Add limiter and gain it up until you 0db but check the meter isn't working too hard and distorts parts of the mix There is a function to record at -6db to -12db in the Tascam, id probably do that and increase it after in a DAW.

how does it work? I have a pioneer djm and am considering the h4n but if the attenuator isn't going to work well all around with it.... thanks in advance

Hey there! I just bought a new DR-40V2, but I can't get a proper sound out of it when trying to record a DJ set via LINE IN. The sound is not proper quality (not clean), it sound kind of waterish .. (I don't really know how to explain it). I tried recording from a Pioneer DJM 700 (rec out), a STANTON RM-3S (rec out) and directly from my cellphone with an AUX cable, but the problem with the sound is still the same. I guess there is maybe a problem either with the settings inside the device or wrong cables? Please let me know exactly what kind of settings and cables (balanced/unbalanced) you use. If you could help me out I would really appreciate it!

Have you since found you need an attenuator with the DJM 600 rec out to WAV recording on the dr40x? I've just bought the dr40x. Am I okay to just rely on the tascam in built limiter? Thank you

The 60D does look absolutely killer as an all-round recorder (I'd love one for shooting these videos), but as it has no built-in mics, it would be a lot more hassle for the particular application we're talking about here.

I might add another plus with this recorder... it is battery powered, but it can be powered via the USB cable it comes with. I've been powering it off the CDJ, and when disconnected it keeps recording off battery power. It's been perfect!

I have a DR-05 too, it's what I run my microphone into in all these videos! But yes, it can be a problem getting it to cope with line level. My suggestion would be to check out the -25db Fentronix attenuator I demoed in the live streaming video a few weeks ago on this channel. I originally bought that attenuator to use with my DR-05 to record my sets. It's cheap, they ship worldwide, and it will do the job nicely. Obviously the 05 is only a 2 channel recorder so you can't do crowd noise too, regardless.

Hey It mayb sounds weird but I tried an earphone In-Line Volume Control cable and it worked out pretty good for my DR-05. I Can adjust the level on the cable and it was a cheap solution for around 2,99 euro's. I hope it will help you out! Of course. Change the record mode settings and you can record the input only.

bert coertjens You can also go Old School and get an old VCR (Hi-Fi) and record your set. If you have a good one you'll be shocked and amazed at the sound. Some folks might clown on you so put it under the table (fugg em). If your VCR doesn't have level lights back off of your rec out from your mixer. You can add volume later but once you record a distorted set you can't take the volume back. Do Do in, Do Do out. Best part is up to 2 - 6 hrs record time depending on record speed and Hi-Fi video tape limits.

I use 1/4" jacks out of the aux send from DJM-750mk2 and it works fine. just turn the gain down to somewhere in the .5-.8 range, which is an option. Works fine.

Go into your recording settings and click external

The presented 4-channel option allows you to record seperately the signal (directly picked up) from your mixer and the crowd (with your music from PA) recorded with the internal mics on your recorder. At postproduction you can use now the mixer signal to minimize your music on the mic signal. Kinda like active noise canceling works. And than decide how much you wanna have your crowd heard on your mix ;-)

@@markyruss As decribed it at the post up there: you're using all 4 channels at the 4-channel-method. Two pairs of inputs at the same time: first pair directly pickking up from the mixing console (L+R = 2 Ch) AND the second pair records from the internal microphones (again: L+R = 2 Ch). That means you have the stereorecord from the mic's and the direct pickup. (Mic L+R) + (Mixer L+R) = 4 channel recording. The recorder (specially the Mic's) should be positioned the right way, in front of the DJ heading to the crowd, and if possible not directly within the monitors speaker range to reduce the music on the "crowd-recording" and any possible delays. The Pa should have been set up the right way too, means the speakers are aligned to the crowd and leveled up the right way. You can't record crowd without recording the music in the background. But you can use this music on that record "crowdrecord" to sync the both records (Mic's(= Crowd) and Mixer) together and use filters on the crowd recording to reduce music. Than you level the volume and stereo effect of the crowd and mix it onto your clean musicrecording. Violá! Kinda tricking, but works fine for me ;-)

Master out or Booth. Whichever out you use make sure the cable has either XLR or 1/4 ends to feed you dr-40.

Yes. These units are multitrack (4 capable) Don't arm the external mics and they won't record.
