Jimmy, This is a great video. I would also add Item 1A. Risk Factors. I find it useful to see what could affect a company’s revenue and how, i.e. COVID-19, recessions, shifts in consumer’s habits, competition, etc.

Hey Jimmy, thanks for the great video. Just want to know how you think about if someone says analysing financial statements is a waste of time because companies never report true numbers. I was trying to do some analyses on the companies I'm interested in, but my boyfriend says it's worth the time!

Question: I invested in MVIS in 2021 (I know I'm kicking myself for this decision) I am reading the 10K report alongside this video. For the years of 2019 and 2020, the total revenue from products, licenses royalties, and contracts is greatly less the cash flow generated from the company's investment activities. This information was published in March 2021, if I had read this document then it should have forewarned me that this company was going down and to exit or am I wrong in how I interpreted this information?

Hello, thank you for sharing this video. Just a couple of quick remarks: 1:28: The annual report is not synonymous with the 10-K S.E.C. filing (though some, usually small, companies do simply use their 10-K as their annual report, perhaps the latter just with a short introductory letter). 9:14: The current-ratio would be current assets to current liabilities, not the other way around. Thanks for the feedback 🙂 and regarding the annual report, you're right, some companies create a separate annual report. But all US listed companies must file a 10k annually. And that was the context I was using them synonymously. And generally, even very large companies use the 10k as their annual report, sure they pretty it up a bit for investors, but usually it's nearly identical, except for maybe a ceo letter or something of that sort

@@LearntoInvest, a grave annoyance to me is when a company somehow is allowed to get away with using a flowery annual report as its 10-K filing - General Electric comes to mind. An important government-required document turns rather to some pretty colors and aggressively self-indulgent marketing.

90 percent of IPO’s are over valued period. First check if they are cash flow positive and second it up with if you are confident that business generates 10 percent returns for 5 to 10 years .

For 2019, as one example, I did 98,392 (gross margins)/ 260,174 (total net sales) = 0.378178. AKA ~38% Hopefully that clears it up

Hey bud not to question your integrity but how did you end up with 38 percent on the gross margin. I followed your division from the previous example but the numbers are not adding up

Sorry for the confusion! We are trying to see what percentage of revenue gross profit is. So we take the Gross Margins and divide by total sales. So it's 98,392/260,174 = 0.378 ... Rounded to 38%. Hopefully, that clears it up a bit. Thanks for the support and the feedback :)

Thanks for the support, many times the company will provide an excel of their numbers if we ask investor relations. Besides that I use Edgar, which let's me download the numbers into excel

For sure! The only real difference is that most 10q don't have a business section. So if your new to the company, I would start with the 10k, otherwise you can start with the MD&A in the 10q 🙂👍

Hey, so most financial statements show numbers in millions to help make them a bit more readable. So 260,174 is actually 260 billion 174 million. It just makes them easier to read then 260,174,000,000 😀👍 hopefully that helps
