Ahhhh, thank you so much for this Jemma!! I've just started this week teaching little kids for the first time ever (I'm teaching several groups and the age range of my students goes from 6 to 11 years old). The group I have of 6 years old know nothing about English... and I'm not used to interacting with little children, but I'm ready to learn! You're an inspiration, so thank you! I'm from Spain, btw!

Hi, Jema I really enjoy your videos they have been really helpful for my classes. I teach English in Mexico, in a small town named Huimanguillo. I opened my own English school here and against all odds, I have tried to implement a new vision towards second language learning for young learners cuz many people here believe the little one might get confused when learning a second language. Now I have almost 3 years teaching pree-schoolers, kindergarteners and elementary school students. Thanks a lot for your videos!!! Greetings from Mexico!!!!!

I'm teaching in Taiwan and basically that was how my reading class was in the beginning of your video At a complete and total desperation I started finding stories on KZfaq that have been turned into movies like little cartoons. For example alligator under my bed. Boy was that a big hit. What it was is I let them watch it because it's like 6 minutes and then as I would watch it I would stop it and teach them through the video. Who is he? A boy. What is it? An alligator. This is what I do for a very tiny students but for the older kids they get the longer answers and then eventually after all these stories using this technique. I'm now able to teach them how to use the past tense using the same stories they love it. The only thing is I wish they had a projector that would have been awesome but I have to work with what I have. I do this for music science and story time and the kids love it. This was before I came across your KZfaq channel. After 2 years of teaching my kids at my kindergarten their graduating in July and I'm looking for a new job and the only one I can find is a school that is quiet good but they don't use any kind of media in the kindergarten classes. That's no problem but they don't even have books. Nothing for grammar pronunciation phonics math so I'm trying to relearn how to teach again. I've been in Taiwan for 16 years

Hi, thanks for watching! As I mentioned in the video, I would try and find ways to involve the students in the story telling process. If they have a higher level you can ask higher-level comprehension questions, like "what do you think will happen?" or "What if..." questions. I. would also make sure that they are able o understand the story. you are reading. If they are bored, it's possible the book level is too high or too low. I hope that helps!

Excellent, would be interested in knowing how you teach the inside of the book, where the sentances are. Ie: where the sentances are by using your finger and hand gestures. I saw the book cover and the back, as well as the 6 ducks introduced, but without too much depth. Most TA's and schools I've experienced ask students to finger read.
@MooncakeEnglish
@MooncakeEnglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, thanks for watching! It would really depend on the age group. This video was directed more towards very young learners. But, if have students that are just starting to read, then I might have a class designated pointer that I would use when reading. I would let students know that they can also use a pointer when they read and that if they don't have a pointer they can use their fingers. The pointers help students to read the words rather than memorize or guess and skip ahead. If you have access to digital books and a projector, you can have the story and words bigger for all to see. You can then have students come to the front and find specific words after reading a sentence. This can help with sight word recognition. With older or higher level students I would also ask questions about the pictures of the book. What can they see, what do they think is happening, etc. I think ask if they can see any words that might link to the pictures. This is helping students to 'decode' the story and understand that the words and pictures both tell a story. I hope those ideas help 😊

Hi Sara, thanks for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! I think for the first lesson I would focus on keeping the students attention and letting them get to know you. If possible I would start with a subject that they are familiar with so that they get a "oh I can do this" feeling when learning online. I also highly recommend teaching some easy attention grabbers to help keep their attention. For example... Rolly polly, rolly polly, rolly polly UP Rolly polly, rolly polly, rolly polly DOWN Rolly polly, rolly polly, rolly polly OUT Rolly polly, rolly polly, rolly polly IN That will also help keep their attention. I hope that helps 😊

Thanks Jemma.. really helpful.. I have a question, After reading I always ask them to find the words begin with letters I want but I still don't know what to say either 1. find words begin with letter A and B! Or 2. Find words begin with letters A and B! I always go with number one.. the letter comes without ending -s.. but I am not sure... I'm afraid I make mistakes.. hehe.. could u please tell me the right ?

Hi We Try, thanks for watching! That's another great activity for young readers thanks for sharing. I would say something like, "Can you find a word beginning with the letter A or B". I hope that helps 😊

Thank you for this helpful video! Can I ask you a question? My students keep chanting: 'we don't understand' and "Speak Chinese!" in Chinese 🤣What can I do about that?

Hi Mariia, thanks for watching! This book was at the school I work for. Possibly imported? I’m surprised Taobao doesn’t have them though! 🤔

You probably have to get them directly from National Geographic-welcome to our world.

where can I get those books for kids?

Hi Esra, thanks for watching! I believe those books are National Geographic, it would depend on where you are living. The book itself doesn't have to be that big for the ideas to work, but of course big books are nice for very young students.

Helpful. I had some problems last week to tell a story through meet presentation. I just had the story in digital and was difficult, because I couldnt see the students and they couldn't see me so we lost engagement. Has everyone some tips? I gonna try again sooner with a tablet as a book in front of my laptop screen 🤞 Thanks for all your videos. Cheersx

Hi Claudia, I also find that digital books can be a bit trickier! You could try something similar though, like having the class pretend they are robots turning the page by pressing a button on their wrist?
