This is a big one. I'm giving all my audio secrets away! For over a year, the most requested topic for me to talk about is audio. Everyone apparently wants to know how I approach recording audio for a wedding film, the exact gear that I use to record the wedding notes, ceremony, and toasts, and how I make everything sound great. Well today is the day that I reveal it all! Strap in for almost thirty minutes of me covering all facets of recording audio for wedding films.
In this video I will cover:
- Why audio is such a big deal for you and your audience.
- The exact recorders, microphones, cables, batteries, and accessories that I use throughout the entire wedding day.
- Who and what I record during the wedding ceremony.
- All the ways to plug into a sound board.
- How to handle DJs that won't let you plug into their sound board.
- A foolproof backup that Guarantees(!) that you will record high quality toasts audio.
Below is a full list of the Audio Equipment that I use. You can see this entire list with images and links at: kit.co/whoismatt/audio-gear-f...

Seriously dude, I DON'T want to sound like the fanboy-turning-stalker kind of person but I don't think you actually understand how madly good you are at this. I watch tons of videos about filming technique and the way you describe it is second to none. I'd be willing to bet $100 that you surpass 100K subs before end of summer. And that guy across the street right now - that's NOT me. Nope. Totally someone else.

Hey Matt while I'm very knowledgeable with video gear, music instruments, eq, etc... I am not very knowledgeable in the film audio department. I need to buy a mic for the company I'm working for, and I was thinking of getting the tascam dr10l since everyone recommends it, but should I be concerned that I can't monitor audio? I need something for moving subjects and for speakers who don't want a boom pole in their face. But I've never used a lav mic before and the idea of not monitoring to see if the audio is catching shirt noise, kind of worries me. Should I buy this mic for my needs and is monitoring something I should be concerned about?

Matt you are the bomb!! Thanks for being so generous and sharing such valuable information. It is a life saver and I think you've helped out a ton of people! It can be kind of intimidating recording audio from the mixer and if you ever get the chance it would be pretty amazing if you did a video showing us a scenario where you get a line out from the mixer, where you can typically find the tape out or Aux send outputs on a mixer and how you work with the DJ to test the audio levels and all that good stuff! I think this is something most of us struggle with at the beginning and I don't think there are too many, if any videos out there that actually show us a visual of how it's done. Thanks again :)

+Kiri Vawdrey thanks so much Kiri! A lot of this will come from talking to the DJ. Every sound board is different but if they are a good dj they should know where the recording out rca jacks are etc that you can plug into.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos kind sir. I recently switched from Photographing weddings to filming them. That being said, it's been a huge learning curve for me and with all these people on KZfaq lacking consistency and really great teaching skills, it was getting scary. You are the second man (after myself) who found that the old olympus voice recorders are just perfect enough for weddings! They are so good for the church and other ceremonies. I actually have 4 of them DS-30, VN-711PC and 2x WS-811 and I bought them all on eBay (used). They are really amazing if you are looking for a low budget way to record a quality sound - good enough for a wedding.

EXCELLENT content. I had a wedding where I rolled up to the dj hoping to take a feed off of his board during ceremony but he was using some fossil of a board. Only had stereo outs which gave super dirty signal, had to mess around splitting it and barely got set up in time. His wireless mics were also old and had constant interference. Basically an audio nightmare so thanks again for this excellent rundown.

Lol that old h4n, I stopped using mine. You forgot to mention one of the biggest drawbacks is that it takes forever to turn on. Man, your setup is so really close to mine, it's like if you were talking about my gear and technics except me I'm using my c100 for statics and for XLR inputs. great videos man keep it going! !

Haha you're absolutely right. I think I got used to the longer startup time. I find that using a smaller SD card helps with the startup time too (32GB or less). Glad other people have similar setup to me! :)

Hey Matt, Look into a vampire clip for the bride, they are super small and will hook just inside of the dress so the capsule is peaking out the top. Quick to put on, invisible and reliable. They're pretty sharp so you gotta watch out though! PS can I send you a wedding video to review? haha Seriously tho.

+Thom Varey thanks so much Thom! I'll check this out :D Did you check out my consulting page at whoismatt.com/consulting ? I know it costs money, but I put a ton of time into my critiques, take notes etc, then we talk about how you can improve for an hour. :)

@@whoismatt Hey matt would you ever use a shotgun mic like the sennheiser 416 if you had one? or are lav mics better still for weddings?

@@wcsdiaries I prefer lav mics. Shotgun mics are fine on camera for closeup audio

Question- what do you use to sync up the numerous audio sources? I use FCP X to edit my videos and want to use multiple lav MIcs hooked up, each, to their own ZOOM H1. Great content. Thanks for creating.

The Olympus voice recorders that you were originally buying but are not made anymore are available on ebay, and you will pay, far, far less than a new recorder, and the recorder you get will likely be "like new" or actually new in an unopened package. I buy Sony voice recorders that were $80 - $125 new for only $15 from ebay. Ebay is our friend. But I've been looking for voice recorders that record in .wav format. I am glad to hear the ones you use do this.
