What we read in the bible is the story of one people and their interactions of God. We learn from their mistakes, we grow in our understanding of the nature of God. We should practice caution when applying these words.

1. How do you feel about the concept that bible history is not just a series of events, but rather a “representation of events through words.” Do you find this idea helpful? Problematic? Confusing?
2. As modern western people, reading an ancient eastern text like the Bible can be frustrating at times. What about the biblical narrative do you find frustrating or difficult to understand?
3. How might a better understanding of the biblical authors' literary techniques (character, setting, plot) bring clarity to your frustration?
4. In John 5:39-40, Jesus says "You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life.” From your perspective, what are the risks of simply reading the Bible without following Jesus?
