Today I sat down with my parents to ask them some questions about what it was like to raise me. What it took to get me to where I am today and some of the challenges along the way!

Spencer’s charisma and dynamism captivate audiences every time he speaks. Whether addressing corporate leaders, non-profits or the education world, listeners are mesmerized as Spencer describes his journey after losing both legs from the pelvis down at the age of five, to when he climbed, and summited, Mount Kilimanjaro using his hands and wheelchair. Spencer is a top-ranked keynoter, author of the best-selling book Standing Tall: My Journey, and star of the documentary Redefine Possible: The Story of Spencer West, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012.
Produced by: Spencer West and Jake Clement

Way to go mom, for being an ADVOCATE for your son, even against the doctors wishes. A good parent knows what their child needs.

I was born blind and the doctor said I would have severe learning disabilities. They gave my mother information on it and suggested it might be better to send me to some type of medical care facility, My Mom also fought them on this and they hated her. But, she continued to do exercises with me when I was a baby, and by the time I was one I was no longer blind. Going through school I was in AP classes and had no problem going through college and earning my Master's Degree. Just goes to show you that doctors don't always know what is best for your child.

I had something similar but not as severe as yours. I had a period in my childhood where I was really scared of fire and would run out of the house every time my mum cooked something in the kitchen because I was scared of the house burning down. I think I saw something in the news about a house burning down due to a left on stove so that triggered it. They took me to a doctor and he told my parents (without doing any checks whatsoever) that my brain was probably underdeveloped for my age and that I will not make it through school because I would be too stupid for that (not his exact words, but that’s how he meant it). Fast forward a year and my anxiety of my house burning down suddenly disappeared. I got into primary school and was the best student from day one till the end of primary school and continued to be one of the bests in HS. So yeah... doctors aren’t always right and if it’s is something very serious: get a second opinion.

@@brittanypierre3104 ...did you not read either of these stories? They are both examples of bad doctors. Of course medicine isn't perfect. That is why it's called practicing medicine. As in there is always something to learn no matter how long you've been doing it. Know-it-all doctors who shut people down like that need to check themselves or quit 🤷‍♂️

@@private13 lol I’m not gonna argue with you sir. These are educated people we’re talking about, they go by the book and they mean you no harm. They have oath in contract to only do the best for patients. That being said, going by the book may not work for every patient as there are millions of variations within circumstances regarding illness and conditions. Even the best of the best physician can get it wrong. Saying they should quit their job when they are doing what they went to school for is silly. Why don’t you try diagnosing and treating people with your big bad uneducated self not knowing shit since you think you know it all.

Wowwww...... I've seen and commented on several of Spencer's videos and just about always comment on how spectacular and exceptional he is. Not to take away form you buddy - but it's clear that you come from pretty remarkable parents. You are what you are - in great part - because even though life threw challenges at you from the get-go - life also had you come into the space of these two to raise you, shape you, and give you the space and support to allow you to grow into who you really are. My only frustration is that I didn't get to be your neighbor!

I empathize so much with your mother. I have some serious illnesses, and I find that a lot of doctors can’t separate between facts and opinion. I always respect that they are telling me accurately what the problem and the options are. I sometimes disagree with them regarding which option to take. As your parents said... the choice your doctor would make in your shoes, isn’t necessarily the choice you would make.

Doctors are not God, although some sure think they are. I was a sickly baby and one pediatrician told my mom my legs would straighten out when they fixed my bowel issues. She called him a quack and told the nurses he was not to touch me. Another doctor told her I was hydrocephalic, again she knew I wasn't. Granted my mum had some medical training but she wasn't a Dr. And she could spot an idiot a mile away. Parents generally know their kids better than some doctor who sees them for one aspect of your life.
