I would never had tackled this project, untill I stumbled upon these videos! Just rebuilt myT176 out of my 1984 CJ7 304cu, 2 of the shift keys were missing in my 3-4 synchronizer, they were in there but not where they were suppose to be! On the magnet in the bottom and broke in half, rebuild went flawlessly thanks to you! Thanks so much

Thank you so much for these two videos and the ones for the Dana 300! Very clear and well done! Having them as reference has given me enough confidence to start rebuilding both. I do have a question. The output shaft of the transmission is showing some wear on the drive side of the splines. The wear is less than the thickness of a fingernail, maybe half that, but is clearly visible and can be felt. How can I tell if this is too much and I need a new shaft?

Where can I buy new input and output shafts? I made the mistake of taking the unit to a transmission shop I was unfamiliar with and this guy melted the bearing onto the input shaft, so now the bearing is stuck on the input, which was removed. I'm picking it up from him tomorrow with output shaft and bearing still attached, although he melted that bearing onto that shaft as well. I should've just bought the puller assembly.

I have one of these in my 1985 F-150 but it isn't a T176. It is a T170FT-RTS 4-speed overdrive. The T176 was a Jeep transmission only though. Ford had different versions. Also not just the Broncos had them. F-150s and 250s with the 300, 302, and 351 (the 351 versions had a taller first, second, and overdrive gear and are very rare)

Amazing videos, thank you so much. One question - what is the preferred way to clean the gears/case? I've watched you mention blasting in your other videos but what should the shadetree/basement folks be doing to make sure we don't rust up our gearset?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 3 жыл бұрын
Well with gears, I don't blast them unless they do have rust. When I do they are glass beaded. Cases are subjective to the type of look you are going for . Any gears should be coated with an oil or wrapped in a rust inhibiting paper afterwards.

Im looking to see what's going on with my t170 in my e150 van. The input shaft has play up, down, side, to side, but in and out is perfect. Im thinking it's the imput bearing. Did you have bearing noise? Some units have a natural looseness to them. They are not super tight. The pilot pushing in the crank supports the input shaft. You can usually pop off the front bearing retainer and with a good high-powered flashlight look at the bearing races and look for pits
@8.2deck
@8.2deck 4 ай бұрын
@GearBoxVideo no everything sounded ok. I noticed it when I was replacing the clutch. I wasn't sure if it was normal on those or not. At first, I wasn't worried about it because I figured the pilot bushing would hold it in place, but I wasn't sure if the rear part of the input would have enough support. I'll probably pull the retainer and check it out, but it's probably ok if they're not the tightest to begin with. Thanks for the response

Paul, great videos. You are my go-to-guy. My T-176 pops out of 2nd gear. I pulled it apart and found the 1-2 shift fork is worn and the 1-2 synchro hub seems a little sloppy when engaged on the 2nd speed gear. When the 1-2 hub is engaged on 2nd gear, should there be any play in the outer hub where the 1-2 shift fork sits? Or should that 1-2 synchro hub be rock solid?

Maybe even make a video on the theme of after the job is done products. Like cleaning the shop, your tools or even your gloves. What works, and what's cheep and effective. I've heard kerosene is suppose to be good, but it's very flammable. Do you wan't to clean your bench with it? Just a thought.

@@GearBoxVideo First, thanks for a great video. I followed it to the letter, but my transmission pops out of 3rd gear too. I purchased a new top. Are you staying the 3-4 shift fork could be the problem. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to pull it again. thanks.

@@GearBoxVideo In desperation, I removed the top, placed the transmission in 3rd gear and it drives fine without popping out of gear. I put the top back on and it still will not stay in 3rd. My last bugging question, is the fact that it drives fine in 3rd limit the issue to something in the top cover or could I have screwed up something else. thanks again for your help.

i have watched this video a few times and also researched a bit online, but cant seem to find out how to remove the shifter housing from an SROD and take it apart, any advice or links maybe?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 4 жыл бұрын
An srod had a side mount shifter in a turret. Offset lever has a roll pin you punch thru and unbolt the turret. Top cover assemblies sometimes need to be put in reverse.

The video is pretty straight forward. Perhaps a rail is upside down or 180 out, which will cause the interlocks to get out of place. Sorry but I'm booked solid right now

Paul....I have a 1980 CJ 7 with a 4 speed manual that started popping out of gear on downshift right when I picked it up new. I sold it quite a few years ago....but now have a chance to “re-acquire” it. I know that Tran still pops out of gear. Can I fix it?

Snap On is a great tool company but their sales method is antiquated. I cannot depend on drivers that never show up with a truck. It was a good concept 30 years ago but doesn't work today. Plus they are overpriced.
