Today I want to show you how to enhance your acoustic and vocal guitar recordings with some simple but powerful tools like EQ, compression, and reverb.
If you've recorded your acoustic guitar and vocals at the same time, mixing should be a breeze.
Primarily because you have so few options available to you. But this is not a bad thing.
In fact, simplicity in mixing fast is a good thing.
With just a few tweaks we can put some polish on these home studio recordings and get them ready to share with the world.

I wish I understood the technicality of this so much lol. I just write, sing, and play guitar, but understanding the fundamentals of how to use software and all of the different options for mixing and mastering is so much to learn. I wish there was a cheap way to learn I guess this is a good place to start but to be able to ask questions one on one would be so helpful and to see what someone is doing as they mix.

Great vid as always, Graham. I have a question somewhat related. I've got an entire album I recorded with a friend of mine a few years back. He put his mixing touch on them, but then his computer crashed and he lost the files; now all I have are the .wav audio files. Many of the tracks don't sound balanced very well. Some of the lead vocals are louder/punchier at times. The same goes with the guitars (it's only a vocals/guitars album, Bluegrass style). My question is: how would you go about mixing/mastering an album of this nature? I love the songs and believe it would be great to release some day, but I don't know how to go about saving these songs.

Real good overview video Graham, I do Live Audio I get all you were saying. I was hoping to find a shortcut by someone else than myself. This is for Musicians to quick dial-in when the Soundman for the band is not there at a gig. I know extremely talented players, when it comes to audio, I find it's the Keyboard player or sometime the Bass player that can dial-in a good sound, that's clean and not muddy. However, this will force me to make a quick Cheat card or Sound for Dummies outline. I will check some more of your videos, you have good pace and timing. ~ 86dB on the flipside.

A question: I've got a K&K Trinity transducer & mic pickup in my acoustic, which I record to a stereo track (transducer one side, mic the other) and it sounds really natural - would you just do the eq/comp/verb stuff in this video on a stereo track, or actually rather record each to a mono track and tweak them separately? If you get my drift..

It's great when you have great recordings done in an ideal environment to start off with. Could you do one recorded in say, a bedroom or even a bathroom?
@PERPowns
@PERPowns 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't record in a bathroom unless you enjoy the sounds of the room's flutter and plan to use that in your recording. As far as recording in a bedroom, I believe Graham has done a few videos on something similar in the past. The best advice I could give you is stay away from walls, if you can help it. I set up my mic as close to the center of my room as I can with the mic pointing to my open closet (a closet full of hanging clothes absorbs a decent amount of sound) and I also have an sE Reflexion Filter. Short of the occasional weird resonance I have to eq out, the recording quality is very usable, even for a more intimate song, i.e. just vocals and guitar. All the same mic techniques he's showed in this series are applicable to any room, really. The Rode NT-1 and Shure SM57 (which were used in these videos) are great "budget" mics in their own regard. SM57 can be had for ~$70 used and an NT1 used for ~$150. Both very inexpensive but very usable mics!

@johnbrown8740
@johnbrown8740 Жыл бұрын
The videos are very informative and helpful, to a degree. However, the concept is built around helping amateurs with home recording, but the environment he is using is well prepared and he is using good near field monitor speakers so he can hear what is really going on with the adjustments he is making to the sounds. That way if he plays the tracks in different environments on different sound systems, it will sound balanced and clear with a good balance of volumes and bass and high end etc. Problem with that is, in reality, most of us amateur home recordists do not have the hardware he has such as the monitors and audio interface he has, which does make a difference, or the environment like he has. We are using a lesser 2 input interface ( Scarlett 2i2), cheap monitors or budget headphones, and the room we are in is our bedroom, a space in a basement like a rec room or one end of the living room in a small apartment like me What we hear is quite different from what he is able to hear, therefor our end result doesn't translate very well when we play it other places on other systems like on our phone, in the car, or a buddies stereo or computer. I'd like to see him address this fact and give a true clear picture as to what it is we can really expect as an end result in the real world where we songwriters and amateur recordists are starting out due to what we can afford in these times, and maybe more about what we can do to combat our poor environments with the realistic budget we have. I'm a songwriter and single parent in an average income bracket. P.S. that high register vocal part is ouch to the ears and any amount of EQ isnt gonna fix it, Maybe use some other vocal parts for your videos Graham ... LoL

One thing I've been trying to find out is whether you will be getting phase issues from the delay between the microphones with the bleed. If so, how do you go about minimising this after recording?
@rtrosley
@rtrosley 3 жыл бұрын
Yo, select the audio region. Go into the menu on the tool bar called audio suite I believe -Invert-click render. Should reduce likely hood of phase issues if both tracks are very similar waveforms.
@aholder4471
@aholder4471 2 жыл бұрын
If you are recording this yourself the thing to realize is that the time to look and deal with phase issues is before recording. After the fact just flip the phase button and see which sounds better or if it still sounds off either way and you know that the mics were supposed to be the same distance from the source, then you can nudge one of the tracks to get the peaks of the waveform to align. This becomes quickly tedious and also my ear gets tired quickly doing this sort of thing. It's much easier to move the mic while tracking. If you struggle with this, you can always flip the phase switch while tracking and play guitar and then move the mic until both mics together sound as thin as you can get them, and then flip the phase back to normal and the bass should come back and everything should be in phase (in phase enough anyways). Having said all that, phase is one of those topics that I think everyone needs to remember the old saying " if it sounds good, it is good" and perfectly in phase isn't always 100% of the time the best sounding. Plus it isn't possible IMO to get 20 mics all perfectly in phase on a drum set anyways. All the mics are different distances from the kit and all the individual drums are different distances from the overheads and room mics. For this reason engineers usually choose either the snare (or kick sometimes) to be the drum that is perfectly in phase in every mic. If you are super technical and only have a couple mics on a guitar cab, you can send a sin wave through the amp and capture that in the mics and then move the far mic until the peaks align. Keep in mind also that sound moves at about 1ft per Ms so it won't reach the mics at the same time, and we need to hear that difference in time to be able to hear the distance illusion were often trying to create with 2 mics of different distances. 😀 Have fun. Steve Albini has a good video out there on phase showing the 2 mics on the guitar cab thing, nerding out with his oscilloscope. A guy after my own heart. He's a great engineer. Hope this helps. 🙏
