How to Record Your MPC Into Ableton Live (2020 Update)

This video is an update to "How to Record Your MPC (Into Ableton Live)," a tutorial I put out in 2015. There were a few things I didn't talk about back then. In this update I share an easy tracking out process with Ableton Live 10. This method applies to any non-software based MPC (MPC 2000XL, MPC 1000, MPC 2500, MPC 500, MPC 4000, etc). For anyone who makes beats with many tracks, you can insert a blank bar at the begining of every track in the MPC with a kick programmed at the very start of the blank bar, then track out as normal but make sure the kicks line up perfectly, things like snares and off grid noises will always be lined up 100% without you having to readjust and second guess in Ableton. Then of course you just trim all the kicks off the start of the blank bar.

Btw, I wasn't trying to sound like I was disregarding your method, I just know that if I ever make linear (if that's what they're called) beats with scratch hooks etc I have an absolute nightmare of a time trying to track them out without a kick or 4 clicks to line up the start. Thanks for all the videos, I've enjoyed watching them over the years! Peace

Thanks for the tutorial! Would love for you to continue your MPC 1000 school, and go into more advanced lessons. Q-Links, Chord Programs, ARP Programs, etc. Also, how you customized your 1000, and how you build your MPC sound library, and organize it.

For track 3 you could let the metronome play for 2 or 4 times on the mpc, cut it at the last one in ableton, set that for start and then silence it. The snares will be placed at the right place then. ;)

or you could add 1 or 2 bars before the beat starts and only place one sound (like a hihat) right before the start then you can just line up the hihat

When I do it like its shown in the video I got the problem that the sound which is recorded in Ableton is so much different than the sound which comes out of my speakers when i play it with my MPC. Especially the kicks loose at lot of bass and the "warm" feeling. Both ways it goes trough the soundcard, so the problem must somehow be in the software. But i really tried everything, can someone help me out? I just want to record it like the MPC plays it. :D

Dope video! You don´t recommend recording all the beat at once to multiple tracks so you can play with the Track Mute?? You can record up to 6 tracks at the same time with the MPC 1000 to Ableton? (if your interface has at least 6 inputs right?) I want to do it that way because I find it´s not the same if I record everything separately and then re arrange it in Ableton, but I don´t know if I can do that with the free JJOS or I need the JJOS2XL in order to asign each track to a different output... Thanks in advance!

0:39 i know that sample!!! is from dusty loops, i remember that in particular because it had drum rolls so when I transition from scene to scene the transition would be smooth

Thank you so much for the video. I have a couple of questions I am hoping you can answer: (1) Will this apply to the Akai MPC 2000XL as well? And (2) If it does apply, is it necessary to have the 8 output expansion in the 2000Xl to track out drums, samples, basslines, and sequences from the 2000XL into Ableton Live? Yes you can do the same method, but no you don't need 8 outputs you can just utilize the 2 outputs and solo/record each track. No problem and thank you haha!

I use to mix dow every track and then send the audio files to ableton, but i want to try a diferent aproach with a midi output from the sound card connected to the mpc, so it will start at the same time. I have done that on the 500, but i suppose is even easier on the 1000.

Thanks! Basically means you start the clock on the MPC or DAW and the other machine runs with it

I have the Scarlett 2i4 will that work ? And what mpc would you recommend for someone who samples heavily ?

Yep. Probably the newer ones cause the old ones are pretty slow in comparison

Yeah you can sample anything with a sound card

As a midi controller you only need to use a midi cable!

Wait doesn’t the 1000 mix down to wav files? You’re going to get a lot better quality doing that than using the 1/4” outputs. Using the 1/4” outputs introduces two generations of needless conversion (D/A out of mpc and A/D to soundcard). Idk if this matters to everyone but the sound is definitely noticeable to experienced ears

On my 1000, I turn on count in, but leave off the click other than that. Record the 4 metronome clicks, line them up for each track. Delete them, everything’s in sync

Just remember, to keep the MPC groove and feel you have to turn off the Warp button after.

Still sucks! was hoping for a solution for live recording each pad into the DAW. I would rather use the assignable outs and put the Bass and melodys on one of the four pads of the assignables. Recording like this destroys the fun you cant make any changes no more or play the Beat live into Ableton and have each pad on seperate tracks for mixing. I dont like the MPC live and One but hope for the next Akai product to be something i prefer over the 1000.

@@Nomadikh Kind of a random question, but when you record your 1000 into Ableton, do you have the volume on the 1000 on max and adjust the gain on the audio interface so it's below the red? I have my volume halfway on the 1000 and adjust the gain on the interface. I wonder what's the better way, maybe it doesn't matter lol.

YO LOL theres a better way to do this that keeps everything in time. Not everyone starts beats on the 1. If you enable the metronome to play right before playback, all you have to do is record the MPC's metronome output everytime you record a track, and then just line up the metronome clicks.

also alternatively you can rout the mixer to output three stereo tracks (12, 34,ST) essentially and have your separate tracks recorded at the same time through the soundcard. (depending on hhow many inputs you have ) cheers
