All one needs to know is that anionic surfactants mostly are in clarifying shampoos while nonionic and amphoteric surfactants are in moisturising and even in clarifying shampoo. The MOST IMPORTANT thing is The FORMULATION

Such a good and informative video! ❤ I find good shampoos so hard to find cause most make my hair really dirty or waxy and oily right after I wash it😭. I could take two shampoos like prose and acure and they have mostly the same surfactants in the same order so I think it will clean my hair the same, but prose actually cleans my hair and the acure volume shampoo was awful after washing and even double cleansing. Wish I understood why. Even with sulfate free shampoos and the shampoo actually works I have to scrub a lot more so I don’t miss any spots at the crown of my head or it will be waxy there. I wonder if a hard water filter would help? If it’s made a difference for anyone let me know☺️

New (I have been watching tons of your videos but only recently subscribed) viewer here. I have wavy/curly hair, but definitely haven’t been following the CGM which demonizes sulfates and silicones. I’ve found clarifying shampoo to be a great friend. I have been using only clarifying shampoo, then using a very moisturizing and detangling conditioner plus a (alternating between a protein or moisture based) hair mask, followed by multiple styling products (damage remedy which is both a UV and heat potectant but with added protein, a curl cream and gel or mousse followed by a texture spray for volume/added grit and potentially a hair oil). This routine is exhausting. I’m a low maintenance girl with high maintenance hair I guess 😂 My question is, number one, am I potentially stripping my hair if I use a clarifying shampoo every time I wash my hair (I wash it on average 2x a week)? Should I rotate a sulfate free shampoo with the clarifying shampoo? The curly hair folks I follow recommend this, but I’m just not sure if they’re as informed and educated as you are! ❤ Secondly, how can I simplify my wash days? From start to finish takes probably 1.5 to 3 hours including the full dry time (I usually get my hair 85% dry with a diffuser and let it completely dry before fluffing, adding oil to break the gel cast and using texture spray). So if I want to go somewhere in the AM, this means waking up at 5am or possibly earlier. I have fine thin hair (I’ve experienced hair loss due to some medications), and it’s just a lot to commit to. I rarely embrace my curls and mostly hate my hair because of the time it takes to take care of it “properly”. I recently took all my products to a hair dresser and she was in shock on number of products I use. Most hair stylist I’ve found just do not “get” curly hair, and she just gave me misinformation, which I just did not have the energy to disagree with. If anyone has ideas/information/suggestions for me, I would appreciate it.

I would love to talk more about pH please, especially in shampoo. I’ve read that the pH of hair is around 3.5, so how come companies don’t lower the pH of their shampoo more ? I read conflicting information- one being that using pH that is higher than the hair, damages it and the damage can’t be undone by just using conditioner after. Then I’m told the opposite, that if you use a shampoo with a high pH, all you need to do is condition and no damage will be done. I follow trichologists and cosmetic scientists, read science blogs and constantly get conflicting info. I thought about buying citric acid and adding it to my shampoo to lower the pH closer to the pH of hair.

i appreciate your videos so much, im 17 and i cant afford to buy high end products all the time, your videos helped me find some really good drugstore products. I would have oily hair when i would use sulfate free products but once i switched back to the products with sulfates, dimethicone, etc my hair doesn’t get oily as fast anymore. i can go 2 days without wash now vs when i had to wash my hair daily with the sulfate free shampoos. they wouldn’t leave me hair as clean.

My hair is very prone to drying out. I’m a little leery of using a shampoo with alcohol. Conditioners that can be rinsed out do very little to keep moisture in my hair. Although I’m blond I have low porosity hair and it took so long to find a leave in conditioner that didn’t leave my hair oily.

It sucks because my face, body and scalp break out with acne if I use any SLS ingredients. I am very acne prone. It doesn't matter how well I rinse it out or if I wash my face and body afterwards because it still breaks me out. So do you have any recommendations for people with who are acne prone?

I definitely break out with fungal acne from products around the edges of my face and some blotchy bumps in the middle too. For me it happens with different oils/lipids/butters/ferments in the hair products and even skin products. I would use Sezia to check the ingredients and I’m pretty sure they have some good recommendations. It can be really random to what breaks you out and differ to others. Fungal acne sounds a lot like it matches to your description and I would start there :) I am working on clearing mine and using natural medicine so I don’t have an intolerance to those anymore and they won’t break me out anymore and will update if I find it works💕

I loove your videos! But something that confuses me is that you say that some ingredients are added to off set the stripping effects of surfactants but then you also say that some conditioning ingredients can interfere with the cleansing ability of the shampoo. Won't those two types of ingredients be the same? Maybe I misunderstood something? but I would generally like to know which ingredients to look for that can off set the stripping effects of the surfactants. Keep up the good work tho!

I guess it was a good idea to break down the categories of chemicals found in most shampoos but to what end? SLS are good for those with oily hair but not for dry, damaged hair or color treated hair. Silicones coat hair and lock out moisture: those that require SLS to remove it are the worst. And preservatives….many cheap products contain DMDM hydantoin: just one of many toxic chemicals found in cheap hair care products. This video is great for “how to read a label 101” but it did not provide any information regarding the chemicals that need to be avoided. What kind of sense does it make to buy products that contain garbage ingredients??🤷🏻‍♀️
