set off in a little boat and keep going - and it might happen one day - but I'd miss my bees and there would have to be room on board for the horses for Sandra. In the meantime, KZfaq is better than nothing. When are we going to see your garden, for instance? Or the view from your rooftop? : - )
@rubygray994
@rubygray994 9 жыл бұрын
Well the view from my rooftop would be a bit depressing for you at present. Miles of browned-off grass that has been gnawed to dust by 1,000 hungry dairy cows next door. Some forest in the distance, a mountain over yonder, my little flock of sheep almost invisible in the long dry sheep-coloured grass. But I DO HAVE BEES! So excited about that! A very kind man with a very Irish name gave me a nucleus 3 weeks ago. They had been crammed into 4 shallow frames for 10 weeks. He said I would need to feed them, as it is so terribly dry at his place. But since I brought them home, they have been foraging busily on many things in this area which has almost no bees at all. My autumn raspberries are buzzing and have never had a better set of fruit. The delicious scent of eucalyptus honey wafts out of the hive in the evenings. I just love standing under the ash tree watching them do their tiny thang!

Ruby Gray Well, congratulations Ruby! Yes, life just isn't as good without a background hum of contented bees. And so many people just don't hear them anymore. Very pleased for you - and a bit jealous because it's still cold and grey here and we're ready for spring but spring is still a while away. Still love to see that video of your place one day! x

@1hornetmaster
@1hornetmaster 7 жыл бұрын
I realise that your trying to keep costs down but, in the long run your only costing yourself more money!! Take the time and effort to dig in proper straining posts and struts. It will make a MASSIVE difference!! There are videos on how to do that on here that are very cost effective, check out tordado wire's video on it! (Although for what you guys are doing don't worry about the heal plate). Your cheap wire straining technique is a novel idea, but I have an idea, if you don't want to spend much, on improving it! Use two straps, one on top and one on the bottom. It will make a monstrous difference. If you use a proper straining post, you can pull the wire up to that, then the little bit of slack between your boards and the post you just pull each strand tight with your fencing pliers and staple to the strainer. Then take off your ratchets and boards, job done!! I hope this helps make your fences stock proof for many more years and last a lot longer 👍🏼👍🏼

+Ben Espinoza (Your lambs had kids? Interesting!) we use wire mesh that is designed to stop even the smallest lambs, so it's easy. I guess you could just put a wire diagonally across all the lower openings? zig-zag along the fence? A lot of work, but cheaper than more netting on the top.
