@@TheArtisanGeek A true poet will never back a biased label such as Black Lives Matter, as poets and their art is all about holding the middle ground; being the referee, if you will. All lives matter; it's the truth; the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The following is an example of nature's diversity and the harmony of the all inclusive: I'm transfixed; moonlight on a snowy landscape. Yes, last night it snowed and on this night I stand between the black and the white; a dreamy referee cued for a brushstroke of gold. -Cynthia's Canvas by Conal Cochran

I found a love for poetry by listening to this podcast called poetry unbound, where this person with an exquisite voice reads and interprets poems by various authors. I find it’s a relaxing way to sit and think about the poems that were just read and have little help understanding them after.

what i like about poetry is that sometimes its more about yourself than the poem. when i come across a rare and particular type of poem and i feel it wash over me like a wave like you said, i often dont really understand what its talking about, i dont 'get' half of the lines etc, but i love these sorts of poems the most because it almost doesnt matter what the poets intentions are, you can learn a lot about yourself by how a poem you dont understand makes you feel. you can learn about whats occupying your subconcious by observing what meaning you attach to ambiguous words and lines. i feel as though poems like this are more like tools that help you understand yourself, they appeal to something much deeper within you than anything your conscious mind can understand. just goes to show, sometimes the poem reads you!

Just a note on translated poetry! Of course it's impossible to translate poetry (or anything) and retain all of the meaning of the source language, but often translation is a really creative art form in itself - meaning can be gained in translation as much as lost. I find the most rewarding way to consider a translation is as a different work altogether with different things to add to a conversation, rather than an imitation that will never do the original justice. Of course read in the source language if possible, but don't be put off reading translations! Often with older poetry you can find multiple translations and compare them which is also super fun and interesting

I have been a poetry fan for over 40 years. I discovered it when I was 12. I have long said that schools teaching poetry are the reason people don't like to read poetry. You do not read a poem thinking about what it means or what devices are used you simply read a poem for how it makes you feel. I love your take because it fits in well well with mine.

Hi, my name is Emilio and I'm from Puerto Rico. Maybe I'll have errors in my English because that's my second language; my first is Spanish. I found your channel like a month ago and I have to say every video it's like a new and exciting territory, not only of information, but to ask myself what I'm doing with either my own channel and my life as a reader. I'm already 40 and I start reading for pleasure like 6 years ago. The way I found book to read its usually by Booktube and, for some reason, I didn't read books from my own Island or any Latin literature. I've been looking for a way to share all this in your channel, but I was worry to be a long comment... To late. Anyway, I've been rethinking my approach to literature and a better way to share better content in my own channel because it's been changing topics since the first video, hahaha. Thank you for your passion in every video. As I've seen in comments you get to people in multiple ways including me.

May Sarton said that a poem captures a moment of violent change, but only a moment, while a novel is about growth and change. I like that a lot, and feel like it's certainly true for a large amount of the poetry I've read. I was a little worried when I saw the thumbnail with T.S. Eliot's name because I thought you might recommend his poetry to beginners-that can be a disaster imo. I'm glad you suggested his essays. Love your content!

May Sarton was right. Here's 13 lines; a line for every victim; an example of May's wisdom and advice to women everywhere: keep your wits about you at all times... At the breakfast table the headline's dropped between last night's shag and the coffee cup. Yeah, it's always someone someplace else. Randomness: a book plucked from a library's shelf. Whistle down the wind, sweet lass, and all harmony will come to you. Aye, be it petal or kind word; proposal on bent knee with promises of love, your beauty must surely be a magnet to all things good in this world...amirite? The ball-peen hammer; screwdriver and knife; the tools of randomness; unsavoury surprise. Oh, sweet lass; book on the shelf; breakfast table headline...someplace else. -Sutcliffe: The Next One by Conal Cochran

I relate to how you said the way poetry was taught in school wasn't super helpful when it comes to consuming poetry outside a school setting. Thanks for the recommendations!

Not defending the way schools teach poetry, but as someone is in studying to become a highschool English teacher who just so happens to have a passion for poetry, what we are meant to teach pretty much depends on the curriculum, or at least it is in Australia where I'm from. I agree that schools tend to look at mainly figurative language, but I also think we shouldn't dismiss it because it is quite an important part to poetry. I'm already conflicted because I know I'll have to teach what the curriculum says but at the same time I don't want kids hating poetry because of it, and I want to teach the reasons why poetry is such a great artform. I'm so sorry that your high school didn't give you the positive poetry experience you deserved

What I've found really useful when reading poetry - if you can afford it / get them from a library - is to read the book and listen to the audiobook at the same time. You then get a real feel for it. Especially if the poet themselves reads it. Plus KZfaq has a lot of poets reading their own work.

Hello. I'm from Iran and there are some indescribable literary masterpieces composed by sage Persian poets like Sa'di Shirazi, Hafiz, Rumi and Ferdowsi . This one is composed by Sa'di : Human beings are members of a whole, In creation of one essence and soul. If one member is afflicted with pain, Other members uneasy will remain. If you’ve no sympathy for human pain, The name of human you cannot retain! I highly recommend everyone to have their poems read.

Outside a light drizzle begins to fall; it turns the sidewalk into a mirror and speeds the pace of all upon it. In the distance a siren wails as it fades. I read „Grief is the thing with feathers“ last year and although I cant say I got every verse and all the symbolisms, I absolutely loved it. Sometimes I didn’t know what was going on, but it transmitted a lot of emotions, I even ugly cried. After it „passed“ it did feel like a wave had hit me. Ps. I thought the poetry reading was super sweet.

I only started loving poetry after I read poems by one of my favourite ever poets called 'Lieke Marsman'. Something about the rawness + beauty of her words inspired my to start writing myself, both in Dutch and in English and it helped me process what was going on around and inside me. I haven't been inspired lately, which sucks and makes me feel terrible, but the stress of school is overpowering haha. I'm going to try and set some time aside this summer to envelop myself in the world of words again because it truly tugs at my heartstrings in the most comfortingly sentimental way

ive been looking for a video like this because ive been trying to get into poetry independently, and this was really helpful. the idea of letting the poetry wash over you instead of getting bogged down in the details was a revelation for me when you said it. and the dress just STUNNING

You are spot on with reading poetry out loud and emphasizing certain words or sections. It can completely change what I take away from it. I fist learned this listening to the classic, “ Road not taken” by Robert Frost, read by himself. Hearing it read by him made the poem so much more moving. You can hear the wisdom and acceptance of the words.

Your story about the Rupi Kaur love poems had me in stitches! My first book of poems was Allen Ginsberg's Howl and I am guilty of very similar behaviour. Great video, I'm going to try reading some poems out loud.

Yes to telling us your outfit deets at the beginning of the videos. Love it!!! I actually prefer to read poetry quietly lol. I find it's easier for me to process it that way for some reason. I love how you always come at us with refreshing and unique content. Can't wait to hear the reveal of your next readathon!!

Poetry is a lot like koans. They're a condensed story that, through the interplay of language and music, speak to something deeper inside the self: the human condition. It's what connects the reader and writer in a different way than what prose does.

This video was so funny and also really helpful. I can totally relate to your feelings about how poetry is taught in school and how that had shaped your perceptions of poetry. You have definitely convinced me to read poetry now because I do enjoy reading books in verse so I think I will give a poetry collection a try soon.

Thank you for addressing poetry. There are poems that I immediately "get", but also so many others very popular or famous ones that I just find confusing. It was good to hear your fresh take on how to read them.

I loved this video! My entry point into poetry was partly our local slam poetry scene. I don't write much poetry myself, but the poets in our community brought their words to life in amazing ways. ♥ also! your dress truly is wonderful!

I love reading but I've never really got into book tube. I've always felt it focused on how much you read rather than what you read. But your channel is amazing! You are so honest with what you struggle with in terms of reading and the variety of writing that you cover from all over the world is so exciting!

I really disliked poetry the first time we had it in class but when I had a different teacher later I started to see it a bit different and it was easier for me. But I still have trouble connecting to it, so your thoughts on poetry are really interesting! I never considered it as something interactive. Thank you for sharing this video, I enjoyed it and encouraged me to try a different approach to starting poetry :D
