Tutorial on how to use a Universal Audio Apollo audio interface to record vocals. I use a UAD Apollo x4 and Logic Pro X as my DAW, but this tutorial is applicable to all the other Apollo interfaces and other DAWs. We will dive deep into how to use the Apollo hardware, the UAD Console application, how to use UAD unison preamps (my favorite is the Neve 1073) and how to route things properly between Console and a DAW.

One question though - I don't see any "virtual output" options under the I/O Assignments --> Output tabs in Logic. I only have numbered output pairs from 1-46. Any idea as to why this is?

The virtual output option needs to be enabled in console, and then it’ll show up in logic

Thank you for a clear and understandable video. I recently purchased the UAD X6. It is a different animal compared to my last interface. Guess I made a good choice. My DAW is Cubase 11. You were good a concise. I’m still unclear of a few things hoping you can help from time to time.

You can use control room in cubase to send your cue and it’s almost same as console sending with more features too.

Thank you for the clear, organized and concise tutorial, excellent job! As a quick backdrop, I’m using Apollo Twin connected to Apollo x6 with a MacBook Pro/Logic X and I’m having a hopefully simple solution issue: Similar to your illustration, my Unison pre is the Neve 1084, (with a Sprit Origin Mic). Even after mirroring your settings, I cannot get my mic monitor level loud enough without distorting input(yes, software monitoring in LPX is unchecked). Is there a solution other than turning down the mix of all instruments? Thanks in advance, Allan

How close to the mic are you singing? What peak levels are you seeing on the vocal channel?

@@Semyon_Music 6 to 10 inches away on average peak @ -6. Even with Consol fader all the way up, my vocal is too soft compared to music to adequately monitor. So I'll be zeroing out & rebuilding music rough mix. It seems The Consol fader doesn't really increase my monitor levels all that much and any significant increase in input levels beyond your suggestions in Neve preamp causes clipping. As a final thought, this particular song I did on my Presonus system in FL, Thought I could plop & play on my UA system here up north,, not so much Thanks again Allan

@@allandisimone9701 you will have to turn the music mix down, turn the headphone volume up until the vocal volume is good, and then adjust the music volume from there

so I noticed a lot of big studios will record the vocals into the daw running through an outboard compressor and preamp and it prints them onto the recording, is this smart to emulate this with the REC feature instead of monitor? Because I want to beef my vocals up pre - DAW the way that big artists do. I monitor using Pro Tools instead of console since i'm using a vocal chain that I have set up in there.

The only reason to record with rec instead of monitor is if you want to commit to a sound, but it’s not going to make a difference if you commit to a compressor during or after recording. The only time it makes a difference in UAD is when you use a plugin on the unison insert, such as a Neve preamp emulation

The way I do it with the X4 is I send a stereo out to my patch bay, route everything through there, and send a stereo in back to the X4

@@Semyon_Music you use patch but if you do the same thing in console is like to do cue or aux ? ( in your exemple the patch stereo is cue send, and stereo back is cue return or I don’t understand ? ) In the video you use console with cue to rec vocals on the daw, but if I want to directly rec on the daw without the console, how I do ? I ask that because where I am I got an x8, I want to use pedals effect to use it one sample on my daw, the routing is complicated to me, in my position if I need to use pedals what do you do ? ( sorry for my bad English I’m French ) [ personally I use my output 1 > pedals Input > pedals Output > ( reamp box but I don’t got one for the moment > Input line 1 in the back of the interface ( some ppl tell me to use hi z ) > use console and do cue ( cue 1 to output 1/2 ) > but right here I don’t know more Thanks man for your reply and advise

@@1eidji652 first, you should see if you need to use the hi-z input for the guitar. Next, you can route your outputs from your x8 in your daw to your pedals. The cues and virtual channels I have set up more for monitoring purposes

Thank you! How can I track wet(processed) and dry vocal signals using UAD Apollo? Is there a way to just soft patch it or do I need to Line Out/Physical patch or maybe use a splitter on the way in?

Is the processing happening with external hardware, with UAD plugins, or with 3rd party plugins in your DAW?

@@Semyon_Music Thank you for your response. I want to simultaneously record two signals in my DAW Logic. 1. Processed with UAD Unison + Inserts (wet), 2.Unprocessed signal going only through Unison Preamp and nothing else (dry). Nothing to do with verbs. The unprocessed signal is for safety only so that I may be able to change it later if required. I was wondering if there is a way to record them both by just soft patching within UAD console or maybe a physical patch. I am new to the UAD world. Thank you for the help. :) P.s I do have an RME Fireface as well but want to use the unison preamps.

I figured it out. While One channel can be recorded 'wet'. I can just record for example Aux 2 from UAD Console in my DAW 'dry/unprocessed'.

Let’s say you want to record compression going in, but only want to monitor Autotune. Would you place the UAD Autotune on a send and your LA2A on an insert?

Exactly, add the LA2A on an insert and Autotune on an AUX and change the headphone mix so that you're just hearing the AUX with autotune, but the raw track is being recorded in the background

It is the output of the headphone cue. On my Apollo x4, I have 2 headphone outputs so Cue 1 and Cue 2. I can choose what mix is played through each cue

I have one question. I use the Apollo Twin with Neumann TLM 49. Why I have to rise the mic gain to its maximum and load an pre amp and hit it Hard too, to reach - 20 dB (what is still quite) to hear myself on my headphones?

Can you do a video on managing DSP? I feel like I overload my system wayyy too easily. With just one delay/reverb and a few EQ/compressors I hit a wall even before it's time to record vocals.

I just went through that just recently . You have to disable every plug in that have in all your projects except for the one your'e currently working in obviously . Console is different than regular DAWS . It saves the DSP info . If you haven't done it yet . Your'e gonna be psyched. Also another move you can do is if I have a lead track for instance that your'e happy with . Copy it to a track and disable all the plug ins on the actual lead track and your starting fresh with DSP and can mix that lead track with the rest and even add a different set of Plug-Ins without it adding to what you had for DSP on that lead track . You can do it again and again if you want . You probably already figured this out being that your'e question was 3 months ago but if not . Happy to help!

Also DSP Paring which I just learned about 5 minutes ago. When it says u exceeded DSP resources and asks if you want to learn more . Select yes and watch it . You can take the Dsp from multiple channels to build a huge chain.

you'll have to turn off monitoring in Console and turn on monitoring in Logic to hear that vocal chain instead. If it's just FX, you can monitor through Console and route the FX through logic back through the Console virtual channels

Yes, do a demo of this please. I am a «nooby» on UA software and i try to do the same thing with LUNA and i don't see clearly the link between «console» and the DAW.

Think of console as your input monitoring area and where you set up your recording preferences, DAW is where you capture, save and edit. In your DAW, make sure you turn input monitoring off, select your input channel, and in console select your recording and monitoring preferences

You don't need to care about all of this. Console is built into LUNA and you don't need to route stuff around. Set up your Unison preamp, add compression and EQ (in the record slots if you want to print them, otherwise in the Insert slots) and set up a send to a bus with reverb. And that's it.

I can't get the same signal with the effects recorded in my logic pro x. I can hear the effects coming out of the UA console but it records a dry audio in logic. Any suggestions?

@@Semyon_Music so I just use analog. the first "mic 1". I put my compressor on there and my auto tune real time. I can turn off software monitoring in Logic and still hear my self thru the Apollo. but it doesn't sound as good and is more dull. maybe its ckuz I have more plugins in use in Logic. but sometimes I do feel like im hearing double. but there is no latency so it doesn't bother me. I just want to record my vocals as efficient as possible. im my own engineer. well learning engineer.
