If you sell honey, a refractometer is a vital piece of equipment. It's important to know your honeys moisture content, and to be confident in your reading. This video shows you how to read and calibrate a refractometer.

Great tips Gus. I have 3 refractometers, however I only know where 2 are. 🤣😂 I do agree that it's important to have 2 to check against each other. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for another great video. I carry mine in the field and recheck from time to time. I have to admit that I didn't think about having two. Great idea 💡

When I purchased my refractometer there was no calibrating oil and the instructions for calibrating were COMPLETELY off (talking about using water....). Had to do a lot of research to find the olive oil technique. Thank you on behalf of all future beekeepers needing to figure this out :D

Good info Gus! Just bought a second unit that's a 10-32% range as the one I have is more honey specific of 13-25% which is nice too for reading. I have found that it helps to let the unit with sample sit for at least a few minutes. Also, for some reason, I find that even extracted honey that's in a closed bucket stabilizes and goes down in moisture a little bit after sitting for a few days. Not sure why though. Thanks!

Gus air temp will change the calibration the company says to calibrate it in the same place and time you are extracting

Gus,, its my understanding that you use the Brix scale when using extra virgin olive oil to the setting of 71.5 and that will also calibrate the moister scale at the same time.

Same difference 71.5 or 27, just pick a side it’s the same across

This is the fifth video I'm watching and still nothing makes sense is it possible I bought the wrong kind of refractometer? Do they make different kinds?
@barryw472611 ай бұрын
yes they do. surgar, alcohol, moisture, specific gravity, antifreeze and honey can all be measure by refractometers.
