How to raise pH in Hydroponics - Avoid this mistake

pH adjustment in Hydroponics is a daily activity done. Be it a small hydroponics garden or a large commercial farm, pH correction happens. It is mostly pH down that is used, as the plants consume more nitrates during their growth phase.
At times, pH correction may result in an overshoot that leaves the pH levels in the nutrient reservoir lower than expected value. This is not always good.
pH lower than ideal range can result in some elements not being taken up.
This video helps in giving answers to the following questions
1. How to adjust pH in Hydroponics
2. How to raise or increase pH in Hydroponics
3. How to use pH UP.
4. The pH went too low. How to recover
5. By mistake I added too much acid. How to correct it.
Similar procedure can be followed for hydroponic nutrients bought from online gardening store www.gardenguru.in
I would also recommend you to watch my other videos on pH

Thank you for mentioning the nutrient contributions of pH up and down. Many people don't understand this and don't realize if they are adding both each day, they are no longer feeding their intended nutrient ratios anymore.

My ph rise from 5. 5 to 8.4😬in just one day.. Is that normal Sir! I have to add phosphoric acid daily to keep the ph in range. What do you suggest. 🙏

about time someone said it's a daily thing because i swear some days it's all good, then it'll drop a point and a half then after fixing it may drop again... THEN it'll be just the opposite. it sucks because i'll end up in high sevens or into the 3's in a day.
@TheGeekgardener

Ha ha. Totally yes. I keep a larger reservoir to buffer the changes and bring it to 5.5 everytime I change. It take a couple of days to reach the 7s.

Thank you sir, but i still have a question regarding a current situation, if i may ask you... let's say i have a plain water tank ph 7.9 and i add some acid to bring it under ph6 but just with the acid, my EC is skyrocketing... Honestly i dont undestrand this situation. For the rest of the case, i add nutriments for 1st stage vegatative like 4 weeks old witch i like less than 1000ppm in practice, but in fact, my EC is not related to theses 1000ppm after the acid injection, it's more like 3000 ppm... anyone could help ? Happy growing season to you all ;) Cheers

Can I add water to raise pH instead of a base.
@TheGeekgardener
@TheGeekgardener 2 жыл бұрын
In some cases, yes hardwater does raise the pH but it also adds the salts it comes with .

Its nice to see some accurate information for a change :) Diluting the ph down in ro water can reduce the risk of accidental overdose. The additional dilution will also mitigate the rise in EC. For leafy greens you can supplement N with a small amount of ammonium which will cause the ph to decrease on uptake, reducing the need for additional acid.
@TheGeekgardener
@TheGeekgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thanks for your comment and am glad you appreciate it. We do add certain % of nitrogen as ammonium in the nutrients we prepare so that it takes care of the downward drift in pH. I have noticed, this pH downward overdose happens when acid addition is guesstimated :-)

@@TheGeekgardener You have to guess how much to add initially but as long as you guess under rather than over its all good. After you`ve mixed a few batches you get to know how much it takes. PH iis a good indicator of what nutrients are being removed from the solution by the plants, upward shift in veg tends to reflect nitrate (NO3) removal. In the case of tomatoes, the PH can tell you when the plants are transitioning to bloom. They begin to strip large amounts of potassium (K) from the solution even before the flowers appear which shows up as a drop in PH. Monitoring the nutrient solution can tell you a lot about what the plants are doing :)
@TheGeekgardener

@@atomizer2665 Very well described. Thanks for your detailed comment. Yes the initial value is guesstimate but far lower than what would cause an overshoot. Monitoring nutrients solution closely gives lot of insights. Many (atleast here in India) don't grow fruiting crops in a recycled system, they dont get to see the pH drop. It does drop due to the uptake of K and Ca. What crops do you grow?

@@TheGeekgardener I grow the usual things like toms, cukes, leafy greens, starwberries etc etc. I mainly use aeroponics but i also have a large flood and drain bucket system. The aeroponic setups run drain to waste so i can compare the input ppm, PH and water volume to the output (runoff) values in real time. It may seem a little overkill to some but the information allows me to tailor the nutrient and mist delivery to match the plants needs more closely which increases the overall efficiency :) Some folks may not realize plants uptake more nutrient and less water at the start of the day and gradually take up less nutrient and more water as the day progresses. The small amount of run off from the aeroponic setups is swallowed up by the flood and drain system so nothing goes to waste.
@TheGeekgardener
@TheGeekgardener 2 жыл бұрын
@@atomizer2665 Run to waste Aeroponics system is a good idea. Without wasting a lot of nutes, you get the absorption pattern. Nice to know that you run a Flood and drain system as well. I did Aero long ago. Nowadays I do mostly NFT and Substrate! Nice to connect. See you around! Happy Farming
