I started playing guitar 40 years ago (not classical). Just want to say that you are a terrific teacher. I wish more teachers incorporated the holistic approach to playing you employ. Great teacher.

It's weird how not obvious this is. This has blown my mind. I've definitely pulled baselines out and got the feel of them when having trouble in a certain section/piece. But nothing like this. Wish I could afford lessons or had the time. To have that feedback would be wonderful. But I play in the middle of the night. But your channel has been invaluable to me. Just wanted to say thank you very much for your effort.

I often hear people say that reading notation is like reading a script, and that music is living and doesn't live on a page it's a tragic misunderstanding, I think. there is life in the understanding of what is written! It's like the difference in Keanu Reeves reading Shakespeare as compared to Patrick Stewart. One might feel monotone, weak, and lifeless, whereas the other speaks the words so sweetly and beautifully, the words drip of their lips like honey, and take on life from the speaker. The same goes for reading music. Last semester, I had a teacher who found such meaning from a 16 measure Andantino from Ferdinando Carulli, he kept finding new things for me to practice in something I couldn't percieve by myself. It's a huge topic you've tackled here, man. it's impressive you explained what you could in the time you had with this video!

Great lesson. My difficulty with reading notes is deciding on fingerings and where to play it on the fretboard...

- Yes, very nice lesson from "the shed". - And yes, what you say is the problem of a lot of people. Almost every musician is having that problem. Even high level professionals. It is basically because the standard notation system is not specifically made for the guitar and specially the guitar finger board, which in fact demands another notation system. - At the moment I am writing a book on a didactic method and a new notation system just to adress this problem for people. A method to really internalize the guitar finger board. So that you kow exactly where the notes are on the fingerboard by heart and even know the sounds of these notes even before you play them. - If guitar shed is interested in this special didactic method they can contact me. /- -

Thank you very much for clearing one misunderstanding that I had. I used to think that two or three notes sounding simultaneously means playing a chord, and therefore all notes should be equally loud. That was completely wrong! Thanks again!

EXCELLENT ADVISE!!!!Play Beautifully!!! Control ALL the voices!!! Playing in 3D!!! This is a video that everyone should check out. Anyone can play black dots on a page, but to bring the music to life and give it character, means we as musicians must be conductor, performer, and listener all at the same time!!! And it separates those who can play, from those who "CAN" play!! Thanks for this golden nugget...it was right on time!!💥💥💥💥💥💥💥

The middle line has a couple of rests. You didn't stop the string on these. Is there a reason why? But thanks for the help. Helps me think through.

I'd like to mention that your audio track probably has a gate effect on that cuts off some of the transients on the guitar sound and it makes it sound a bit weird.

Yes this is an easy song. With Bach the melody changes all the time, going up and down in the base. Could you show an invention with three voices by Bach? It would be interesting to show how to interpret it. Thanks
@rjlchristie
@rjlchristie 5 жыл бұрын
It irritates me that many (most) guitarists are often blind to reading and executing rests, as you unknowingly demonstrate at 11:50 - 11:58 . In this case, whether to observe (by enforcing silence) the quaver rest of the middle voice in bars consequent to the first is likely to be open to interpretation. But this is not always the case, so when identifying the parts, rests should always be considered carefully, they are not just a means of marking time before an entry.

Awesome lesson. And by chance, would be able to give me the link to where I would purchase the guitar lap stand you are using? I have looked at various styles but I am not sure which is a good choice. I have lower back pain from playing so I think I'd benefit from one. Thanks!

Wes Waagenaar Hi Wes, thanks! I am using the Gitano Guitar Support, which you can get from stringsbymail.com and other places. But the best I have seen is the Barnett Guitar Support, which uses magnets and is much nicer and more reliable in performance than anything with suction cups. I don't have a link for the Barnett, but Stringsbymail.com probably has it as well. Hope that helps! Cheers, Allen

i think you are missin to explain that generally the melody has the vertical note line going down from the top, and the base have the note lines gping up from the bottom.

Ok. I can't read sheet music but my question is, how do you know which note on the fretboard? Or is all sheet music just subject to transposing using whichever voicings you choose? Can read tablature but I think it would be awesome to just pull out some sheet music and start shredding out some vivaldi ass shit without ever having heard it... or does this not work like this?

You make it too complicated for beginners. If everyone breaks the piece down by melody, bass and interior voice, they would give up after a few days. Just get the melody down first, then add the bass.
