Loved seeing her all fluffed up! There was something about her "Feed Me" screech that sounded like she wasn't the least bit unsure that her needs would be met by her person. Very interesting video. Thanks.

I've never heard barn owls make that chirping noise before. Your owl definitely loves you very much! I have a question though. Most of the time fluffed feathers is a sign of aggression. I've seen most owls, including barn owls, fluff themselves up when they feel threatened as a way to look larger and more intimidating. Could you elaborate more on the difference here and why they fluff their feathers up both when they're relaxed and when they're scared? As for the wiggling, my understanding was that they do that to get a better mental image of the surrounding area using their hearing. Why do they wiggle when they're pleased? Also.. no comment on the "they narrow their eyes and look like a chinese owl"
@GalaxyGirl-em1rm6 жыл бұрын
They also wiggle when they hear music.
@georgerobins41106 жыл бұрын
I am by no means an expert, but I think that owls might have multiple reactions to fear, depending on if they're being dominant or submissive. They probably have regular poofy feathers when relaxed, extra poofy feathers when irritated, and flat feathers when being submissive. That's my guess anyway.
@becc43336 жыл бұрын
As someone who's worked with all kinds of birds, the relaxed and aggressive indications are universal in most bird species. The difference between the fluffing when agitated and fluffing when relaxed is Agitation; the bird will fluff up rear neck and chest feathers, and spread their fluffed up wing feathers and start hissing or screeching and leaning forward, and sometimes swaying in a hostile manner. Relaxed; the bird will completely fluff up all feathers on their body in order to create a "feather jacket" and relax until they're napping. It's the human equivalent of us laying down and curling up with a blanket, as opposed to trying to make themselves appear larger and more intimidating.
@Wingedshadowwolf6 жыл бұрын
Rebecca Chiptune Chickens do that too.
@zanderhornek51326 жыл бұрын
mata schmata I don't know a lot with owls but when it comes with parrots and birds when happy they shale kinda like a dog to get fluffed up but when they are unhappy or feel threatoned their feathers will just come up without fluffing up and they will seem to be focused or focused on the think they feel threatened about, most of the time they also pace when feeling like that yet when they are comfortable they sit where they are
@organickevinlondon Жыл бұрын
Barn Owls are virtually silent in flight, this is because the leading edges of their main flight feathers are a bit fluffy, which in turn helps to break up the air in front of it as it flies, so it causes very little air disturbance and noise associated with that, as it's excellent at gliding too, it doesn't need to flap its wings much to fly, it can't move its eyeballs either, but it can manage a 270 degree turn of its head, the round shape of its face and its white colour, help to reflect as much light as possible, into its eyes, so it can see in virtually zero light, Barn Owls have also got, incredible hearing too, its ears are asymmetric one slightly higher than the other, so it doesn't have to move its head, to locate its prey, , the shape of its face, focusses sound waves to its ears, as far as birds go, Barn Owls are pretty "high tech".

Very nicely done, and super informative. And really, is there anything cuter than a happy owl? I don't think so.

I think maybe she was just trying to focus on something because her head bobbed a little. But I don’t know for sure. Have you seen this frown face she’s doing? I live also that sweet little chip she does on seeing you. I bet she’s really soft. I’ve always lived watching any bird fluff up it makes them look adorable. Why aren’t human babies this lovely?
