This is a long video and I tried to make it as detailed as possible. There are some sections about HVDA conversions you can skip over. Please also understand that a video like this takes at least 10 hours to shoot, adjust lighting, color correct and get the right angles to make points clear to the viewer. IT'S FREE. In return if you can subscribe that would be awesome and much appreciated. My Facebook page redirect is www.transmissionbook.com If a transmission is video worthy usually the owner has time on his project because the transmission will be in the shop for a few months. This is a full time business, not a hobby. I manufacture/ build new transmissions and parts. I get a great deal of comments that I delete when a person says "do a Corvette ZF 6 speed video" or something similar. I don't have access to every transmission and I'm not about to purchase a transmission because someone demands I do a free video for them. That's rude. If you are interested in working on doing a video for a particular transmission contact me . My info is in this channel's about section. Shift Fast, Paul

For the people who think installing sealed bearings in manual transmission is wrong. I suggest you learn about "non contacting sealed bearings" All of my endurance boxes run on these types of bearings for over a decade with zero failures.

I appreciate the videos that you make no matter what make/model transmission you rebuild. It gives an insight on knowledge that one can use to rebuild their own or what goes into rebuilding a transmission. I rebuilt my first transmission about 4 years ago. Watching your videos helped me gain the confidence in understanding the steps to taking these things apart. I was working on an L-series Toyota pickup transmission (L52 transmission from a 1982-1983 Toyota Pickup 4wd). I have used these rebuild kits that you've mentioned in this video (same bearing manufacture as seen in the video). Didn't know that there can be some defects in the kits for the synchros until you mentioned it in this video. Could be a possibility that when I did put the L52 back together, that shifting into gears didn't feel smooth (specifically 3rd gear, after some time it did feel okay). New components that went into that transmission were bearings, synchros, keys and springs, c-clips, gaskets and seals. Looking forward into taking apart this Toyota R151F turbo transmission I currently have as it whines like it has straight cut gears. Thanks for another great vid Paul! Keep bangin' those gears through the windshield!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this. The warped rings in the kit will exhibit the same problem you were having. As the rings start to seat in they will grab the gear and synchronize better.

Thanks to varies other videos and especially yours I was able to completely take apart piece by piece and reassemble a transmission by myself. It really isn’t as bad as people think as long as your organized and take the time to actually understand how each piece works. It’s just the little details that can be skipped or forgotten that can cause huge issues. And a month ago I didn’t even know how a manual transmission works.

I don't have a W58, and unlike a lot of the people in the comments, I don't have a question about how to solve problems with a transmission that I have, I just come here because i love how technical this channel is, and how detailed you are in all your work, even going so far as to give extra tips in reassembly etc. where a lot of other guys in different fields would never give away tips for free. Thanks so much for all your videos, by far and away the best channel to see how all these transmissions work, and seeing how to disassemble and reassemble, and seeing how each part interacts and what wear etc. to look for. Thanks from Australia :)

I like to thank you mr gearbox man.Watching your videos has really helped me rebuild my own gearbox and others. I have rebuild two boxes, a late 80s T5 nwc and a 95 toyota hilux here in new zealand. Just by watching your videos thank you so much. I am a certified mechanic but never worked on gearboxes because here in NZ it is a specailized trade. In all the Work Shops iv worked in, if their was a problem with the transmission, we just removed it from the car and send it away to get the work done. Thanks to you im learning how to do manual gearboxes and learning something new at the same time cheers

THANK YOU so much! I must have just watched this video and part 1 at least 20 times while rebuilding my late model W58 (1993-1998) transmission. The fit on mine was even tighter than this one, and there were some minute differences like double-cone synchros on some of the gears. The project took me two weeks of nights and weekends type tinkering, waiting on parts, and struggle bus dilemmas like having to wait on buddies to use their press. If it wasn't for your video I don't know if I would have ever been able to finish this project, but now I feel like an expert on the W58! Being a performance auto technician by trade, I have never really dug this far into the guts of a manual transmission and it was a really educational experience for me!

Mr. Paul, I just want to say thank you so much for putting these videos together. I could not have done my FIRST EVER manual trans. rebuild on my Toyota w56c trans without you. I am a Toyota 4wd lover that had a smoked input shaft bearing. Common with these trans I think? I been nursing it along for the last 50k miles = louder than you can even imagine. I consider myself a pretty experienced hobby mechanic but your video was simply the best resource I could have ever stumbled upon. I have a press and a couple pullers, one more trip to harbor freight for a big bearing puller (like the biggest one you used on the press) and I was in business. I mean this as the highest form of compliment when I say: you sir, are the Bob Ross(the famous painter on PBS) of transmissions. Simply the best, detailed and all encompassing source of info I could have hoped for. I was gonna go buy a manual, but I didn't have to becuase YOU are better that the book and even included torque values, bonus! Man.. keep doing what your doing. I would love to buy you a drink and a steak dinner if I could. Let me know if you are even in Oregon. Rock steady amigo. Thank you.

@@GearBoxVideo Classic Ross, well said. The trans seems to working quite nicely after about a 100 miles.. Only one issue that rears its head now and then. upshifting from 3rd to 4th: Doesn't seem like the shift ring wants to fully engage over the gear. like there is not enough throw in the fork. when i let the clutch out the gear spins and i get a grind. Hard to say if it's just the cheapo Sta-lube GL4 I am using for break in or something else. Seems like i has something to do with the gear spining at the 1:1 ratio? every other gear engagement feels great. Up and down shifting. Any thoughts?

I have a good W58 attached to a complete 22R block with a 20R head I'm selling after my 80 truck was totaled. I could not have been running better when it was hit. The tranny has a fresh front seal, Engine has a new clutch, new head gasket, and valve seals and I removed the head shim put in place to keep the compression down back in 1987 when the 22R was built. I can feel the compression increase. This is a California truck. It passed CARB smog recently with results that were half of the average. Not half of Max, half of the average. I'd like to sell the whole kit'n caboodle to some lucky hobbyist that can pick it up in Southern California. Available May 5 2023. Make me an offer. I'll send pics after it's out of the truck. I loved the video. I miss my truck.

I make helical close ratio kits for these units. 11 new parts. I remove syncro drives from good used gears and press on to my new gears. With physically wider gears, closer ratios these boxes are very very strong. We have one that runs 510 rwd hp and 8300rpm. Don't grind my gears because of the expense and customers wouldn't buy them. Use best gear steel i can buy. These toyota gearboxes have a very nice syncro feel and when they are turned into a close box, they are so fast without crunching. Good video. I have tooling I have made. I use the shoulder just ahead of 5th gear spline and have a "C"plate that hooks behind it and use a porta power ram setup to install. I also use the same setup to push the big reverse gear on. Great video.

26:22 I find it easier to throw the whole mainshaft in, with input shaft and then the cluster gear afterwards without the centre bearing on it. After the cluster gear is in tap the bearing race with the snap ring in it from 5th gear side at the same time. It saves juggling both the mainshaft and cluster gear at the same time. Love the videos! I hope this helped in some way. Keep it up

The maindrive and output press fits so you can probably heat the inner ring up of the bearing and slide it in but I wouldn't be tapping these bearings on while the main shaft is in place you could ruin the input shaft synchronizer ring. I see what you mean about the lower cluster bearing but since that lower bearing is a split bearing with a nylon cage you risk damaging the cage.

Since I was having troubles with mine I sent it off the David Kee...and got it back and installed and drove the car home from the shop and it worked...thank goodness. I had the grinding issue with the 3-2 downshift. You said send it to you but that was after it had been shipped to Kee. Would have loved to have to go through it. Next time if there is a next time. I second your request. I just need to replace the input shaft on my W59. I watched the video carefully and think there is still a lot of disassembly. Looks like both the main and countershaft need to move forward enough to spread them apart. But there's a lot of parts keeping that from happing easily.
@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 2 жыл бұрын
Taking another look I see the input shaft and the 4th speed gear are one and what is keeping them from being removed is the 4th gear and bearing on the countershaft. So, if I can use a puller behind the 4th counter gear to pull the gear and bearing off, then the input shaft will simply slip off. Then I need to figure out how to press the counter gear and bearing back on the countershaft. More to come.

wonderful... subbed! was waiting for this just to see how the gears are installed as I plan to assemble a hyundai M5BF2 soon... it's all new parts including case sections, input/output shafts, gears, synchros, forks, hubs etc., seeing this makes me excited to put it all together... I plan to polish the case inside out instead of coating with Teflon but I'll probably have the gears treated like you mentioned in the NASCAR prepped gearbox video... many thanks!

Fantastic video Paul, I rebuilt my W59 using this tutorial as a reference. Cobra Transmission is an xln’t source for Input/4th Gear & Counter Shafts. Their staff is very help & responsive thru email for any questions!

I have to rebuild my w59 & 1st gear is ruined. Do you know if the 1st gear is replaceable on the input shaft or is it part of the shaft itself. Same question regarding the 1st gear on the counter shaft.

Hey. Ur in my opinion are one of the most knowledgeable people on transmissions. Im going to have to probably rebuild my R150f tranny and was wondering if this video would be good to go by? Cause they are similar transmissions. Also my tranny is having problems going in first gear before its really warmed up. Now its getting hard to go into second gear and third. But after driving for an hour it goes into gear just fine. Also if the truck isnt running,it goes into gear just fine. I was thinking it was the synchros, but i have no problem shifting into gear while moving. I heard that a bad pilot bearing that sticks, could be the culprit. Which sounds likely.

Thanks for the reply. Cause i know you have to be a busy guy. Usually the guys with knowledge are. Well as of yesterday,my transmission started making a rattling sound. It does it in neutral, and also in 1st 2nd 3rd 5th. I definitely sounds like a bearing. It doesn't do it in 4th. I read that if it doesn't do it in 4th than its probably the counter shaft bearings, cause 4 th gear is the 1:1 and the counter shaft doesn't turn. On this r150f tranny. Luckily, my buddy has a extra tranny that i am fixing to swap out. I work 90 miles from where i live and didn't want to take the chance on making it worse or getting stuck on the side of the road so i called in and took off, and i am fixing to swap it out. But i am going to have to rebuild mine and give his back or trade him or whatever. Times are tuff and i will have to rebuild the tranny myself. I have another friend that has presses and bearing pullers and everything i think ill need. Is there any specific tools that you think i might need? Also what rebuild kit would you use ? Hopefully its just bearings and seals and thats all ill need cause after looking on the internet i can get a bearing and seal kit for around 200 . From Cobra transmissions. Ive never done this and so im not sure on who to order from. Where do you usually get your parts from? I know i need to use oem bearings and parts from what everyone says,so thats what i looked for. And it will be a couple of weeks before i can order anything,and i want to disassemble it before i start ordering anything. So just tell ur thoughts on who you get ur parts from or reliable people to order from, and any advice you might have for a first timer on rebuilding the r150f. Thank you for your time.

We went to press the input shaft bearing off and the end of the shaft shattered, Lexus does make replacements, it comes with an input shaft and counter shaft for about 300 bucks. BK162WS doesnt come with the correct input shaft bearing but those are also available from Lexus. The synchros were all incorrect for it too but ours, like yours, were good.

Never press directly on the pilot section. always use a sleeve. You have to monitor the press, especially if it is electric. I try to get parts direct from Toyota or Lexus. The kits are garbage.

I am thankful that you post these videos Paul. Eats into your free time, thanks for doing it quality information. However i do hope the Chef is not a regular dining companion around 12, oh the crap i used to get at work about the chef. Over the winter i need to pull the boneyard engine in my s 10 it is ready to die, will do the t 5 properly this time and the transfer case. Watching your T 5 video shamed me, i really was clueless in what i was doing - not anymore. Going to try and fit a GM 3.8 in the engine bay if i can make the T 5 and the 3.8 play together. 2.8 is a joke and the 4.3 drinks too much but i may have no choice. Did the grand nationals ever use a T 5 ? I can not recall if they did there might be some hope for the combo if they did. Something makes me think they were autos only. Have a good Paul

I just watched this series for the third time. I learn something new each time. I have a 1982 Toyota Pickup (22R) RWD with a W50 that pops out of fifth gear. I've completely replaced the shifter, bushings, and seat with all new parts, but that didn't fix the problem. Everything else works great. It shifts smoothly, no noise, no leaks, it just pops out of fifth. It snaps into gear when shifting and then, usually after several minutes, pops out - sometimes under load, sometimes when decelerating. I'm wondering if there's a problem with the gear and/or the slider? I don't want to tear it down, but I think I'm going to have to. What should I be looking for when I'm in there? Thanks again for putting these videos together, and for taking the time to show and tell everything so clearly.

@@GearBoxVideo Thanks for your prompt response! I was suspecting something like that. Well, your video series has given me the confidence to know I can tear it down and put it back together. Now I just need the parts. I've found a few sources for rebuild kits, but I haven't been able to scare up the actual gears. I want to be prepared for worst case before I start. Do you have any ideas of where I might source fifth gear for a W50? And thanks again!

That was the best video I have ever seen on one of these.. thank you so much. Very surprised you didn’t bench test the gears before putting casing back on.?
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 3 жыл бұрын
You can't bench test the gear train because the case maintains the center to center clearance. So your comment makes zero sense.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 3 жыл бұрын
We don't allow video links here and again... the guy in the video is accomplishing nothing. Spacing and shift rail alignment are constrained by the cases. Ends of the rails are held by the cases, shafts are held by the cases. So again the guy is accomplishing nothing other than making sure he has everything back in the proper place which if you know what your are doing this is not needed. I've done over 100 of these type of builds in 40 years of business. Never an issue. Also you don't have to check that the sliders and hubs shift when it's all assembled. That should be done before you assemble the gear train. Shifting the assemblies with no rails in place as in the video can also cause the assembly to over shift and cause the struts to pop out. Especially on the 3-4 since the input is not held in place. So again this is meaningless and a poor way of checking your work and can also cause issues and a reason why I don't do this.

@chrischristenson

As Paul suggests, start it as a hobby and you may want to hook up with a few junk/recycling yards in your area. See if you can get their returned transmissions, or ones with outside physical damage, that they can't sell. You can then repair them, and sell them back to the yards or sell them on the Craig's List in your area.

Pete Millen It's wonderful to see you working on a 5 speed that goes into a British car. All of those old 4 speeds need this conversion for American highways. I own a 1971 Lotus Elan that really needs a 5 speed and wondered if you had ever done a conversion for one and had any recommendations for me.
