1. Read books you're in the mood for 2. Track what you're reading 3. Read throughout the day 4. Read shorter books 5. Join a bookclub 6. Don't worry about what you think you "should" read, just read what you wanna 7. It's ok to stop reading a book you don't like

Great tips! I agree reading more than one book at a time is game changing. I think of it like TV shows. I’m not always in the mood to watch a romcom or a documentary but there is a show or a book for whatever I happen to be feeling at the moment. I usually read 5-10 books at a time, more than that and I get overwhelmed.

Any books that seem boring I get them from the pond shop or second hand shop or charity shop, I never keep my books after I read them saves me room in my bedroom and any book I know I’ll like I buy them from Amazon or Morrison sometimes mostly books I think I won’t like I’ll give it a try are bought from charity shops, second hand shops the pound shops cheap shops so I’m not investing to much, I don’t judge a book by it’s cover or title I read for the benefits from it even if it’s like the legacy of war about the World War Two may sound boring but you can also get benefits from it, I’ll allways give things a go. I pick my books what I feel in the mood to or if I feel it, I don’t buy any book I pick my books like I pick my presents and birthday cards and so on for people and events if you know what I mean.

@ValerieBrett

Hi, thanks for watching! For me it depends on the book-I prefer physical books, but if I’m on Kindle I’ll highlight passages or quotes/ideas I like and then save them to Goodreads. For physical books, I really don’t markup or take notes on fiction, but I totally markup my nonfiction books with highlights, underlines, and notes written in the margins. What about you?

I’ve got ADD so reading a lot of books doesn’t work for me. It leads to starting a lot of books and never finishing them as my already concentration-challenged brain acts like a library is a candy store. For me, I just focus on one book and accept that not every sentence, paragraph, or page is going to be a masterpiece. Sometimes I just have to grit my teeth and read through it until the book gets amazing again. Also, forcing myself to finish one book before I begin another adds motivation to actually finish a book.

I also am an ADHD person. I have had similar struggles with starting and finishing things. I am going to try Valerie's suggestions on reading multiple books at a time WITH TRACKING, which I hope will help me complete them. And I'm not going to attempt 30 books. I think max 4, but will start with maybe two books. Much does depend on my mood and I think for me giving myself the permission to read what interests me in the moment (definitely an ADHD thing) rather than just not read that day or force myself to do something that ostensibly I'm doing for enjoyment may be freeing. I recently started using Brilli for adults (an app) because I was pretty much unable to maintain a routine even though I could plan them. It has been a gamechanger. I set up the routines and then just follow along - so no need to bring in memory or focus and no room for distraction which I think have been where the challenges come in. I'm mentioning it because I think re books being able to read multiple books as an ADHDer may similarly be about supportive structure.
@haniyyahn
@haniyyahn 3 жыл бұрын
I also know from (ADHD) experience that tracking books via Goodreads or any of the usual systems is going to be too fiddly for me. What's worked for me before, that I'll use for this pilot of reading more that one book at a time, is x-ing off graph paper squares (usually I make one square equal 10 pages). I would write down the book name and author, lay out the squares it needs (depending on how many pages it's got). I use a simple bullet journal (which was another game changer, for me as an ADHDer), so I'll just track the books on one of its pages.
@ValerieBrett
@ValerieBrett 3 жыл бұрын
@@haniyyahn Even I can overwhelm myself by starting too many books at once, even with tracking, so I think your idea to start with my 4 or so is great! And I find it helps to have a few very different books--so maybe one on philosophy, another easy fiction like a thriller, and then maybe a book of essays. Good luck and let me know how it goes! :)

Oooh, that's a great point. It's definitely much harder when it's required reading! What I like to do that helps me in those instances is schedule a lot of time for reading (treat it like work, like appointments); try to do the most dense or difficult reading first thing in the morning, when my brain hasn't been used yet (it's nice to drink a big coffee and get right into reading); and, let myself switch off with some mindless TV or very easy, enjoyable fiction at night. You’re not actually reading.. 200 books a year means you’re clearing a book start to finish in a day or two. How can you read a 300 page non fiction book in a day and a half, over and over. You’re just skimming through many chapters of many books simultaneously. That’s just mindless reading
@ValerieBrett
@ValerieBrett 3 жыл бұрын
Hi David, yes, I do read this much and I don't skim. I do it (as I mentioned in this video) by reading many books at once, so it's not actually sitting down with one book and consuming it whole in 2-3 days. I read about 2-6 hours per day, and it's not all nonfiction. I do not skim and I don't count books I don't finish. You can see my day of reading here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8WRis2hza2ylJs.html.

@forbesfoofighters 3 жыл бұрын
Audiobooks don’t really count, because you can passively tune in and out, where as physical reading is active. Although, audio books are still incredible none the less. To do what you’re saying, you would have to have incredible reading speed, and devote yourself to reading like it’s quite literally your full time profession. Sorry if I’m being overly naggy and critical, I’m just trying to come to terms with the astonishing claim of 200 completed books, no skimming, in one year. I could see 100 books per year. I probably average around 50 (1 at a time). I feel 200 books would have diminishing returns.

@@forbesfoofighters She has a master's degree in Library & Information Science, so it is literally what she has been trained to do. Idk I think I would include audio books, no?
