It is important to know How to read Structural Steel Drawings, and it isn't something that is covered during university. When starting out reading structural drawings can seem overly complex, however, when you break down steel documentation the drawings are not that complex when you break them down.
I will also be going through how to push your steel drawings into the modern age of BIM that will not only simplify your structural steel drawings but also improve your QA and make your steel drawings easier to check.

Great, practical video Brendan. I used to annotate all my members with their full descriptions. Using abbreviations and "Marks" makes for better drawings without the clutter.

Hi Theuns, I agree that the abbreviated annotations are excellent. I had lots of steel fabricators comment on how easy it was to use. Passes on the same annotation as a full description but reduces the clutter.

Great Channel Brendan, I 've just come accross it and already consumed a fair chuck of the content. Something I see as a gap of knowledge between the consulting industry and the steel fabrication industry is what is currently considered best practice in the steel fabrication industry and the move by industry to utilise advanced manufacturing technologies more. Drawings at some stage will be relied upon less by the fabrication industry and already I am seeing fab shops and steel detailing consultants around Australia move to a preference for smart models as their preferred deliverable. I would be interested to see some vids from you about your experience in this space.
@BrendanHasty
@BrendanHasty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi SMP, I agree that is the direction the industry is heading and linking Analysis to documentations and fabrication drawings. I think it is still many years off, but it is getting easier and easier to do. this would be a interesting topic to cover

Thanks for your great video(s). I would like to know the meaning of 'Ex' in expressions such as 'Ex 10mm ms plate...' Thanks in advance for your attention. PS: The term is usually found in structural steel drawings. I have not been able to find a good reference for this.

Hi Igor, design tollarance would be 10 to 20mm. fabrication is lot less there is only about 4mm.

is CAD still being used for detailing or it is replaced by BIM(tekla ,revit e.t.c)
@BrendanHasty
@BrendanHasty 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shazeb, most details are still 2D but in revit so basically cad. Complex steel details do get modelled in the 3D space and drawing have isometric views. In Australia revit is king at the moment tekla hasn't moved here in mass yet.
