This is soooooo helpful, I really need to work on my Ukrainian, because I have some serious soorjik going on. Funny thing: i'm german and thought about the "Bach" sound as you descriped it correctly like it sounds in german. But english speaking persons most pronounce it "bak"
@sapphoenixthefirebird5063

The funny thing is that some English dialects actually do pronounce "Bach" with a /x/ (Ach-laut). In fact, the example word for /x/ in English is "loch". Many German words with a "ch" correspond to English words with a silent "gh". Nacht - night Andacht - thought durch - through etc.

Thank you so much for the super polished video. I so appreciate all the vocabulary. It’s interesting to compare to my strongest Slavic language, Български език, and also to Русский язык. Some Український words are totally different from Български, например, “мова” versus “език”, whereas the Русский «язык» is very similar to the Български. But man oh man!! I cannot detect the difference between «х» and «г» at all! That’s going to be really tricky for me! Thank you, again!!

Greetings, I really appreciate your time and effort in producing these videos. I started learning the Ukrainian language about four months ago. I'm an Afrikaans / English native speaker. Phonetics is exactly like as in Afrikaans. Alphabet, we have 21 letters which is included in yours except we have the rest of the letters in diftonge, i.e., sounds. You have a few letters, not in Afrikaans alphabet but noted in the Dutch alphabet. The cases are a challenge and I'm focusing on cases and conjugations for the moment. Once again thank you.

So, х is like the ch in loch and h in house. Г is soft like hood. Г as a soft g makes sense because in my accent at least hood and good are practically the same. It doesn’t help that every translater has г as g even when set to Ukrainian. Duolingo doesn’t cover words with ґ saying they are too rare, but tree juice (sap) is important, maple and birch syrup! They also don’t have the simple form for future tense, which sounds quite nice. Apparently words with ґ originate from Lviv or Galicia, according to Quora. Your videos are so informative, thank you.

I learned a few words while in Iraq serving with the Georgian Commando's, and the Iraq SF Tiger Brigade. It's amazing how Ukranian bridges between Russian, Arabic, and I forget what else. My grandmother was told to not learn her native language since her mother and father felt that English was the best way to go in order to have a good life here in America. They spoke Ukranian till they passed away. When Ukraine defeats Russia I hope I can come and see my Grandmother, and her families homeland. "The Bread Basket" as she called it.

That corresponds with my intuition (I'm Polish, we just have one version of "h"). I'd say "х" is the "normal" "h" sound, the one I use in both Polish and English (perhaps incorrectly!), while "г" is produced in the glottis and it's voiced and generally "stronger" sounding. I hope a Ukrainian will comment and confirm/contradict this!

Examples for "г" are not appropriate. There is no difference between "good" / "gate" and "hat" / "house" in English. Although sound "г" ("ɦ") may be found as variation for "h" in some English dialects, it is not common sound in this language. If you are confused, please visit IPA page for Ukrainian on wiki and IPA chart website for correct proninciation. IPA is very usefull for learning any language, so I highly recommend it.

There's no difference in American or British English between how the "g" is pronounced in "gate", "good", and "gaga". There is basically no soft "g" in English. The Spanish "g" comes closer to the Ukrainian "Γ" than the English "g". For a Greek-speaker, the difference is between "γ", "γκ" or "γγ", and "χ".

@@belindabackman707 I am not a native speaker nor do I speak the language, but it is my understanding that the letter 'X' is supposed to be somewhat like a rough kh, and the tongue is supposed to be towards the back part of the roof of the mouth (i.e. the soft palate in the back of the throat). The second one is supposed to be a breathy voiced 'h'. The vocal cords are loosely vibrating and there is more air than there is voice in it. But again, there are different dialects of Ukrainian, so the pronunciations might be different. I often hear the pronunciations are different even among speakers in the same country. Again, I think the X (kh) and Г (h) sound similar, but the former is more done in the upper back of the mouth, while the latter is done more toward the lower part of the throat/larynx, but the vocal cords are loosely vibrating, if that makes sense.

I've always had trouble with the words for cold and hungry. They literally sound the same to me. I can distinguish no difference. The example words you used also didn't make a lot of sense to me as the h and g is said the same in all of those words. When listening to other words, I can sometimes hear a bit of a difference between these letters.

for me (as probably for most other German speaking persons): 'х' sounds in a lot of examples like in the German word Bach, 'г' like in the name 'Hans', and 'ґ ' like in German 'Gans'. For my ears 'г' doesn't sound like in 'good' at all, not even similar, whereas in Innas examples between 'cold' and 'hungry' I almost can´t hear any difference.
@Jefflightning1291
@Jefflightning1291 Жыл бұрын
To me, I always thought that the letter 'x' is like a rough velar sound while the second letter, 'г', is a breathy voiced 'h', sometimes called a 'voiced h'. Neither sound is native to English, at least not here in the United States, and the h in English is typically voiceless. I am not a native speaker, but to me, for the first one, I would say it is like the word Bach, although 'x' is more commonly romanized as kh in Ukrainian. The second one is not a native sound in English, but it sounds somewhat like the h in ahead, and sometimes the h might be voiced between vowels, although it would probably be considered an allophone. By breathy voiced 'h', the vocal cords are loosely vibrating. It's more air escaping than it is the vocal cords moving. It's not really a voiced sound like you would see in other consonants. The third one, (ґ) is like the word go or get, but as far as I know, there are not many native words in Ukrainian that begin with that. That's how I understood it.
